Giro d'Italia 2011 - longer, steeper, harder
CrazyCruser
I've been reading stories for quite a while and I was thinking to write one on my own. I'm thinking of a career story, but first I want to test my stamina, so I decided to write a short story about the Giro d'Italia 2011.

Patch: 1.0.4.1
DB: PCM.daily 2011 (full) with some changes (I took the flags and most of the shirts from the A.S.O. DB 2011)
Difficulty: Hard

Any prize if we guess the team?

I say... Liquigas!!!

Montolivo
What about Lampre? They have one of the best sprinters in Petacchi. Scarponi and Cunego can both take multiple stage wins and Scarponi could fight for a victory or at least a podium in the GC. And there is some very interesting talents in the team with Ulissi, Ballonni etc.

Overall favourites:

img689.imageshack.us/img689/7049/nibali.jpg
After winning the Vuelta last year, Vincenzo Nibali is the biggest favourite for this Giro.
Best: 3rd (2010)
Last: 3rd (2010)
Prediction 2011: Winner.

img804.imageshack.us/img804/5139/ivanbasso.jpg
Ivan Basso is the defending champion. Since he said that he will focus on the Tour de France this year, he will probably pay back Nibali for helping him to win last year.
Best: Winner (2006 & 2010).
Last: Winner (2010)
Prediction 2011: 8th

img545.imageshack.us/img545/1388/joaquimrodriguez.jpg
Since there is only one flat ITT but lots of hard mountain stages, Joaquim Rodriguez is a real threat for the overall win.
Best:17th (2008)
Last: 17th (2008)
Prediction 2011: 3rd

img690.imageshack.us/img690/4820/igoranton.jpg
After a horrible crash, he had to give up in the red leader jersey of last years Vuelta, but now Igor Antón is back. Will we see another fight with Nibali?

Prediction 2011: 2nd

img13.imageshack.us/img13/92/frnkschleck.jpg
Fränk Schleck will lead Leopard Trek in it's inaugural Grand Tour. After three 5th places, he finally wants to get a podium.
Best: 42nd (2005)
Last: 42nd (2005)
Prediction 2011: 4th

img705.imageshack.us/img705/1425/cadelevans.jpg
The two-time TdF-runner up finally wants a big win. But this one might be too hard for Cadel Evans.
Best: 5th (2010)
Last: 5th (2010)
Prediction 2011: 7th

img11.imageshack.us/img11/4509/bradleywigginsb.jpg
In his early career, Bradley Wiggins was a track and time trial specialist. However he developed into a good stage racer over the years. But if this one is too hard for Cadel, it's too hard for Bradley for sure.
Best: 40th (2010)
Last: 40th (2010)
Prediction 2011: 10th

img706.imageshack.us/img706/3899/michelescarponi.jpg
Michele Scarponi is a hard worker. But with this big names on the list, he might be too limited to win this one.
Best: 4th (2010)
Last: 4th (2010)
Prediction 2011: 6th

img97.imageshack.us/img97/2108/robertgesink.jpg
Robert Gesink has the legs to compete for the win, but does he has the experience? I'd say no.

Prediction 2011: 5th

img845.imageshack.us/img845/254/alexandrevinokourov.jpg
Alexander Vinokourov, I guess there is nothing more to say about him...
Best: 6th (2010)
Last: 6th (2010)
Prediction 2011: 9th

Stage 1, Venaria Reale – Torino (21 km/TTT)
img717.imageshack.us/img717/6089/giro0101.jpg
The first stage of this year is a relatively short team time trial in Italy’s ancient capital Torino. Since it is so short, we don’t expect big time gaps and hope for a interesting first week. The big favourites for the stage win are HTC and Sky.

img12.imageshack.us/img12/9404/giro0102.jpg
After Lampre set a first time with exactly 29‘00, it was not a surprise that HTC – Highroad took the lead. At the intermediate time, they led by 10“ and extended their lead to 31“ at the finish line. The new best is 28‘29. In the meantime RadioShack (+8“) and Liquigas (+0“) passed the intermediate time. Surprisingly Katusha gained 13“ on the second half and finished provisinal 2nd with +12“.

img96.imageshack.us/img96/7320/giro0103.jpg
Liquigas with Nibali and Basso might has overpowered in the beginning. From the intermediate to the finish they lost 1‘16 to HTC. RadioShack just lost 1“ and finished 2nd so far with +9“.

img542.imageshack.us/img542/8357/giro0104.jpg
Team Sky, the other big favourite, passed the intermediate with +8“. However Katusha showed that HTC is not unbeatable, this might become an exciting finish. On the other side Rabobank lost 9“ at the intermediate. Sky could hold their pace and converted +8“ to -7“. So they were 19“ faster than HTC between the intermediate and the finish. The new best is 28‘22. Is this the already the winner of this stage?

img29.imageshack.us/img29/6559/giro0106.jpg
Here we have a pic from the new Leopard Trek team in its inaugural Giro d’Italia. They had a slow start with +24“ to HTC at the intermediate, but they improved and only lost 4“ to them from the intermediate to the finish. Garmin – Cervélo’s race was the other way around. They had a good start with only 2“ to Sky until the intermediate but then they didn’t have a lot of power left and lost 40“. Before that happenend, Rabobank finished provisional 3rd with +11“.

img813.imageshack.us/img813/6947/giro0107.jpg
While BMC had a bad second half and lost 1’00, a very strong Gustav Larsson led a weak Team Saxo Bank to provisional 10th with +48“. And last but not least, Astana showed a good time trial and only lost 13“ to Sky. This means that Bradley Wiggins is the first leader of this Giro and Rigoberto Uran the best U25-rider.

For all who are guessing which team I play, you should find it out during the first week.

nielsinho1997
I think Leopard or Rabobank
I have bad english

roturn
Just by looking through the startlist I guess you are Astana or Androni, but probably I am wrong. Wink
No team lost that much time actually.

ricotero_uy
I stay with Liquigas... it's never easy to make a perfect TTT.

Alakagom
I think it is Liquigas too. Just according to the TTT as well.

Stage 2, Alba – Parma (239 km)
img135.imageshack.us/img135/6647/giro0201.jpg
Today is first normal stage of this Giro. The start is in Alba and the finish in Parma. With 239 km, the stage is quite long, but still there are two longer stages in the third week of this Giro. With only three smaller hills (1 KoM sprint), the last one 31 km from Parma, we should get a mass sprint today. And with Mark Cavendish, Alessandro Petacchi, André Greipel, Óscar Freire, Allan Davis, Daniele Bennati, Robbie McEwen and Daniele Napolitano are some of the best sprinters of the world in this peloton.

img7.imageshack.us/img7/5051/giro0202.jpg
The start was calm and the peloton stayed together for more then 20 km. Quite unusual for a peloton full of energy. Who will be he first attacker of this Giro?

img21.imageshack.us/img21/1576/giro0203.jpg
On the first hill it was Emanuele Vona from Farnese Vini who attacked. He easily got away from the peloton. A few kilometers later, Baden Cooke initiated the chase. He got got away with 10 companions and closed the gap to Vona. The group was now 12 riders big, here is the list of the names: Vona (FAR), Cooke (SBS), Pineau, (QST), Fischer (GRM), Marcato (VCD), Isasi (EUS), Minard (ALM), Bertolini (AND), Van Emden (RAB), Proni (ASA), Kessiakoff and Gasparotto (AST).

img33.imageshack.us/img33/6066/giro0204.jpg
In the peloton it was Sky who controlled the pace, here with the German champion Christian Knees. The gap was never bigger than 9 minutes, but no other team wanted to help Wiggins‘ team. In the KoM-rated hill, Kessiakoff raised the pace for his teammate Gasparotto, who won the sprint in front of Marcato and Pineau. This acceleration was too much for Isasi, Proni and Van Emden.

img97.imageshack.us/img97/4613/giro0205.jpg
With 5 km left, after a strong effort from Basso, the peloton caught the rest of the group. Since the pace was very high on the last kilometers, most of the lead out-men struggled and the sprinters had to change their tactics. Mark Cavendish tried to win this stage from the first position, but probably he accelerated to early. With Petacchi, Napolitano, Greipel and McEwen right as his wheel, he was in a bad position. Then Petacchi set a deadly acceleration, which no-one could follow and won his 22nd Giro stage easily in front of Napolitano and Greipel. Since neither Cavendish nor Freire or McEwen won, Wiggins could defend the maglia rosa, as well as Uran the white jersey. Bad news for Ivan Basso, he paid for his effort and lost almost 3 minutes as well as Chris Anker Sørensen.

Stage 3, Reggio Emilia – Rapallo (173 km)
img28.imageshack.us/img28/8139/giro0301.jpg
Today we have the first longer climb of this Giro. The Passo del Bocco is neither very steep nor long. However it is almost only going up from the start to the summit of Passo del Bocco. After that there are two smaller hills on the last 15 km, which is trouble for the sprinters. Probably there won’t be a classic mass sprint. It’s more likely that a puncheur like Damiano Cunego or Alexandre Vinokourov might win today.

img193.imageshack.us/img193/4714/giro0302.jpg
The first 30 km were very intense, Sky controlled the field and chased down every single breakaway. After about 30 km, they probably were sick of chasing, so they finally let some riders go.After calming down, some more riders broke out and after about 50 km we had this group, 14 riders strong: Bandiera (QST), Chiarini (AND), Cooke (SBS/again), Hinault (ALM), Corioni (ASA), Minard (ALM/again), Van Emden (RAB/again), Rosseler (RSH), Lancaster (GRM), Izagirre (EUS), Belletti (COL), Kessiakoff (AST/again), Mazzanti (FAR) and Anza (VCD).

img197.imageshack.us/img197/5127/giro0303.jpg
In the peloton it was business as usual. Sky was making the pace, and the rest of the teams felt confident with that. They never gave more than 6 minutes to the group and increased the pace in the climb to the Passo del Bocco. The peloton passed the summit about one minute after the front group.

img18.imageshack.us/img18/1020/giro0304.jpg
Most of the riders in the front group were already strugggling in the climb and didn’t take any risk in descent. But obviously this was too slow for Baden Cooke, so he decided to attack and hoped to win this stage solo. But the peloton was coming nearer and nearer…

img855.imageshack.us/img855/3765/giro0305.jpg
All of a sudden the cam was behind the peloton. What is going on here? Vinokourov got lost. But the replay shows that he had to change the bike. Probably there are better moments for that. However he managed to get back in the peloton.

img843.imageshack.us/img843/9946/giro0306.jpg
With about 10 km to go, the peloton, led by Lampre, caught Cooke. Still no-one wanted to attack and Petacchi is still there, as you can see, probably Freire too, but Greipel and Cavendish not anymore I guess.

img687.imageshack.us/img687/4784/giro0307.jpg
In the last descent Óscar Freire took the lead, with Fränk Schleck at his wheel and somehow he managed to oversprint the Spaniard. Rojas sprinted to 2nd place. Despite that there were some sprinters with some power left we have a surprise winner in Rapallo. And of course Wiggins and Uran came in with the peloton and defended their jerseys. Alessandro Petacchi finished 4th and defended the points jersey.
