Tour of Britain - stage 8

The final stage of the Tour of Britain takes us into Liverpool:

We start the day in Blackpool which still is trying to make it as UK's premier resort and wind our way down the North Western coast to the one of UK’s biggest cities in Liverpool. It is flat today and barring incident should give Cillit Bang’s Johnny Bellis a hard fought victory. The brit was hardly seen in yesterdays nightmarish stage in Scotland and he will be pleased to see calmer and drier weather today.

Odds are we will have a sprint and remember Great Britain is still waiting for a stage win to celebrate but Forero and Mohs look on fire here in this tour.

The break of the day forms early with ten men making the move Caruso (Wiggle), Stybar (Milka), Wei (Bbox), McEvoy (Youtube), Vangheel (Falcon), Roviva (Pearl), Frischkorn (Mercedes), Sicard (El Al), Talbott (Bimbo Nutella) and Sabido (Bimbo Nutella).

Ten men breakaway from a relaxed peleton

They ride through the Lancastrian countryside and towns, one of which paid for a sprint hotspot. It is inconsequential though for the record Rovivo took it from Sabido and Caruso. With 50km to go though the break only had 4 minutes on the peleton it will be shut down. Not before Youtube’s McEvoy takes the first of the two late KOM primes.

They have found two hills near the finish to place primes on, the Youtube rider has tried to put himself about in a few breaks but he has missed the right moments to score heavily. He still only has 22 KOM points and is behind the top five. The break is completely shut down after this leaving some stage contenders to go for the penultimate sprint prime.

Swift takes late prime ahead of Vantomme and Ciolek

With joint KOM leaders Barberi and Lequatre the last little ramp was interesting. The latter rider did not bother trying to get ahead of the ferocious pace set by the peleton, but Barberi gave it a go. Alas the Bimbo Nutellia man was not rewarded with any points, but Highroad’s Ghysselink managed to take the maximum which nudged him into 4th place on the KOM comp.

There is still one last sprint prime as well before the finish in this prime packed run in to Liverpool. Only a couple of sprinters are near enough to the front to go for this LEGO’s Ciolek and 100% Me’s Swift take the points for first and second.

These late sprints have altered the sprint classifications minor placings slightly the current top 10 are:
Mohs (137), Bellis (120), Forero (116), Schumacher (108), Ciolek (107), Swift (102), Rowe (97), Ponzi (85), Eisel (84) and Vantomme (83).

Thirty-five points are available to the winner of the stage and points are awarded all the way down to 25th place. However have Swift, Vantomme and Ciolek gambled everything by going for the sprints?

3300m to go, things are scrambled with a lack of the usual lengthy sprint trains. Bimbo Nutella have a dual Dokcx and Eisel train to the right of the pace snake, whilst Bellis is sitting on Manan’s wheel to the left.

In the pace snake there lurks some good roulers who could surprise, with Sijmens, Sabido, Nepo, Mertens and Downing. Also the LEGO rider to the left is Jiri Hochmann, not Ciolek. The best moving sprinters are Swift and Vantomme who are still near the front because of the sprints. As the speed ramps up between 3000m and 2000m to go Swift and Vantomme come into view.

These two are hurtling down the final straight away, the zoom past the battling roulers only Milka’s Vanderaeden can come close to living with them.

The two sprinters will be desperate to register wins, Vantomme took a stage in the Tour of Belgium, Swift took a couple of wins in Ireland. The Scousers are roaring on Swifty can they be that extra yard the Geordies were not the other day.

Its Ben Swift who takes the stage for 100% Me to give Britain a home stage victory.

Alright alright calm down Swiffy you’ve only gone an’ won a stage mate

Vantomme comes second, Vanderaeden is third, Bellis finished fourth and takes an excellent GC win with Points winner Mohs 5th.
