Has there ever been a GC rider who could sprint?

I'm a relativly big cycling fan, but unfortunately I don't know much about the history when it comes to riders. Of course I know about the big ones (Zoetemelk, Lemond, Coppi, etc), but I was wondering if there has ever been a GC rider who could also do sorta well in a sprint? I'm not talking about a lovechild between Cavendish and Contador (the horror!), but someone who could just hold his own.
Can someone help me out here? |

There's no need to go as back as Merckx era (cycling has changed a lot), you have Valverde right there. And Gianni Bugno was very fast too. And both Sean Kelly and Jalabert won a Vuelta, but they are kinda the opposite of what you're asking for.

Hinault once won the Champs Elysèes bunch sprint.
No, he wasn't a sprinter, he was just that badass.
EDIT: also, Merckx.

Valverde isn't a good "mass sprinter" so I wouldn't say Valverde. |

Is Vino also badass?
Edit: And I know Isso always talks about Rojas, who could climb well and sprint when he was a lot youunger until he focused on sprinting (which is always the wrong choice if your Spanish).

Some guys like Cunego to name an active rider, are decently fast when it comes to small group sprints. Samuel Sanchez too.
Thing is, in road races, sprinting often has a lot to do with freshness, more than sheer explosivity, which gives some sort of an advantage to GC riders. |

I hope you never bump into Eddy Merckx. He'll probably eat you. |

Merckx? Who? Isn't that just a brand of bicycles?
Jokes aside, I didn't mentioned Merckz because he's a given! |
