Stage 1

Stage one is a mostly downhill stage in to the finish in Medina de Pomar. The sprinters will fancy their chances in this one if they can make it over the big lump in the road with just over 50 km remaining.

The weather is good and bad today – sunny skies and unpleasant gusts from crosswinds.

A break is away containing 12 riders by the first intermediate sprint. The sprint is taken by Hansen (Red Bull) from Cardoso Espanola (Yamaha) and Bru Pascal (Quiksilver). Joining them in the break is Ovechkin and Rovny (Tinkoff), Saldarriaga (Benfica), Aramendia and Mazur (LEGO), Linden (IKEA), Colby (Petronas), Caccia (Pirelli) and McEvoy (YouTube).

TV coverage kicks in at the perfect time with just over 50km to race and the day’s major difficulty about to be faced.

Intesa and Telenor push the pace in the pack and the lead 12 have 2’33” as the road starts to ramp up. In the lead group it’s clear Tinkoff have their eyes on the KOM jersey today. Ovechkin hits the front and really drives it up the climb. Rovny jumps off the front a few hundred meters from the summit and....

He’ll be on the podium later to put on the mountains jersey. 2nd over the top is Colby, with Aramendia 3rd. The pack is still a good two and a half minutes back.
Has the climb put any of the sprinters in difficulties as they go over the top?

Hochmann (LEGO) has to dig deep to hang on but he manages it. If his team can keep him out of the wind in the run in to the finish there’s a chance he can recover.

It seems the pack are not really pushing it on as 10km later the gap has gone out a little to close to 2’50”. It is starting to come down again as the day’s final intermediate sprint looms. It’s Hansen again – this time from McEvoy and Linden.

There’s 30km to go now and with the lead down to 1’42” it looks as if they’ll be caught. Unicredit, Telenor and Intesa are reeling this in now slowly but surely. Rovny, Aramendia and Colby prove to be the strongest of the riders in the break but with the winds gusting strongly they cannot stay away. They are caught just as they go under the 10km banner.

It is a strongman’s finish and with the winds the way that they are things start to break apart a bit on the run in.

Urtasun (Benfica) pushes on with teammate Benitez on his wheel. Only a handful of riders manage to stay with them and in the hunt for the stage victory. Traksel and Hutarovich (Intesa), Brown (Telenor), Trusov (Tinkoff), Borghesi (Unicredit), Kojcan and Nazon (Bacardi), Beppu and Arashiro (Red Bull), Stauff and Hochmann (LEGO) and Perez Arrieta (Santander).

The sprint is off and it is the Bacardi duo that has got the jump by the looks of it.
Nazon is coming around Kojcan.

And with an absolutely devastating burst of speed Nazon sweeps his way to victory here.

Borghesi pips Arrieta to 2nd, while Hutarovich and Brown round out the top 5.
