The Alps are reached with a fairly straight forward run through the ruggedly beautiful Drôme region to Gap. The overall contenders will be happy to save themselves for three much-tougher days to come, which all but guarantees a break going early and staying clear all the way to the finish. The road rises steadily all the way until the main difficulty of the day, the 2nd-category Col de Manse. At almost 10km, this climb is long enough to split the lead group. The drop from it into the finish takes in the Rochette descent where Joseba Beloki memorably came to grief in 2003.

This is the same way into Gap as in 2003 if I am not mistaken? So who's gonna go over the field this time?

Beloki's fall was in the Côte de la Rochette, so unless the Col de Manse and the Côte de la Rochette are connected it isn't the way into Gap they used in 2003. Last year's stage to Gap did use that way, though.

seriously Fränks bike handling is far.... far far away from Armstrongs bike handling, dont think he could do what Armstrong did. Much more likely he is doing the Beloki.
i compared the maps, it looks like the same descent but different ascent. At least they drive through la rochette tomorrow. |

Yeh, according to a TDF guide I have, the drop to the finish takes in the Rochette descent

Chavanel ? He's attacked too much, and is nowhere near his Nationals' form (most likely due to his falls). I can't see him standing a chance tomorrow, many riders he'd be likely to escape with would be stronger than him.
I don't know if Casar will have the legs to try again, or Moncoutié (but the final descent rules him out anyway). I definitely see somebody surviving the first serious break of the day and winning the stage. A baroudeur with strong climbing skills and more than decent downhilling skills. There are a dozen left in the peloton, make your choices... |

Is the descent close enough to the finish where Voeckler could attempt to win 10-15 seconds from the rest of the favorites? I don't think anyone other than S. Sanchez is much of a descender. |

Cunego could be "the dark horse" for tomorrows stage. Probably nobody will expect an attack from him, so he could regain some time in GC and most importantly - win the stage. |

I agree. I think putting the downhill before the finish opens an opportuniy for a good DH rider to win, but I don't know if its the best thing to do thinking about the safety of the riders. If S.S attacks for example the other GC contenders will try to follow and we all know what has happened down this downhill before.

By that logic nobody should ever again place a descent before the end of a stage... (that actually doesn't sound that bad )
Anyway I think people give too much importance to descents. They rarely decide races, and the so called specialists make use of their skills very uncommonly. Even though the stage doesn't have a top finish, I think it's very likely that the first at the top of the Col de Manse will be the first at the finish line.

have to agree with pbenoit4 here, for me this stage screams Voeckler, but since hes handicapped by yellow i'm thinking LL Sanchez or Duque. Then again Roy must be due to get in a breakaway he wasnt in one yesterday lol |
