Attacking downhill
Munique
What are your experiences with exploiting a relatively high downhill skill? I'm going to ride the Giro and TdF (2011) with Fuglsang as GC contender (aiming somewhat about top 10), and since I obviously will be competing against riders with much higher climbing skills, I wonder if it is possible to gain some time (maybe a stage win) on the downhills. Fuglsang has a downhill skill of 78 - his highest skill compared to e.g. 77 mountain.

If I want to exploit the few downhill finishes, when should I attack? As I see it, there are three scenarios:

1. An attack (or hard pace which creates a gab) a few kilometres from the top on the last climb.

2. An attack in the last kilometre of the climb which allows further attacking on the downhill.

3. An attack on the downhill.

I guess it is also of significance whether you attack from a peleton or just a small favourite group.

What are your experiences?

I did it with Samuel Sanchez but you gain very little time, but I only done it for a stage win and in small tours like Pais Vasco.

I won MSR with Gilbert attacking in downhill by ~40 seconds.

Your better off trying in the giro because you get bonus seconds. I doubt you will get much time unless you attack about a kilometer from the top and book it on the decent. Decending on the dot at 99 can work, but there has to minimal flat on the run in to the finish. The TdF is pointless because there is not much reward at the finish. Also with Fugslang he will probably be dead at the top because the favorites have a much better stat. If you play on easy then of course this can all work.

Try to tire the riders on the ascent and when you are close to the top, attack. I remember i managed to take Contador in TDF 1 minute with a tactic like this.

To be able to make downhill attacks, Fuglsang has to reach the top with the favorites first. Are you sure you can make this happen? And if he really can do it, he might not be able to attack because he is tired (no red bar).

I think you should gain time elsewhere. Hilly stages or flat stages with hills at the last 10 km. Either attack shortly before he reaches the top, so that he is downhilling faster. Or attack before the hill starts to get some momentum, then use the dot to ride up.

Thanks for the replies - I'm playing on hard, so it may be possible to follow the favourites on a lucky day Wink. But you might be right Lachi. I'll see how things work out.

The easiest way to gain time on the others with him is TT, as he is a better TTer than most other GC contenders (I don't get that, Peraud and Fuglsang started both as MTBers and both are good TTers, so did Rasmussen but he sucks in TT)
