Tour de l'Avenir 2011 - Stage 8

Three key stages to decide the race now. Starting with the first of two summit finishes, with the time trial in between

A break goes clear, and holds a small gap prior to the top - so tempting that it leads to Ryabkin, Anguilet, Costagli, and a couple of others to try to close it. Too late though, Battaglin crosses first from Cronshaw and Shahrulnizam.

Only Battaglin from those 3 makes it stick into the break of the day though - along with Brown, Bercz, Jungels, Vermote, Kiprotich, Nygren and Navid

With just over 20km to go in the stage - and 10km of mostly flat before the kick up - we have some surprisingly early attacks by the Top 10 contenders. Eastman leads it, with Boonratanathanakorn, Wallays, Curfs and Costagli

And what's this, now Madrazo is attacking aswell. Theres still 5km more til we get to the climb, but he doesnt care!

Anguilet and Locatelli look to follow but cant, so Dowsett, Brandt and Tenzon try. But Madrazo is away, past Costagli, and past all of the break, bar Battaglin - and now onto the climb!

Madrazo rides into the lead, while Costagli is also moving away solo from the group of breakaway survivors - Eastman is in that group, but only towards the back of it having just caught on

Mat Amin attacks, then Schreurs and Copeland, then Guldhammer, and now Tenorio!

Tenorio has left it far too late though, and Madrazo is into his stride, passing under 5km to go with nobody else in sight

Costagli is next, 1'33 behind Madrazo, with another 20 seconds to Tenorio, 15 more to Eastman, and a further 30 to Schreurs, Copeland, Guldhammer and Danacik

Tenorio catches Costagli. Actually, it is more of a case of Costagli falling back to Tenorio. The gap to Madrazo for Tenorio is still close to 2 minutes - Madrazo only needs 90 seconds

Its no surprise that Costagli cant keep with Tenorio, but its a tough struggle for the Spaniard nonetheless, seeing Madrazo far away in the distance

Madrazo can celebrate from a long way out, but perhaps he should be pushing for more time. He does deserve the applause though, he seemed to go early - but really, he had to - and he is going to be very well rewarded

A minute passes, a minute 10, a minute 20, a minute 30, and finally settling on 1'39 as Tenorio crosses the line for 2nd. A net gain of 1'47 with time bonuses, but Tenorio at least managed to close down the gap a little - 15 seconds or so - in the last couple of kilometres - but Madrazo will take over the race lead by 17 seconds!

Costagli finishes in 3rd place, holding off Eastman - but 3 minutes down on Madrazo! Still, he is gaining much needed time to move into the Top 10 GC

Danacik takes 5th, exactly a minute behind Costagli, finishing with Copeland and Guldhammer. Schreurs tailed off a little in the last kilometre, but starting the day with a decent enough cushion in 3rd overall, thats a great climb by the Dutchman to limit his losses

Next is a group of 5 who rode away from the peloton. Leadign them is one of the stars of the U23 Division, Abolfazi Gilannipoor. Only the number 3 in his team here - the Iranian having to work for Americans - but he at least beats Brandt to take 9th here - as well as 2 Quiksilver Americans Hicks and Summerhill. Betancourt being the 3rd Quiksilver rider in the group.

Mercedes and Quiksilver are battling for the team classification in this race. Mercedes gain 1'39 on Quiksilver here, but still trail by 2'34

Mat Amin and another Quiksilver Mach finish at 5'47. Kahra, Ryabkin and Anguilet at 6'05, with Dowsett and Wallays in the peloton at 6'34. The Brit at least holding onto his Top 10 spot for now, although dropping from 6th to 9th. Kennaugh meanwhile lost 8 minutes - not too surprising really - and so slips down to 16th.
