A very similar stage to the previous one in that it ends with a double climb, this time it is known as the Gouveia climb. The stage is made more difficult by the 17km Penhas Douradas climb about two thirds of the way through the stage.

No difference in the big favourite for todays stage though with Franco Pellizotti very much the flavour of the day here. Lopez Gracia showed yesterday that he knows he needs all the time he can get and also Vespa's Bosisio has been mentioned by someone though that must have been a mistake!

Plenty of flat roads to begin with and we had a breakaway of seven riders though two struggled to get on the back. The main five were Bochmann (Telenor), Kunistski (Intesa), J Moreno (Santander), Pancake (Cillit Bang) and Brandle (Unicredit). The stragglers were Tzortzakis (Falcon) and Claes another from the Cillit Bang flock.

Seven man break of the day

The first sprint came at the crest of a small climb, it was taken by Lasse Bochmann most famous for taking a surprise solo win the Cape Argus Cycle classic.

It is another day in charge for Unicredit, whose race got a bit complicated yesterday as Sergio Ortega their GC leader lost a bit of time. It is all in for Grau now one suspects and he may well survive today as he is a pretty decent tough rider. Tomorrow of course is a different matter!

Near the beginning of this long climb there is a sprint point taken once again by the stealer from sprinters Lasse Bochmann!

On the climb the break keeps a good tempo, the two stragglers though are dropped back to the peleton now though. It is Youtube who are coming to the front putting riders into difficulty, but the break make it to the top intact.

Behind there is a scramble for the last three points scoring positions and David Lopez Garcia shows he is game by nabbing them ahead of Siutsou and Kozenchuk.

This makes Lopez Garcia our temporary KOM leader on 18 points, though the final climb will probably decide who wears the climbers jersey tomorrow.

The pace on the climb has dropped several sprinters from the stage 2 gang including leading young rider Oscar Guerao.

With 30km to go, the gap is still three minutes but with two climbs left it looks tough for our breakaway. Bochmann stops his domination of sprints by allowing Brandle to take the third prime with Kunitski behind.

The first ascent of the Gouviea (3.5km @ 5%) drops Peter Pancake of the Cillit Bang team.

Bochmann takes the first place ahead of Brandle and Kunitski but this is not enough to move him into the KOM lead. Behind though despite no points on offer some favourites make a move it is Lopez Garcia who is antsy again with Van den Broeck and Siutsou.

Almost simultaneously Javiar Moreno also of Santander makes his move from the breakaway. This looks a last desperate dig though as the breakaway has about 50 seconds on the Lopez Garcia group and 1.20 on the peleton.

Pirelli come to the front to draw back in first the favourites and then keep going to baton down the breakaway catching J Moreno last of all.

Not sure why they did that really, it played right into the hand of Pellizotti's whose very impressive Youtube squad took charge into the final ascent to Gouviea.

Peter Velits leads the charge with 5km to go

It is a relentless pace from Youtube here, but as we get on the climb there are some riders who feel they have even more power in their legs. It is Daniel Moreno of Benfica who instegates a move and the yellow jersey is quick to respond on the tail of Samwel (Bimbo Nutella).

The impressive Theo Eltink latches onto the back of Grau and with 1800m to go Franco Pellizotti looks to join the Dutchman with Iban Mayo just behind.

As Grau and Eltink move past the fading Samwel and D Moreno, it is Pellizotti who puts on the after burners.

He goes on to ease to victory by a couple of lengths over Grau and Eltink.

So two in a row for the Italian, meanwhile Iban Mayo tries hard to make sure there are no time gaps.

The race jury however decide to award some small gaps anyway! It has been a tough day Mayo led home a 29 man front group, though none of the favourites were missing.
