Stage 2

A short hilly stage to Roa de Duero – if someone like Ricco wants to really challenge Taaramäe then today is a chance to put him under serious pressure.

Only two riders break from the peloton today – Rovny in the KOM jersey and and Lobato (Bimbo). At the first intermediate sprint, Rovny takes the Bimbo man by surprise and easily outsprints him. The gap back to the pack is already over four minutes. Nazon takes the sprint when the pack finally get to the prime.

Lobato is none too happy about that move from Rovny. On the day’s first climb he really pushes it on and Rovny loses contact.

Lobato takes the points at the top and refuses to ease up. The gap back to Rovny is 30” and over the next climb it is Lobato who leads again with Rovny second. The gap between them is up to 50” with the pack a further 8 minutes back.

As the chase picks up speed there is a crash as the pack heads down into the valley – Cadel Evans is quickly back up and on his bike but he will do very well to get back up to the front now.

The third climb of the day is peaked with 50km still to race. Lobato is in front and still riding strongly. 1’25” back and really beginning to feel it is Rovny. No hostilities have broken out in the pack yet, but the pace has really picked up and Rovny is just 2 minutes ahead of them. Martinez (Quiksilver) jumps from the pack at the top of the climb to steal some points in the KOM competition from Schwab (LEGO).

One more categorized climb to go – the longest of the day, but not the steepest. Rovny is struggling but still ahead of the IKEA and Bacardi driven pack. Yellow jersey Nazon is long gone from the lead group which is down to 49 riders. Cadel Evans is not one of them.

34km to go and Rovny has been reeled in. Still 15km to the top of this climb – out front Lobato has an advantage of 2’32”. We think Rovny has done enough to cling on to the KOM jersey – but we’re going to need the statisticians to get their calculators out at the top of this climb if Lobato can hang on to his advantage.

There is 10km to the top and Lobato still has 2’16”. Santander have moved to the front of the pack. No move from any of the favourites yet.
5km and the gap is down to 1’45.

Still no move.

Lobato is still strong and riders are starting to be shelled out the back of the main bunch.

3km to go to the top now – and the Cobra strikes.

Ricco is blasting off the front of the bunch. Behind him Taaramäe is trying to respond. Rodriguez (Bimbo) is going too. 1’07” to Lobato.

Next to go is Lloret (Petronas), Hesjedal (Pirelli), Petrov (Tinkoff), Colorado (Benfica) and Noval (Telenor).

Santander are at the front but running a bit out of steam. Alcaron (IKEA) then jumps before finally Abal (Santander) also takes off up the road.

Back to the front, and Lobato has made it over first with a 26” advantage. Our stats guys tell us he has done enough here to take the KOM jersey from Rovny. Alcaron is second showing great legs at the top of this climb and Petrov is third.

The favourites are all more or less together and they ease up a bit over the summit. Lobato has his head down. 15km of mostly flat roads to the finish and a 30” advantage to hold on to.

There is a group of 10 of them and they are not chasing. The chasing is being done by the main pack and with 8km to go they have gobbled up this main group of favourites.

There are 49 riders in this group and they have a minute to make up on a tiring Lobato.

It’s Santander en masse at the front – Lobato is approaching 1km to go. I think they have left it too late here.

They have – an overjoyed, emotional Lobato has the time to a celebrate a fine victory in the final few hundred meters.

Mountain man Colorado is the strongest finisher in the pack taking second place, with Hesjedal 3rd, Noval 4th and Martinez 5th.

Taaramäe will no doubt be more pleased than Ricco with today’s stage. Both should be grateful they are not Cadel Evans – all his hopes of a good overall finish surely in tatters. He is a very lonely figure at the finish – 52nd at 3’26” back.
