So, the first day in the mountains. Alarcon already leads with around 3 minutes to most other competitors. Yes, this is going to be one thrilling fight *sarcasm*.
Favorites are Alarcon, Perez Sanchez and Lloret. Although the downhill might cause groups to get back togheter.
There is a sprint in the beginning, and the sprinters are going for it. Greipel takes it before Chavanel and Awang. Shouldn't Chavanel save him for the mountains?
After the first sprint, 4 riders attack; Andersen, Vandborg, Hernandez and Zahner.
Andersen takes the second sprint in front of Hernandez and Zahner. At that moment they still have a good lead, but probably not enough to make it over the climb.
And with attacks coming at the foot of the climb, it's very unlikely that the break will make it. Dangerous man here, Ricardo Van der Velde, the only real climber still in the same time as Alarcon.
But then Alarcon attacks as he senses the danger, he is countered by Pineau.
And Perez Sanchez, among others.
Eventually a bigger group forms from early break riders, and attackers. Perez Sanchez, Alarcon and Van der Velde power away from this group though.
Perez Sanchez comes first over the top, which will give him the polka dots. They already got a good lead of 1' at the top, and with the peleton splintered, they will sprint for the win.
In that sprint, Perez Sanchez takes the lead. Van der Velde is launching his sprint, while Alarcon is still waiting.
And surprisingly, Alarcon doesn't even come out of Perez Sanchez's wheel. Riccardo Van der Velde takes the win, and the GC lead! A competitor?
About a minute later, a group of former break riders, with some attackers come over the line. They got a 50 second gap on the main pack with all the favorites.
