Gilbert said something like he is trying to keep up in the mountains after VDB is out of the tour and try to get a good GC result... i never saw him anywhere near the front in the hard mountain stages
apparently Lucien Van Impe thinks he has a chance:

Do you think he has any chance??? |

The real question is you have to define "good GC" result. If thats 50th place, than yes he has a shot at a "good" GC result

Yes. He could crack a top 50 or so.

Actually David Harmon and Sean Kelly (?) discussed this very topic today.
Kelly had a lot to say - short version No.
Probably not top 50 this year. He's been 'on form' for far too long this year and will break in the mountains.
However, he did say that Gilbert was most definitely a future GC contender. |

I've seen worst miracles, so it wouldn't be such a surprise to see a rider like Gilbert progress as far as needed to get a good GC result.
But I'm still naively believing that Gilbert isn't that kind of rider.
Top-20 or so would reflect his GC potential abilities, but is that what is called a good result when you're arguably the best rider of the season ? |

he's too heavy to climb up mountains. although i love to see him riding. i think he will be out of the top 20 after the pyrenees

Gilbert is bloody handy but is not targeting the GC
