Vuelta al Tachira - Stage 8
SportingNonsense
Yesterday the top GC guys sat back, and the result is Rodas storming to a big GC lead. Today is the mountain time trial, no sitting back today!

Well, I say mountain time trial, half of it is flat, before the second half rises up. Is the second part steep enough though?

We'll soon see, but its the time trial specialists first.

Ivan Kovalev and Lucas Schadlich being two of the top performers, while the best early climber to start Txurruka struggled

But hopes for Schadlich soon ended, as 76MO/73TT riders Raisin and Martinez both recovered from an 11 second loss after the flat to beat Schadlich, while California Giant duo Brandt and Peterson also performed well, Brandt taking the lead.

It was a good climb by Brandt, gaining 17 seconds on Schadlich to turn the deficit, and climbing 2 seconds better than Raisin having been 4 better on the flat. Krasnoperov climbed faster than him though, by 2 seconds - lucky for Brandt he was 3 seconds up after the flat. Unluckily for him, Niemiec has stormed into a new fastest time.

So fast was Niemiec, that he was even 2 seconds up on Schadlich at the first checkpoint, after only the flat roads.
Sergio Paulinho rides to 4th place, but Jaramillo, Carrara and Vasquez all struggle

A good ride from Ryan Eastman puts him marginally slower than teammate Brandt in 3rd, but Manuel Lloret will be dissapointed to have only gone 8th

Dissapointment also for Mikel Astarloza, who loses 49 seconds, while Carlos Castano goes 2nd. He couldnt threaten Niemiec much though!

The last man left who could beat Niemiec is Vadim Ratiy. He is faster than Castano, but not fast enough!

i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/tachiras8-12.jpg

1i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/ferrari.pngNiemiec25'17

This leaves our final 2 riders! Jose Alarcon and surprise race leader Julian Rodas. Both lose half a minute on Niemiec on the flat section, Rodas edging Alarcon, but while Alarcon is ultimately able to gain 10 seconds on Rodas, he still loses time to Niemiec all the way to the line. Niemiec takes the stage, 20th for Alarcon, 28th for Rodas.

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.pngRodas+30+57

And the good news for Niemiec, is that the finalised times seem to mostly give him an extra second! Looking at GC, Alarcon's gap to Ratiy has fallen to 34 seconds, with Castano also regaining ground. Lloret jumps Astarloza to take 5th.

With no points earnt today for Alarcon, Santos keeps the points jersey - possibly for the last time. And Emu gain 16 seconds on WWE in the teams classification, which WWE still lead - both benefiting greatly from the previous stage in that competition - a costly stage for California Giant, who would otherwise be leading the teams, and were the top team today.
