The 2011 Giro d'Italia will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, with a mountainous route that looks set to exalt a possible duel between Vincenzo Nibali and Alberto Contador.
Race director Angelo Zomegnan revealed the route in Turin, where the three weeks of racing will begin on Saturday, May 7 with a 21.5km team time trial.
The corsa rosa concludes with a 32.8km individual time trial that finishes in the shadow of the spectacular Milan Duomo on Sunday, May 29.
In between, the 3496km route heads south to Sicily for a mountain finish on the slopes of the Etna volcano and then returns north along the Adriatic coast before a long series of testing stages in the Dolomites and a grand finale on the dirt road climb of the Colle delle Finestre near Sestriere.

If he were here this is the sort of place I'd expect Cunego to be going for the stage win, but without him then maybe someone in his vein - a climber who is alright on other types of terrain.
Visconti did alright in the Eroica earlier this year - could he do something similar? Thoughts anyone?

Monday and tuesday stages may be the most interesting ones, since there won't end with a climb. So maybe Contador will not be that dominating, and Nibali could try something. |

Todays stage will be one of the toughest so far. Just think about the duel between Anton and Nibali! |

Well, the Giro will be won in the hotel, after all.

Yes, I was going to post something similar to that but thought I'd leave it open for someone. |

If the break stays, my bet would be Sella. And I think you should've bold Tschopp too, he's in a decent place in the GC. |

That's a nice breakaway to have some tactical moves later. |

The break has 9:30 on the peleton now. Which also means we have new virtual leader - Mikel Nieve who was only 9:03 to Contador.

I think Saxo Bank will be heavily put to the test. My bet for today is Anton.

except for the fact that contador is as good a time trialist as a climber so it's not like nibali can just ride off the front without him.
the only way contador will be beaten is if he crashes out of the giro, and technically thats not beating him. |
