Tour Down Under Discussion

The first of the classic continental tour races, mostly flat, with 1 kind of hilly stage, giving us a variety of possible results, Sprinters, Puncheurs and breakaway riders all have a shot of walking away with the overall title.

The 5 sprint stages will probably be vital to the direction the overall takes, and we have an excellent line up here. Cavendish, Ciolek and Marinangeli lead the overseas challenge, with help from two podium finishers from last year, Impey and defending champ Arashiro.

However the Aussies won't be giving up without a fight, and 2 time Down Under classic winner, Davis leads their defence, Docker and Cooke also will expect to be up there.

The hilly stage is pretty impossible to predict, with so many riders looking to attack, and the long flat run in. Ben Nasser has to be the favourite, however there are plenty of other hilly riders here, a comprehensive list is: Lloyd, Rabon, Gil Visconti Mori, Proni and Gerrans.

All of that said I reckon there will be a sprinter who hangs tough and gets the overall victory, so I'm naming one of: Davis, Impey, Gasparotto and Marinangeli as the winner, enjoy.

Ah, first race with ambitions. This will be nice. Wink

Hoping for a couple of top 3 sprints by Marinangeli, and a top 5 in the GC. I'm afraid he isn't fast enough to beat riders like Davis, Impey and Docker in the uphill finishes though. With the help from Viganò and Sagan we might manage to build a train. Smile

Made a pretty good Sprint Train in the Down Under Classic, and I'm hoping that we do the same here as a couple of theses finishes really suit Davis.

Ideally I'd like a couple of wins and a decent GC placing, but as long as I get better results in the sprints than last year I'll be happy because it should be a good guide for the rest of the season for me.

Hmm... I sense Proximus will win... 8 stages in this race...

Some very interesting stage profiles here, including the first stage. Plenty of top level sprinters here Davis, Ciolek, Cavendish so the battle for bonifications from day one will be key.

Not as many punchaers here as I expected, so stage's 3 and 5 may make it easier to break away. I like Impey's chances getting something on stage's 1 and 3 is key.

David to take 2 stages here and the points jersey I think. He has shown he is a rider to fear and in Australia should be hard to beat.

Agree with CountArach: I will again bet on Davis for most stage-wins and GC, too. Sprints will be interesting again and I hope for Cooke to catch some nice wheels (and stay with it til finish) Smile Good to see Graeme Brown's not here Wink

Davis, Docker, Impey (and Marinangeli) for the hardest sprints.
Cavendish and Ciolek will also show something on the flat ones.

First 4 also good chances for the overall as I don`t see a puncheur winning. Maybe Rabon surprises me.

I'm hoping for Croket and Gasparotto to get some Top5 in the sprints, mayber Gasparotto gains enough time on stage 5 to finish high in the GC.

I still have to fear the worst: Gasparotto being the leadout for Croket on all stages and the game recognizing Delage as team leader...

I expect a stage win here for Bianchi:
1st, 2nd and 4th stage Rabon/Ciolek?
3rd and 5th Rabon/Gil?
6th definetly for Ciolek

I guess we won't have a "Proximus Dream Tour Down Under" unfortunetly

I just hope Docker can grab consistent top 10s (or, top 5s if I'm really optimistic.) That, and I'll be pleased. That is, if the game recognises Docker as leader AND sprinter, and doesn't leave Briggs to tackle the sprint finishes...

Ouch. 3 top riders down. Especially hard for Saab`s only puncheur.

Congrats to Davis. It was a thrilling finish. Really hoped for Matthews to take it and it looked pretty well for him until he lost all his energy with 5km to go.

Gutted for Matthews... great effort

Wow, great sprint by Marinangeli. Sadly he was a little to far behind when he started the sprint, but he was faster than I had expected.

Congrats to Hollister and Davis.

BoogieBoogie
Not bad 9th place with Dekker but I think with a better placement in the final kilometers he can de better.

Wow, what a stage Smile Great effort by our young gun Matthews (his original team Festina should be proud of that, too). Ah, but close again for Oz Cycling. But we're definitely happy with Matthews and Baden Cooke's 6th as well. Hoping for the Youth-classification now and Cooke to grab a Top-5 maybe. Nice performance Smile

Just a tiny bit too much hill for Cav today, although we can also ask where the hell his leadout man was...
