Mountain stage number 1! 4 testing climbs, but then a flat run in to the finish.
Ryabkin takes the intermediate sprint, from Bucher and Rudling
A break of 12 goes away - Ryabkin, Bucher, Anguilet, Shahrulnizam, Mach, Germini, Rudling, Stamsnijder, Mathiesen, Tatarinov, Pidun and Eeckhout. Those last 5 are dropped further up the climb though
Gabon rider Charles Anguilet set the pace up most of the climb - now seemingly recovered from a Stage 1 crash that still appeared to be affecting him on Stage 4 - but pulls away right by the top to hand the full KoM points to Russian Free Agent Ryabkin. Bucher 2nd, Shahrulnizam 3rd.
Bas Stamsnijder of Philips used the descent to get back to these 7, only to be dropped again, yet drag himself back by the top of climb 2. After a telling off from his Directeur Sportif, Anguilet learns his lesson and takes the KoM this time.
2nd for Ryabkin puts him in a provisional lead at 28 points, with Bucher on 24 and Anguilet 22.
Stamsnijder dropped again on the shorter climb 3, where Anguilet takes the points again. But with Ryabkin still on his wheel in 2nd, the Russian still leads provisionally, albeit now just by 4 points
Santander have been setting the pace with the peloton as we head onto the 4th climb. 9km to the summit and here comes the action, Madrazo attacks!
But almost immediately he stops, and takes a drink
Eastman, Tieri, Danacik, Costagli, Guldhammer and Schreurs all also attack, they move up to the back wheel of Madrazo
Boonratanathanakorn and Roe also try to attack, but cant get away because Santander are setting a fierce pace. Infact, theyve caught Madrazo and the rest of the group (except Tieri who has attacked again). Strong riding by Garcia de Mateos and Landa there
And perfectly orchestrated, Tenorio now attacks! (Following a 2nd move by Eastman)
Tenorio passes Eastman and also Shahrulnizam and Rudling, who have now been dropped by the break
After moves from Copeland, Tieri and Mat Amin, Madrazo has finally regained enough energy to make his second attack.
Now its Guldhammer and race leader Summerhill
4 surviving breakaway riders cross the climb first. Anguilet 1st but with Ryabkin 2nd again, the first climber blunder will cost Anguilet, and the Russian takes the KoM jersey by 2 points
30 seconds later, Tenorio
1'10 behind the leaders, Eastman has caught a former breakaway rider Germini. Madrazo summits next, 1'40 behind the leaders - more importantly, over a minute behind Tenorio
Schreurs, Guldhammer, Danacik, Mat Amin, Summerhil and Copeland are 2'20 behind the front 4
Down the descent, Tenorio joins up with the 4 leaders, and Madrazo catches Eastman and Germini. The 3rd group has thinned down to Summerhill, Guldhammer, Mat Amin and Copeland
Determined to establish himself as top rider here, Tenorio has ridden away from the 4 day-long breakaway riders
At 10km to go he leads Eastman and Madrazo (who have dropped Germini) by 1'40!
Boonratanathanakorn has slipped away from the peloton, while Summerhill attacks away from his 3 companions and bridges the 40 second gap to Madrazo and Eastman
Danacik, Costagli, Schreurs and Eijssen now attack the peloton
But the TV cameras rightly switch to the front, final kilometre for Tenorio
Its been a brilliant ride - great teamwork by Santander to neuter his rivals, and then a powerful move by Tenorio that none could match. Great victory!
The group of 4 are next, having been on the attack all day long. American Paul Mach has the most strength left, and powers to 2nd ahead of Charles Anguilet
Theres a small gap to Ryabkin and Bucher, and then another one to Madrazo who takes the sprint for 6th - losing 1'16 on Tenorio! (1'36 including time bonuses)
Summerhill keeps up his strong race so far, but Ryan Eastman will be most pleased in this group - taking a good step towards the battle for the final podium spot.
Schreurs leads in the next 8 man group - which after late attacks now also includes Jelle Wallays and remarkably, Peter Kennaugh!
Boonratanathanakorn faded from that group and leads in the first peloton. It would be 58 but split on the descent into 32 and 26. Red Bull being a notable loser with 4 riders in this second section.
