Welcome to the preview of the first Pro Tour stage race after the Tour de France. The race consists out of six stages trough-out the Asturias region in the North-west of Spain.
As you can see, this race is all about mountains, and more specific about the mythical Angliru which is included 3 times. The race is completely the same as last year, except for one change. A sixth stage got added, and it will probably be an interesting one. We start at the foot of the Angliru, and the first one to reach the finish 16km later wins the last stage. Sounds simple enough, but it hardly is.
Last year, Arroyo won the race with a 12 second difference to Alejandro Valverde. This year, Valverde isn't here and Arroyo is riding for Lipton. But the chance of winning it again is very small if you look at the contender field.
Cunego, Dekker, A. Schleck, Fothen, Intxausti, Popovych, Pozzovivo and so on. The contenders field is immense with most of the top climber of the world present. And the race is most likely going to be decided in those mountains, seeing the downhill TT from the Angliru isn't going to give gaps bigger then a few seconds as we can see from last years results.
Not that much of sprinters present as their is only one stage they can be sure off, and that is the first one. Stage 5 is more likely to end in a break than a sprint. But for the first stage, look out for; Hoffman, Caethoven, Freire and Grillo.
The favorites for me?
| 1. | Damiano Cunego | | 2. | Benat Intxausti | | 3. | Andy Schleck | | 4. | Thomas Dekker | | 5. | Sergio Henao Montoya |
For me, Cunego is still the n°1 climber in the world, which he showed once again in the Giro. The moral winner of the Vuelta, Intxausti, also has a good shot here as he is riding on home ground. Behind them it's more open in my opinion, but Andy Schleck and Thomas Dekker are never bad bets for the mountains. And why not put Henao Montoyo in a possible top 5 list. The kid won a mountain stage at the Tour and has proved his potential up the mountains.

Great preview.
It will be very difficult to win this one, but at this point of the game, it's all about getting some points to move away from the relegation zone -- with a more secure margin than the current one |

When I made the planner I thought Plaza could have a real shot at podium here. Now a top 10 would be good, I mean the startlist is unbelievable strong, Cunego, Andy, Dekker and Fothen all riding here

Last race for Worlds qualification points to be earnt (admittedly I have no idea yet how close it is between countries ) - and its going to be a good race. All 3 2010 GT winners, this year's TDF runner-up, and the 'moral Vuelta winner' (I like that description btw!).
Last year Intxausti got 6th and the points jersey, but wasnt aggressive enough, Top 5 has to be the target this year.

This is going to be interesting. Such a strong field and such mixed battles going on here. I'm really looking forward to it even tough my top3 goal is quite impossible

This one is all about damagecontrol...
On a good week Carlos Castaño could end up 8th or 9th here, but why the hell did I even consider bringing Samuel Sánchez here? Damn... I hope Castaño can get into top 10 and Sammy be the best of the helpers in 18th or so... That would be my dream scenario here.

I love stages 4 and 6 for originality - another one of those cool things you can do with the man game.
Cunego is a big favourite - but perhaps a Spanish rider or two can stick with him and nip past him in a sprint?
I am sure Nespresso, Energie Diesal and Carmuese will be watching eagerly here - this could be a key battleground for relegation right here!
Waiting for fenian to come steaming in about the 'moral winner' of the Vuelta! But would have been nice to see Valverde vs Cunego (well vs Spilak too)

The Spaniards are going to need to get a gap on him, rather than hope to actually outsprint him

My dream top 10:
1. Thomas Dekker
2. Jaroslav Popovych
3. Damiano Cunego
4. Beñat Intxausti
5. Markus Fothen
6. Andy Schleck
7. Ruben Plaza
8. Carlos Castaño
9. S. Henao Montoya
10. Domenico Pozzovivo
In that case I won't lose all too much on my competitors... Seems unrealistic that Popovych can climb that high and that Castaño can do so aswell.

If its your dream top 10 surely it should be 1. Castano?
And Popovych - he only really went well later on in the Tour, so these shorter stage races arent necesarilly best suited to him.

I was sure I had Gomez Marchante in this race, but looking at the planner I don't.
I've got Duarte going after a Top 10 goal. Bad, bad move. |

Its the PT race most suited to Duarte route wise .. just not competition wise

Will be interesting to see if any sprints will occur... As I see it the sprint top 10 could very well be something like this:
1. Kobe Vanoverschelde
2. Cameron Meyer
3. Oscar Freire
4. Nolan Hoffman
5. Sergio Marinangeli
6. Nikolai Trusov
7. Martin Pedersen
8. Roman Maksimov
9. Artjom Timofeev
10. Steven Caethoven
Will the pack even try to catch the breakaway with so poor sprinters? I assume the chase will be from B&O and Sony, but is that enough?

Carmeuse 1st, Starbucks 2nd, Nespresso 4th. Thats a bad sprint for Energie.
And SotD, youve ovverated Cam Meyer there, he has yet to deliver in any sprint, ever. (Excluding 1 win in a weak CT field last season at the Tour de Beauce). And evidently, youve underrated Caethoven

Nice to see Kreder in top 10. He could be very well our main sprinter next season.

I guess I got left out of the 'bring sprinters to the one sprint stage race' triumvirate.
Damn you all, you fierce relegation rivals... my revenge will be resounding!

Meyer even fails at leading out.

Slightly different actually
Thats the profile for the Brasstown Bald Georgia stage - and it also popped up in the Tour of Romandie in 2009.
