We have yet another one of those complicated finishes for you today in the Volta as we go across to Santi Tirso. We go out the back of this town up the 7km Sra da Assucao which averages a tasty 6% and promises to be another oppurtunity for a GC rider to take time.
Most would have Franco Pellizotti as a big favourite here, but locals are looking for something from the Benfica squad specifically Jurgen Van den Broeuk. Another name quoted in the morning press is David Lopez Garcia of Santander, time is running out for him to make an impression before that last stage time trial.
Early on we had a four man move which involved an outside shout for todays finish. Intesas Mikael Delage preferring to try his luck in the breakaway with Cillit Bang sprinter Manan, a Benfica climber Terciado and Garbelli of Vespas attacking flock.
Four man breakaway today
Delage dominated the breakaway when it came to the pacing and the bonuses out on offer taking both the first two sprints and the first KOM prime taking him to 32 points and 4th in that comp behind Pellizotti (58) , Siutsou (42) and Lopez Garcia (37) but ahead of Eltink (31) and Serpa (30).
Delage takes the climb and other primes
Race leader, the curly haired one, has his troops on display today as they chase the break down. It is a long tour and there is the expectation that breakaways may have a chance but today time is potentially there for the strongmen. Pellizotti will feel he needs breathing room against Serpa before those last two stages.
With 30 to go the break had 2.43, but they had faded down to just two riders Delage and Terciado and 1.10 by the 15 to go point . It was Tachira winner Richard Ochao Quintero who was doing most of the gruntwork.
Ochao on domestique duty
At the last sprint on the bottom of the climb Delage takes yet another bonus, moving him up to 45 points but still way off Grau's 75 points.
Delage - > Terciado at last sprint
The sprinters with no chance of winning the stage have their own battle for third place. It is Santander's Oscar Guerao who takes the spoils and he will think that stages 8 and 9 offer better chances.
Guerao wins sprint for third
Up the final climb they go and it is surprising again to see the Pirelli jerseys come to the front they quickly bring back Delage and Terciado and discourage any breaks from the bottom.
Pirelli decide to pace things
An interesting one, perhaps minimising the possible impact a Pellizotti or Benfica move can have. Isidro Nozal does a lengthy turn as some riders look to manoeuvre themselves into position, Theo Eltink and Daniel Moreno move forward past the Youtube, UBS and Pirelli pacers.
2500m to go: Eltink drags Moreno forwards
Not too many GC men are that close, Siutsou in green is being tracked by Yeison Delgado and Bosisio but no sign of Serpa, Kohl or Pellizotti. In the next 800m Eltink looks around and decides to keep pushing forwards with Moreno also following. It becomes clear the favourites are following Siutsou with Delgado, Bosisio, Rohregger and Lopez Garcia paying closest order.
Eltink hits the front with 1400m to go
It feels like they have let Eltink steal a march here, but as the sprinting starts Siutsou launches himself quickly leaving Delgado (and subsequently those behind him) reeling. The Red Bull man gets onto Eltinks wheel ahead of Moreno. Also moving forward is another Benfica man Nazaret!
800m to go Eltink has Red bull and Benfica riders to battle against
We can see here that Pellizotti, Serpa and Kohl have been guilty of watching each other and are out of the stage victory hunt. Up front it is a hell of battle between Eltink and Siutsou, Eltink remember looking for a second successive stage win.
Smowz can barely contain himself - Siutsou battles Eltink
It is very tight here with the Benfica duo looking certain for 3rd and 5th ahead of Delgado. Siutsou just nudges it by a half a wheel!
Yes that feels good - Siutsou takes the win on stage 7
This nudges the Belerussian more solidly into 3rd place on GC and into the outright KOM lead. Eltink meanwhile moves into a share of the points jersey with Grau who doesn't score today.
