DH: Simon Spilak stamped his foot down on the Bales yesterday, can Dekker repond in the next couple of days?
Kg: We have four fantastic climbs for you today, the riders immediately climb up the Peyresoude (1st Cat), that is followed by the Aspin (2nd cat) and then the ascent of Col de Tormalet (HC) and finally Aubisque (HC). However with about 65km between the top of the Aubisque and the finish in Pau, most expect a big regrouping before the finish.
Sm: It is a difficult one to predict, certainly I would expect a group to come home together but we see sometimes a couple of riders eliminated from the GC picture in a stage like this. The King of the Mountains competition will be hotly contested today, I notice the top 3 on GC are in the top 3 positions I doubt they will be contesting the points.
DH: Yes it is Popovich 91, Dekker 83, Spilak 81, Uran 73, Contador 72, Henao 69, Gomez Marchante 64, Fothen 60, Kashechkin 58 and Schleck 57.
Kg: So highlights of those climbs showed that some of those riders were interesting in gaining points. On the 1st Category Peyresoude it was Andy Schleck who outsprinted Contador for the full points.
Schleck - > Contador - > Caruso - > Kashechkin - > Gesink - > Uran - > Henao - > Pluchkin
Kg: KOM standings then... Popo 91, Contador 85, Dekker 83, Spilak 81, , Uran 80, Henao 75, Schleck 72, Kashechkin 67, Gomez M 64, Fothen 60, Pluchkin 54, Gesink 53.
Sm: Contador leading those that are going for the points, though a number of the GC men surely have to be towards the front when they crest the Aubisque and looking further ahead the Tormalet tomorrow.
DH: Gautier (Lafarge) and Le Mevel (Auber) tried to get away on the 2nd Category Aspin.
Two riders look to break clear on the second climb
Kg: But they were never too far away from the peleton and towards the end of the climb the points were going to the usual suspects.
Schleck - > Gomez Marchante - > Caruso
Kg: Pretty convincing there from Schleck, ahead of....
Uran, Contador and Kashechkin
Kg: KOM Standings: Contador 91, Popovich 91, Uran 87, Dekker 83, Schleck 82, Spilak 81, Henao 75, Gomez M 73, Kashechkin 72, Fothen 60, Pluchkin 54, Gesink 53.
Sm: It was beginning to look like Contador vs Uran here for that one, though I still felt the top 3 on GC are a threat.
DH: Caruso with 28 KOM points and 14th on GC at 10.50 went at the bottom of the Tormalet.
Caruso goes for a solo break
DH: It was a strong move and Warner Brothers decided to let him go for now.
The peleton allow Caruso some breathing space
DH: Caruso was riding very well and took the Tormalet solo.
Sm: Caruso is not really threatening anybody on GC or in the KOM comp so it is a okay to let him go,Caruso has looked strong on the early climbs today so he has a chance.
Caruso crests Tormalet alone some five minutes clear
Kg: Behind we had the scramble for KOM, won by Alberto Contador who now moves in control outright of that competition.
Contador - > Gesink _ > Henao - > Alarcon - > Fothen - > Tschopp - > Pluchkin - > Schleck
Kg: No Uran here really gives Contador a nice cushion: Contador 109, Popovich 91, Henao 89, Uran 87, Schleck 87, Dekker 83, Spilak 81, Gomez M 73, Kashechkin 72, Fothen 70, Gesink 69, Pluchkin 60 and Alarcon 60.
Sm: Contador really just has to place well on the Aubisque to look really good in the polkadot battle.
Kg: Meanwhile Caruso had got the gap to 6.30 by the sprint point which he took, in second Vanderbiest (Pearl) had survived the climbs and sprint for second.
Vanderbiest finds himself last sprinter standing
Sm: If he can survive the Aubisque then he would be a favourite for the final sprint.
Kg: Onto the lower slopes of the Aubisque we go live.
DH: Welcome then and we can see Caruso solo here now a full 9.30 ahead of the front group.
Caruso close to the virtual lead
DH: It is Jaroslav Popovich's Carmuese team that are pacing this and trying to keep the gap sensible.
Sm: Yes, what a good attempt by Caruso to bring himself back into the race here and he could well move up if he can hold his form.
Carmuese look to protect their podium place
DH: Of all the riders Popovich seems to have moved up the most on the Pyrenees, a podium position is looking good at the moment.
Sm: Yes and that certainly didn't look on the cards before stage 15.
DH: We are coming near the top now and your man Smowz Vanderbiest seems to be struggling.
Vanderbiest loses contact near the top
Kg: A lot of riders flirting with elimination today, the Autobus was about 30 minutes back at the last check.
DH: Caruso then will crest, in fact he already has - it moves him up to 68 KOM points, certainly no threat to Contador. It is Uran who is sprinting to make up lost ground and I cannot see Contador anywhere.
Sm: Henao is threatening too, this is opening this up a bit again.
Uran takes second on the Aubisque
DH: Full results of placings in the Aubisque, Caruso, Uran, Alarcon, Henao, Gesink, Perez Cuapio, Fothen, Pluchkin, Gomez M and Contador.
Kg: KOM Standings then ... Contador 114, Uran 105, Henao 103, Popovich 91, Schleck 87, Dekker 83, Spilak 81, Gesink 81, Gomez M 79, Fothen 78, Alarcon 76, Kashechkin 72, Caruso 68, Pluchkin 67.
Sm: The top three will battle it out tomorrow I reckon.
DH: We go for an extended break now... with Caruso solo.
Caruso is solo with 20km to go
DH: Yes Caruso at the last sprint is still seven minutes clear and it is pretty clear he is going to win the stage.
Sm: He will move right up in the top ten as well, an excellent performance.
DH: Behind the pack are uninterested in sprinting for seconds, the gaps are much bigger than thet now.
Pack roll over the sprint.
Sm: Yes, the days of one second gaps seem to be over, thoughts are very much on tomorrows stage and the time trial now.
DH: Up front there is no catching the Lafarge man and he will be taking back five plus minutes on everybody today.
Caruso takes a solo win
DH: Bravo Caruso, Bravo!
Sm: Behind they are sprint and here comes Spilak.
DH: Yes the Slovenian is stamping his authority on the race taking the sprint from the 73 man front group.
Kg: They are coming in 5.55 down on Caruso!
Spilak leads the pack home
DH: Caruso moves up to 5th place on GC ahead of Schleck, Pluchkin and Contador.
Sm: Outstanding day for him, can he hold it together tomorrow though?
