The penultimate HC classic of the season, and we head to the former ProTour race Giro dell'Emilia - an Italian race well suited to the Italian puncheurs like Ricco, Ponzi, Ginanni, and Pozzato. Russians Efimkin and Kolobnev, Belgians Gilbert, Monfort and Claeys, and German Schumacher are all also contenders - in a race that could be pivotal for many teams promotion hopes.
(Note: The likes of Gilbert are not in their national champion kit, the DB in use was still the one from the Worlds)

A 10 man breakaway formed: Gallego Martin, Grippo, Pietropolli, Lundberg, Allain, Pagoto, Baez, Stetina, Decouttere and Teklehaimanot.

Onto the first of the two longer climbers of the day, Nicholas Roche leads himself and 3 other attackers across to the break - Vansummeren, Nazaret and De Maar.

They lead by 3 minutes, and Ljungblad, Bernucci and Wyss attack on the 2nd bigger climb but are caught on the flat section that follows, along with Decouttere who was dropped from the break

We close in on the 4 short, sharp, steep climbs that will decide the race. The break are in view on the first, and Ponzi attacks

Dan Martin, Ben Nasser and Pozzato try to counter but fail and at the top, UBS have chased down all of the break, and Ponzi too

Onto the next hill Flugel attacks - and Ponzi is back in the action

Kolobnev and Efimkin follow them over the top, and a gap is gained

Once the descent ends though, Ginanni immediately attacks - with Ljungblad looking at following

Then Ben Nasser, Pozzato, Proni and Nocentini - as Ljungblad fails

Nocentini looks set to be the first to bridge to the front 4, and Ponzi goes on the attack once again

Schumacher, Kirchen and Ventoso follow and over the top of this 3rd hill, a group of 13 is together in the lead - with all of the previously mentioned attackers

They build a lead of about 50 seconds, the most notable absences are promotion contenders Lego - neither Monfort nor Claeys have attacked yet. With 5km to go, Hermans makes his move - but again no Legos follow. Albasini, Gonzalo and Moletta do, but only Albasini is able to follow Hermans clear

Neither Hermans nor Albasini will get across though, and with 1.5km to go it is Ricco and Ginanni on front of the race, preparing for the uphill dash to the line

Pozzato is up there as an Italian win looks likely - Pronzi, Schumacher, Kirchen and Efimkin also challenging

Ricco is leading the way, but Pozzato - despite taking 3rd in an uphill sprint at the Worlds so recently - cant keep the pace and drops backwards

Has Ricco gone too hard just a bit too early though? Ginanni starts to close the gap

But Riccardo Ricco has enough to hold on and take the win! The Italian double with Milan Torino just a couple of days ago. 2nd for Ginanni, and in a tight finish, Schumacher claims 3rd

Then its Efimkin, Ponzi, Kirchen and Kolobnev. Gilbert only 8th, Pozzato faded to 9th, and Flugel rounding out the Top 10.

Ventoso and Nocentini are next, while Proni was gapped at the end but still takes 13th.

14th and 15th are the Lego dissapointments, and 16th is Froome - another who did not bother to attack
