2012 Giro - useless rest day

I'm in the 2012 Giro and it seems like a pretty easy year, not to many big climbs. One thing I think is a bit weird, though. The first rest day comes after 3 stages. It starts with and 8km prologue, the seconds stage is 200km and 100% flat, same with the third stage. I hardly see the point of having a rest day here.

Rest day was after three days in 2010. Transfer from Netherlands to Italy. Maybe a similar circumstance?

The rest days stay the same for every year. They can't be changed with variants.
