October 1st, 2010 SIGNING BONANZA AS NIKE-COOPERS MAKE THEIR MARK
After a very quiet September, newly minted Australian cycling team Nike-Coopers has announced a flurry of star signings, including Samuel Sanchez, Nicholas Roche, Rein Taaramae, Stuart O’Grady and Richie Porte.
The team’s 16 signings have shocked the cycling world as many European stars head south to Australia. The team surprised many when they announced the signings of young Irishman Nicholas Roche and Aussie Mark Renshaw, who looked almost certain to stick with HTC – Highroad to protect star sprinter Mark Cavendish.
“We really wanted to make a splash this season with our signings and I along with the rest of the team are extremely happy with the outcome of our signings so far” team boss KBB said yesterday. “We look to make a few more to finish off the transfer season”

October 11th, 2010 FOUR MORE STAR SIGNINGS AS NIKE-COOPERS LOOK TO DOMINATE
Just when everybody thought Nike-Coopers were done with their star scalping, four more star riders have been announced for the Australian outfit, none bigger than recent road World Champion Thor Hushovd.
Team manager KBB announced today not just the signing of “The God of Thunder” as Hushovd is coined due to his first name, but the signings of Tour De France stage winner Simon Gerrans, Swedish Champion Thomas Lofkvist and Italian Rinaldo Nocentini.
Hushovd only recently left Australia with his world champion’s jersey but will soon return to Australia to ride for the new team out of Melbourne.
Also, French pair Paul Garde and Raphael Devaux, both 18, have flown to Italy for a training camp after being signed by Nike-Coopers.

hmmm.... wondering if you have enough workers, Hushovd, Sanchez, Gerrans, Lokvist, Roche, Nocentini and Taaramae all in a team of only 20 riders....? I think the Meyer brothers woulda looked good in their along with maybe Howard as well, but i also think it'll be an interesting enough season to follow...  maybe if u included a few guys from RSA i woulda liked your team a whole lot more! |

I accidently simmed the AUS championships and the first three stages of the Tour Down Under. These are the results so far.

After these three stages, our team is nowhere to be seen! We'll have to lift our game if we are to have any chance in any of the jerseys. Our best placed rider in any jersey race is Richie Porte for the GC, who is 46 seconds behind in 15th place. The team is 7th in the team rankings, 2'23" behind FDJ.
The next stages will be crucial for the team.

Tour Down under - Stage 4 - Norwood - Goolwa - 125.4kms
This stage has a moderately flat route with only one mountain. The team looks pretty out of it on most jersey competitions but the aim now has to be for best team.
The stage was very uneventful for most of the race, with several failed breakaways. With 15 kms to go, Nike - Coopers were getting their sprint train ready when a huge crash knocked out about 25 riders, ruining just about every train and knocking out Lloyd, Matthews and Renshaw for Nike-Coopers. This left just O'Grady, Porte, Bobridge and Samoilau for the team at the head of the course. Pettachi was in perfect position with Haussler and Bennati trailing. When it looked just like another dissapointing stage for Nike - Coopers, Stuart O'Grady showed why he is a champion, coming from 14th place to sprint past Cavendish, Swift and Gasparotto to take third place on the line ahead of Haussler and behind Pettachi and Bennatti.
Due to most of the team finishing in the peloton, Team Nike - Coopers is now the top team in the race.

Tour Down Under - Stage 5 - Snapper Point - Willunga - 131.0kms
With a couple of fairly steep climbs. this stage could be a make or break for Richie Porte and a possible top 5 or higher finish in his home tour.
The race started quickly with an early breakaway by 6 riders. They built up a 5'22" gap on the peloton. None of them were even in the top 50 though so they were no threat to the team.
The peloton was increasing its speed and the gap was shortening and shortening. It got down to 3:49 and then stood still for a few kms. At the second sprint J. Guarnieri pipped J. Aramendia on the line to take the points.
The lead kept dwindling until it got down to 1:05 when the peloton reached the first climb. The breakaway pushed hard not to lose time and did aadmirably, only losing 2 seconds. M. Montaguti won the points on the climb.
The breakaway survived both attacks on each mountain by several riders including Richie Porte. This looked like a mass sprint was getting ready.
With 15kms to go, The breakaway started to fall apart. Most riders had fallen back and the sprint finish was on. Micheal Matthews was at the back of the peloton and couldn't sprint. Our second option was the champ Stui O'Grady. He was following Richie Porte perfectly in the train and set off with 800 metres to go. It was a two horse race between O'Grady and Pettachi. O'Grady looked like he had it but was passed by the italian in the last 100 metres.
A valiant effort by O'Grady and he will have to live with the second place.

Tour Down Under - Stage 6 - Adelaide - Adelaide - 93.2kms
This is the final stage of this tour. The GC is a very tight race but i dont think Richie Porte has it in him to get back those 46 seconds on Adelaide's answer to the Champs D'Elysees. Offredo should hold on but De Gendt could probably snare the victory. This is definently a sprinter's stage and our aim for this stage is to get a win for either M. Matthews or S. O'Grady.
Right off the bat, a group of four riders kept trying to make a breakaway. J. Sagan, S. Houanard, D. Vigano and M. Wyss finally got out to about 0'45" ahead of the peloton.
They battled with each other for about 10kms before it all fell apart and Nike - Coopers took control of the peloton.
At the first sprint, it looked like the relay at the front of the pack would take the points but right on the line, Mark Cavendish came out of nowhere to steal them from the team.
A small breakaway formed between A. Klier and S. Ivanov that got up to a minute on the pack but it came to nothing as Riche Porte, Jack Bobridge and Matthew Lloyd hunted them down.
At the next intermediate sprint, A. Petacchi basically sealed up his sprinter's jersey with the points ahead of G. Brown and M. Cavendish, who has had a quiet tour.
With 24kms to go, Lampre took hold of the peloton, forcing Nike back to make their train. The train took shape with 10 kms to go. Porte, then Samoilau, then O'Grady, then Renshaw and finally Michael Matthews. Matthews was in good position with 1.2kms to go and set off. He may have gone slightly early though because on the line he faded away and Pettachi took his fourth win of the tour and his third straight.
Although the team has had struggled with some individual performances (except from S. O'Grady), the team overall has done very well and has won the overall team rankings! This is the teams first ever victory of any sort!

After a slighly dissapointing Tour Down Under, the team arrived in the small comune Melito di Napoli in Italy for the start of the Giro Della Calabria. The Giro Della Calabria is a three stage race that goes through the foot of Italy. The team will look to get a general classification victory.
A strong group of 6 riders were sent over. The group will be led by Irishman Nicholas Roche. As you can see there are no sprinters so the goal is solely to get a GC win.
Favourites: L. Bertagnolli, T. Voeckler, E. Sella
Giro Della Calabria - Stage 1 - Melito - Catanzaro - 162.2kms
This first stage is pancake flat for the first 160kms but a steep climb in the last km or two should give one of our riders a chance for a stage win. We will aim to get a rider in the breakaway to increase our chances of a stage win.
In the first kilometre, Gerrans atacked to try to create a breakaway, following team orders.
Gerrans took the first sprint points of the day in his lone breakaway. The lead was stretching and he was now 1'20" ahead of the peloton.
The pack wanted nothing to do with the break and Gerrans kept lifting his pace and growing his lead, now out to 2'37".
His fast pace was forcing him to lose energy and he was starting to fade. He won the second intermediate sprint and was holding on...for now.
Still with 116kms to go, and nothing left in the tank for Gerrans, it looked like the pack would catch up soon. A strong headwind also started to blow against Gerrans and he looked like a goner as the lead kept dwindling away.
Although the lead was practically gone, Gerrans still held on for his third sprint victory of the day and then started to fade back into the peloton. A great effort to get three intermediate sprint victories. Just as Simon Gerrans fell back, A. Piechele and S. Janiszewski attacked aggresively. They quickly built a one minute lead over the pack.
After building a lead of over 2'00" two more riders, W. Dugan and R. Chtioui attacked and joined the breakaway. Piechele won the intermediate sprint.
With 74.5kms to go the lead had stretched out to about 3'15". When the lead had stretched out to 5'23", Nike-Coopers took action and took control of the peloton, significantly increasing the pace.
The lead kept getting smaller and at 34 kms left, ust as we had caught up with the breakaway, A.Piechele set off and won the next sprint. The breakaway then dissapaeared back into the pack. Team Nike-Coopers gave up their stronghold on the pack and started to get ready for the climb.
With 6.7kms to go Tommy Voeckler attacked and was going for the win. Thomas Lofkvist followed him up the climb. They both battle it out before Roche, Lloyd and DI Luca attack, Roche falls back along with Lofkvist and Di Luca takes the win ahead of Voeckler and Kern.
Atleast we're leading the team rankings again.

Giro Della Calabria - Stage 2 - Soverato - Vibo Valentia - 183.2kms
This second stage is quite hilly and should be a lot tougher than most of the previous stages this season.
Favourites: Lofkvist, Gerrans, Voeckler
Good to see some of our names there in the favourites column. Lets see if they can capitalize.
Simon Gerrans was proudly wearing his green jersey, despite being second in the points ranking. He was wearing the shirt because points leader D. Di Luca is also the overall leader.
AN 8 man breakaway including leader D. Di Luca went unnoticed by the peloton, and grew to a 1'43" lead. The peloton had split apart on the first climb but by the end of the descent, Nike-Coopers had caught up with the breakaway.
The first sprint was won by Thomas Lofkvist.
As the peloton struggled on the climbs, a small group of 5, including Lofkvist, Nocentini and Di Luca gained time on the peloton, leading by over a minute.
The break started to fall apart as Nocentini and Lofkvist lifted the pace. Nocentini won the mountain sprint.
Rinaldo Nocentini used his great descending skills to bridge a gap on the other riders in the breakaway. Nocentini and Lofkvist were leading the pack by 2'19" and the lead kept growing. But with 136.2kms to go, we weren't getting too excited.
The peloton had now fallen apart completely with 13 different groups behind the leaders Nocentini and Lofkvist. The closest group was 6'34" behind.
Nocentini's sublime downhilling skills were again on show as he built a 30" lead on teammate Lofkvist. Nocentini's lead over the pursuit pack was now at about 7"30"
With 66.5kms to go Gerrans, Lloyd and Roche were all sitting comfortably in the peloton, wiating for the final climb.
Nocentini and Lofkvist were still alone with a 7'30" break on the pursuit but were running out of energy and looked like cracking very soon.
 The pack were enjoying some stunning ocean views in the small coastal town of Soverato.
With 52.7kms to go, a lone rider in Team Veranda's' Staf Scheirlinckx set off to chase down the Team Nike-Coopers pair ahead of the pack.
Scheirlibckx struggled to break away from the pack and was looking tired when Liquigas' E. Capecchi joined Staf in front.
Scheirlinckx took out third place in the intermediate sprint with a short burst attack against Capecchi
At 27.6kms to go, Nocnetini reached the start of the climb up to Vibo Valentia. This climb reaches percentages up to 11.2 percent and can be very difficult. Nocentini and Lofkist have a 6'44" lead over the pursuit and if they can beat this climb with still a few minutes in hand, one of them could be victorious.
25.4kms to go and the pack have reached the climb. Voeckler, Scheirlinckx and Di Luca are at the front and looking to catch up with Lofkvist and then Nocentini..
The two Nike-Coopers riders were doing admiraly at the front, holding their lead of 6'23" up the mountain.
1.1kms to go till the summit and either Nocentini or Lofkvist were looking good for a stage win.
Nicholas Roche's poor fitness continues to be a factor as again he looks gone after one small attack.
After reaching the summit and with less than 20kms to go, Nocentina and Swedish champion Lofkvist look to descend down to the finish line
D. Di Luca took third place on the mountain climb, meaning if the breakaway succeeds, he will probably be wearing polka dot tomorrow, not yellow.
With 6kms to go, Lofkvist has caught up with Nocentini, who look to ride eachother to the finish line for a Nike-Coopers 1-2. Their lead over Di Luca and Voeckler is at 5'32".
With 1.6kms to go, Lofkvist passed an exhasuted Rinaldo Nocentini who looks content with second place.
Lofkvist sprints to the finish line and then salutes to the crowd!
Nocentini comes in second to complete the Nike-Coopers 1-2..
Lloyd and Gerrans have caught up with Voeckler and Di Luca and could they possibly make it a Nike-Coopers 1-2-3!?!? They both start to sprint but Christophe Kern is too fast and takes the last podium spot easily. It was a dead heat between Voeckler and Di Luca for fourth place but the computer awarded it to Voeckler. Lloyd and Gerrans finish 5th and 6th respectively. Roche finishes 9th and Roberts finishes off a terrific day for the team 14 minutes behind Lofkvist.
The final rider B.Mitysiak finished of CCC Polsat finished 47'40" behind the winner.
A great win for Lofkvist and now he has the yellow jersey

Giro della Calabria - Stage 3 - Pizzo - Reggio Calabria
The team arrived in the seaport fishing town of Pizzo today for this thrid stage. 
After a terrific day yesterday, the team will be a bit battered and bruised but will look to keep hold of the yellow jersey for Thomas Lofkvist.
Favourites: Voeckler, Gerrans, Nocentini
The first attack was by Colnago - CSF's Simone Startoni in the first 10 kms. He had his time alone for about 20kms before he was joined by 3 more riders, including breakaway-happy NUTRIXXION rider Dirk Muller. The 4 man breakaway built a lead of 1'49" and looked comfortable in front.
A flurry of riders responded to the breakaway, and attemped to join the tete de la course.

They eventually all joined up and had a lead of 2'19" and rising.
Rafa Chtioui won the intermediate sprint points ahead of Evert Verbist of Veranda's.
Yesterday's heroes Thomas Lofkvist and Rinaldo Nocentini thoroughly deserve their respective yellow and polka dot jerseys for overall leader and king of the mountains
Once again Europcar and Lampre were setting the pace for the peloton. This allowed Team Nike-Coopers to conserve energy and wait for the final climb. The lead was currently 4'35" for the breakaway. The highest placed rider is Rafa Chtioui who is in 8th place 5'53" behind leader Thomas Lofkvist.
With the lead increasing to over 5 minutes, Team Nike - Coopers took action and control of the peloton.
The lead was being cut drastically and was back below 4 minutes.
The rain started to fall with 100kms to go. With 90kms to go, the breakaway surenderred to the blistering pace of Team Nike-Coopers. The peloton was back on level terms and it looks like an exciting finish awaits.
Team Landbouwkrediet then took control of the peloton and again the pace increased, leaving a few riders behind.
At 77.4kms to go, Italian Andrea Masciarelli of Acqua & Sapone had his turn in front creating a lead 0f 1'05". He kept this up for quite a while surprisingly.
Again though, the amazing Dirk Muller attacked and caught up with the Italian. They built a 2'00+ gap on the pack. Masciarelli won the points sprint ahead of Muller and A. Piechele stole 3rd spot.
With 58kms to go, Yuri Trofimov of Team Katusha tried to catch up with the escapees. He eventually caught up with the pair, half way up the main climb. Their lead was 3'45" and the outlook was positive for a breakaway victory.
The team wasn't happy with the breakaway so they again took control and looked to cut the lead back down to zero. In the last 50kms, a mixture of the blistering pace of Team Nike-Coopers and the climb, ripped the peloton apart into several groups. leader Lofkvist tried to rejoin the head group for he had fallen back in the second group.
Things were heating up as Yuri Trofimov launched an attack and was leading by 49". The gap continue to wittle away between lofkvist and the group containing most of the leaders.
The frantic descent caused three minor crashes including A. Charteau, K. Fajt and R. Marzoli.
The descent was over for most riders and the final flat 30kms of the race began. All Team Nike-Coopers riders were now in the third group from the front. These groups were:

The Team Nike-Coopers group caught up with the second group with 25kms to go. The only man in front was the lone Yuri Trofimov. The team had a nice reay going at the front and the rest of the riders were struggling to keep up.
Trofomov was fighting but the lead kept getting lower, and was down to 30". 9kms to go. This will be tight.
With 2kms to go, Trofimov was caught and the race was on for the finish.
Ulissi was off first and had a good lead but then Di Luca set off with a very fast pace. Voeckler followed and Nocentini put in an amazing effort but Di Luca took the win.
A great tour, all set up by a terrific second day by Thomas Lofkvist and Rinaldo Nocentini. The team did very well to earn its first win of the season.
