I just started playing around with the stageeditor and pretty quick ran into the problem of missing DEM-data for the routes i had created. After searching the web high and low i came over this site:
https://geoengine....t_roam.cgi
From what i understand you can download .dem-files for any area you specify by selecting the coord in long/lat for teh centre of your desired dem-region and the download as .dem at the bottom of the page. I haven't tried it yet as im still at work, but if anyone has any experience with it, i'd love to hear it.
As for naming the dem file i guess you'd have to name it NxxEyy where xx and yy are the long/lat for the map. Note that the editor doesnt use SxxWxx, but negative values for xx & yy to represent areas S and W.

I also found a site that offers free DTED-data level 0, and there's supposedly free software that should be able to convert DTED to DEM. Blue Marble Desktop apparently does this, but i dont know if you can use it for free/trial and again i havent had the chance to test it yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's possible to make these files, but I know that the French community has tried for a long time and has still yet to succeed.
If it was as easy as downloading a couple of files, I'm pretty sure that Cyanide would have released the entire world a while ago, but since that's not the case, there must be more to it than just finding the DEM files. |

I assumed it wasnt as easy as just downloading from the site, but i've also come across some viewing tools for .dem-files so i can check what the cyanide ones contain and perhaps what parameters need to be fixed for these to work. It's worth a shot at least.

You can try and hopefully with success. But I was also working on it several days and never got a result. |

What i've learned so far: Yes, the site gives you nice valid .dem-files of any region you specify, but no they dont work in the Stage Editor. This is because the .dem files in the editor arent standard .dem-files. At least the viewer could not make any sense of it. That leaves the questions... what format is the data really in?

I would suggest a PM to someone at Cyanide. They may respond to you, they may not. It's worth a shot. |

Well, i gave it a shot anyway. Sent a pm
Don't understand why they want to be so "anal" about this though. Isn't it in their own best interrest to let ppl make their own stages? It just encourages ppl to use their software, which is what they want in the first place....

This is Cyanide. Doing things the sensible way never seems to occur to them

What do you want them to do? If they could make the .dem files fully compatible with the ones that already exist, I'm sure they would. It's not like they are doing a lot to prevent us from editing the game...
The reality is probably that they needed to do some extra work in order to make the .dem files work properly with PCM. |

I actually got another reply from Eyolfur. He checked with some other dev and there's no encryption, and he still thinks there some form of compression on it. He mentioned gzip or lzma. I've tried opening the files with a few different decompression tools without success. Does anyone have any experience with this?
He's gonna check the source code for the stage-editor and get back to me with the details, but not untill june when they're done with pcm2011 so there's actually hope we can add our own regions at some point
