Tour de France Preview and Discussion thread
Smowz
Welcome to the preview to the Man Game Tour de France 2011.. I hope you will join us for this 21 stage epic that has brought some of the brightest and best to this year's tour.

The route broadly follows that of the 'real life' Tour de France 2010:

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/parcours-4.jpg

There are some differences particularly in the early going.

Stages 1 to 7

We do open with a prologue in Rotterdam, which will create some small original gaps. This is followed by six 'flat' stages, though you'll note that stage 3 is not exactly the same but does retain some of its flavour with some late climbs that may well shuffle the pack somewhat. Stage 4 does not contain the cobbles that the real life Tour presented, this is probably to attract a greater range of sprinters and GC candidates. Indeed the opportunity may be there for a sprinter to take the yellow jersey (time bonuses are enabled) if they are consistent enough in these stages. The prologue will give a TT specialist a big chance to hold the jersey for a number of days too.

Stages 8 to 14

The expected sprintfest in the early stages will be forgetten as we enter the alpine arena, we start with the Station de Rousses climb that should start to separate the riders. Stage nine sees the riders climb the Col de la Ramaz, before going up to Avoriaz, both the 1st category ascents will look to test the riders. Stage 10 is probably the queen stage of the alps (as it was in real life) we have the Col de Colombiere, Aravis and Col des Saisies to weaken the riders before the Hors Cat Col de la Madeleine.

The eleventh stage into Gap adds some hilly unpredictability to the race, before we settle down to the transition stages to the alps. How the riders go about stage 13's late ascent to Mende will be interesting, may be good for the hilly sprinter type.

Stages 15 to 21

So to the Pyrenees where we begin with our second Hors Cat climb up to Port de Pailheres that is followed by the shorter test up to Ax-3 Domaines. Part de Bales awaits the riders in stage 16, site of the infamous chaingate in real life what dramas do the man game riders have in store for us? Stage 17's flat rating is misleading we have two 1st cat (Peyresourde and Aspin) and two more HC rated climbs (Tourmalet and Aubisque) to go over before stage 18's showdown on the slopes of the Tourmalet. Most of the top GC candidates here have some ability against the clock and the long 51km test Bordeaux to Paulliac on stage 20 should make our final shuffling of the pack sandwiched by two sprint stages the finale of course down the Champs Elysees.

Team Presentations

Philips Target: Podium

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Dekker.jpg

1. T.Dekker
2. F.Bellotti
3. S.Cohnen
4. J.Fuglsang
5. L.Gerdemann
6. T.Lövkvist
7. E.Martínez de Esteban
8. J.Pecharroman
9. M.Reimer

Blink and you will have missed Thomas Dekker's only individual performance so far this year was a low key 6th at the Criterium International and the Northern European based squad badly need Dekker to deliver for them here. To be fair the team have targeted races like the Tour of Northern Europe and Tour of Germany, Dekker 2nd last year in the Dauphine was probably wise to skip it this time round. He is well supported in the climbs by Gerdemann, Lovkvist, Martinez and Pecharroman, Dekker should improve on 4th last year to a podium which is the sponsors least target here.

Domina Vacanze Target: Podium

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Andy_Schleck.jpg

11. A.Schleck
12. D.Calderón
13. M.Eibegger
14. T.Frei
15. C.Naibo
16. N.Nuyens
17. R.Pauriol
18. B.Schröder
19. S.Taberlay

It seems strange to say this but despite finishing second at the Vuelta Andy Schleck never really seemed to get going there - perhaps it is in comparison to the year previous where he dominated the Vuelta so utterly. However Domina Vacanze's stated goal is a podium here at the Tour and to podium at two Grand Tours would be something special. Plenty of medium level climbing support with the likes of Eibegger and Naibo as well as an interesting wild card in Nick Nuyens.

Team B&O Target: Stage win (top five for Pluichkin)

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Pluchkin.jpg

21. A.Pluchkin
22. M.Christensen
23. M.Hacecký
24. N.Keinath
25. D.Klemme
26. S.Kruijswijk
27. R.Mestre
28. A.Steensen
29. K.Vanoverschelde

At press time Pluishkin looks set for an underwhelming performance at the Tour de Suisse, not the type of encouragement B and O need for this race! Narrowly unable to defend his Tour de Romandie crown it would be seen as an achievement for the Scandenavian based squad to get a top five here. Hacecky, Klemme, Giro sensation Keinath and Mestre offer some good climbing support. The teams stated goal is to take a stage win from somewhere, Pluchkin is the best bet in the mountains, though Belgian Vanoverschelde could well take a sprint.

Pearl Target: Podium

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Fothen.jpg

31. M.Fothen
32. G.Levarlet
33. Y.Offredo
34. P.Panayotov
35. M.Richeze
36. J.Rodríguez
37. B.Samoilev
38. R.Vanderbiest
39. P.Weening

Defending champion Marcus Fothen came out of hibernation to register a second place at the Dauphine in a hot field. That should prepare the German for the onslaught at this years Tour de France. Pearl Adidas have been in fine Grand Tour form with Rujano scrambling a top 10 in the Giro and an excellent podium at the Vuelta. Panayotov, Weening, Samoilev, Leverlet and Rodriguez give Fothen ample climbing support. Pearl Adidas also have a decent sprint shout in Frenchman Vanderbiest.

Festina Target: Top 10

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/alberto-contador.jpg

41. A.Contador
42. M.Ardila
43. M.Bernaudeau
44. T.Kvist
45. A.Lavoine
46. A.Madrazo
47. F.Mourey
48. L.Schädlich
49. B.Sonnery

The mood in the camp is low following a difficult Vuelta and Contador will look to redeem himself here. Fifth place at the Dauphine was a definite step forward and if he can take another step forward who knows. As ever Festina are multi-faceted, Ardila and Madrazo offer 1st class support in the mountains, whilst Frenchman Sonnery offers some big sprint hopes. Surely Contador can deliver a top 10 even if the company here at the tour is hot.

Warner Bros. Target: Points Jersey
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/SimonSpilak.jpg

51. S.Spilak
52. C.Barredo
53. T.Boonen
54. G.Coletta
55. J.Flecha
56. S.Perez Fernandez
57. J.Redondo
58. Y.Talabardon
59. R.Van Houts

Competent in the Ardennes with three top tens including a 3rd at Fleche Walloone, Spilak's season really took off with a superb win against a loaded Dauphine line up. Winning that one will make the Slovenian a favourite here and why not he can TT and climb as well as anyone else and as third here last year showed has the stamina for a Grand Tour. Talabardon, Redondo and Perez Fernandez offer good climbing support. It shall be intriguing to see how Flecha and Boonan ride surely stage wins are in the offering for those two if they work together well.

Carmeuse Target: Top 10

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/popovich90.jpg

61. J.Popovych
62. S.Caethoven
63. J.Camier
64. S.Casar
65. R.Di Gregorio
66. T.Gallopin
67. M.Kneisky
68. C.Lhotellerie
69. O.Solis

Popovich is the main man here supported by French darlings of the press Casar and Di Gregorio as well as Bolivian mountain goat Solis. The Ukrainian hardly set the world alight on his way to 8th at the Dauphine, but this sums up Carmuese's season. The first goal here is of course to nab their season goal but surely something a bit more spectacular is required, Steven Caethoven perhaps can nab a sprint or two and maybe Popovich can elevate his climbing a bit?

Wolfskin Target: ? (Top 5 Gesink)

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Gesink.jpg

71. R.Gesink
72. M.Kreder
73. F.Mancebo
74. W.Poels
75. M.Sieberg
76. L.Ten Dam
77. M.Van Stayen
78. B.Vaugrenard
79. R.van der Hugenhaben

The pedigree is there with Gesink winning the Tour of Romandie as well as doing a good job in the Ardennes, second at Fleche Walloone the best job. Plaza did a great job at the Giro can Gesink replicate that success here? Van de Hugenhaben, mancebo and Ten Dam offer some climbing support - and Gesink should have some X factor in the shorter punchier type of climbs. Jack wolfskin have a strong sprinter un Van Stayen in their line up also.

Vesuvio Target: ? (Top 10: Uran)

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/RigUran.jpg

81. R.Úran
82. J.Cabreira
83. D.Claerebout
84. S.Einsle
85. D.Galimzyanov
86. M.Iglinski
87. C.Kelly
88. M.Kvasina
89. D.Medvedev

There is an air of frustration about Vesuvio this season who will feel a Liege-Bastogne-Liege defence is slim pickings compared to previous years exploits. Indeed the suffering Benat Intxausti string of performances outside of the top 5's have hurt them. At press time, Rigerberto Uran seemed to be responding with an improved performance in Switzerland and perhaps a landmark performance in the tour will be there for Vesuvio? Uran is obviously an excellent climber and can TT very well, super climbing domestique Medvedev is here again and South American cycling fans will be in the mood following Rujano's Vuelta and Henao Montoyo's Giro.

Wikipedia Target: Top 5

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Phinney.jpg

91. T.Phinney
92. C.Barton
93. R.Eastman
94. S.Ivars
95. C.Mai
96. C.Meier
97. D.Pate
98. M.Sprick
99. D.Zabriskie

At last the US squad take a Grand Tour seriously Smile USA will be eager to see how wonderkid Taylor Phinney will do, currently going very strongly at the Tour de Suisse the Tour of Califiornia champion will come with a whirlwind of press interest. The question is can he survive the Alps and Pyrenees which a shout at taking the overall or a decent GC place in the final Time Trial? Ivars, Sprick and Zabriske is the best climbing support that Wikipedia can offer that appears lightweight in comparison to other teams. Zabriske will perhaps be aiming for an early stint in yellow.

Lipton Target: Top 5

101. A.Kashechkin
102. O.Avelino
103. T.Bontenackels
104. R.Bourdouxhe
105. G.Brizuela
106. C.Di Maggio
107. G.Gazvoda
108. F.Matamoros
109. V.Ratiy

Lipton's strongest all round rider Andrei Kashechkin seems to be peaking at the right time at the Tour de Suisse. It will make him one of the favourites here at the tour and Lipton certainly have looked all year like an excellent stage racing outfit. He has the superb youngster Ratiy offering top notch support and Avelino is more than capable of delivering a stage win. Unlucky last year can Kashechkin stay on his bike to deliver a decent result for Lipton Iced Tea?

Lafarge Target: Top 5

111. G.Caruso
112. W.Bonnet
113. M.Docker
114. C.Gautier
115. A.Jeannesson
116. D.Menchov
117. S.Pardilla
118. F.Taillefour
119. P.Thuaux

An interesting joint leaders role for the tour in Italian Caruso and Russian Denis Menchov for lowly placed Lafarge. If relegation to the Continental Tour and possible disbanding is too be avoided then a big performance is needed here. Mitch Docker was brilliant at the start of the Giro will be needed to make a contribution here as the GC duo may well find it hard to crack the top five maybe even the top 10 despite good support riders in Pardilla, Thuaux and Jeannesson.

Nespresso Target: ? (stage wins and good GC with Henao)

121. S.Henao Montoya
122. M.Durán
123. N.Hoffman
124. S.Lay
125. I.Lo Cicero
126. J.Maillet
127. H.Mottin
128. M.Sibilla
129. G.Steurs

Despite being one of the most exciting climbers in the world Henao Montoya may find it hard to break into the top 10 here due to that last 50km time trial. The Columbian is not the worst against the clock but will need some great displays in the mountains, though many are eager to see him repeat his heroic attack on stage 20 of the Giro. It may be fair to say that this is not one of Nespresso's season goals Hoffman is a good sprint hope with Lo Cicero though the fact that FRenchman Fedrigo stayed away speaks volumes.

IKEA Target: Taaramae top 10?

131. R.Taaramäe
132. J.Alarcon
133. J.Bjelkmark
134. N.Brolin
135. A.Flügel
136. J.Giaux
137. D.Kupfernagel
138. G.Larsson
139. M.Westling

The team that has been terrorising the Continental Tour stage races this year are here as wild cards deservedly to challenge Pro Tours finest. Tour de San Luis winner Rein Taaramae will look to develop into a fine stage racer here and is possibly in the shop window for next season also. Another name to watch out for is yet another Columbian mountain goat Jose Alarcon, perhaps a rough diamond next to the better all round skills of Uran and Henao Montoya he is still hot property. Alex Flugel is a dangerous prospect on the hilly stuff as he proved winning the hilly stage 3 at the Tour Down Under.

Colombia Target: ? (Top 10 for Gomez Marchante?)

141. J.Gomez Marchante
142. J.Arango
143. J.Castañeda
144. P.Deignan
145. H.Gallardo
146. A.Klöden
147. C.Knees
148. H.Machado
149. M.Rubiano Chavez

Season seems set up following Valverde taking the Vuelta, proving the World Champions Grand tour pedigree. Clearly the Vuelta was the season goal, though a decent Spanish stage racer in Gomez Marchante has been saved for this. Jose Angel was erratic at the Dauphine but did manage a stage win there and a repeat here along with a slightly more consistent GC performance would be well celebrated. Castaneda has some solid sprint claims, whilst Kloden and Deignan offer Gomez at least some climbing support.

Sony Target: ? (stage wins with Granjel Cabrera)

151. W.Pedraza
152. J.Danacik
153. L.Fernández Oliveira
154. R.Granjel Cabrera
155. F.Johansson
156. C.Meyer
157. M.Mori
158. V.Renäng
159. M.Öste-Macdonald

With Granjel Cabrera and Cam Mayer in the squad it seems likely that Sony could be on the winners podium at some point in Le Tour. It would be fitting if they could do so because they have had a sensational first season in the Protour. Columbian Pedraza offers some faint GC hopes, but he seems outclassed in this company.

Starbucks Target: Stage win
161. R.Kiserlovski
162. F.Bacquet
163. M.Breschel
164. F.Ciccarese
165. T.Criel
166. V.Dyadichkin
167. T.Lowe
168. M.Renshaw
169. J.Tschopp

Unlike Sony promoted Starbucks could do with some results here and whilst Kiserlowski is an outstanding prospect backed up by the decent Trent Lowe it is difficult to see them cracking the top 10 here. Breschel did pretty well without landing the big win at the Giro and may find some of the finishes to his liking. Plenty of good all round breakaway hopes to for the coffee company.

Bbox Target: Happy to be here
171. S.Paulinho
172. M.Astarloza
173. L.Didier
174. A.Greipel
175. L.Hoste
176. K.Kroon
177. B.Mollema
178. F.Stalder
179. T.Voeckler

Bbox are not likely to get promoted from the Continental Tour following a fairly dismal season there. But they have brought their best riders here to the tour and will have high hopes of a stage win somewhere. Asterloza and Paulinho are decent enough climbers who may hope to slip away on the climbing stages, meanwhile Hoste, Voeckler and Kroon will surely go for a breakaway win at some point. Andre Griepal a last minute out of character signing will no doubt be looking for a big sprinting performance.

La Gazzetta Target:?

181. J.Agudelo
182. D.Bennati
183. R.Flens
184. S.Marinangeli
185. M.Mugerli
186. M.Osella
187. M.Santambrogio
188. D.Van Winden
189. W.Vasquez

One Grand tour team and Le Tour is not it, though perhaps that is unfair as it is Bennati who is undoubtedly the teams biggest star here and we know what he wants. Last year's Protour champions La Gazzetta have not really kicked on this year despite Cunego winning the Giro yet again. Bennati has been having a tough season and will be looking for a big performance, who knows the Italian could be in the shop window next season. Vasquez, Osella and Agudelo will also be looking to show how well they can climb without being domestiques.

Energie Target:?

191. J.Perez Cuapio
192. M.Biondo
193. C.Corioni
194. F.Echarri
195. J.Rodrigues Silva
196. C.Rojas Villegas
197. M.Soler
198. P.Torres
199. A.Vital

Another team clearly who targeted other grand tours this year will still feel they have some punch in the climbs with Soler and Perez Cuapio. Corioni though is the teams main focus for the sprints. Energie Diesal also promoted last year need some results like Starbucks.

Auber 93 Target: Stage win Early yellow jersey stint

201. P.Rolland
202. M.Bouet
203. J.Coppel
204. M.Drujon
205. C.Kern
206. C.Le Mével
207. J.Mespoulède
208. F.Morizot
209. J.Thire

As we know their GC ambitions were always limited and Pierre Rolland perhaps is a top 15 hope at best. The big headline here is breakaways and Jerome Coppel for the Prologue. Still an all French team will be well supported.

Control Target: To survive 21 stages Smile

211. D.Navarro
212. S.Batchelor
213. T.Boonratanathanakorn
214. A.Charteau
215. C.Dessel
216. K.Michely
217. D.Moncoutié
218. A.Niyonshuti
219. X.Zandio

Navarro, Charteau, Dessel, Moncoutie and Zandio have been drafted into the Control team to please the fans as they high five and sign autographs at the start and finish lines with no ambitions other than to get to Paris. Chances of winning are limited to being able to start with the publicity caravan.

Schedule and reporting:

The first stage on will be the prologue on Monday evening(10th Jan). Stages 2 and 3 will be posted on Wednesday, 4 and 5 on Thursday and on Friday we shall see stages 6 and 7.

The first weekend sees the arrival of the alps with the rather tame Station de Rousses on Saturday morning, and the more difficult Ramaz/Avoriaz stage on Saturday evening. The key stage 10 madieliane stage will be sunday midday - ish and the unpredictable stage 11 will follow on Monday morning.

The transitional stages 12 through to 14 will follow on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday evening will see the first Pyreneen stage into Ax 3 Domianes. Thursday evening we see what the man game riders make of Port de Balles.

The Tormalet stages will be posted on Friday the 21st, the flat stage 19 will occur on Saturday morning, followed by the lengthy Time Trial on Saturday evening. Finally the last stage will be on Sunday 23rd January.

and Finally:

I will be altering the style of my reporting for this special race introducing 3 commentators:

Daniel Harrison (DH): The lead man will try to report in unbiased fashion but will inevitably favour one or two riders.

Smowz (Sm): Manager of the Red Bull Cycling team from the Continental tour - offers a 'professionals opinion', watch him wet his pants when a Bbox or Ikea rider does well.

Kingston (Kg): The 'statto' man from the 'Paris dungeons'

Tough field, hoping for a Top 5 for Uran, but it ought to be a climber's Tour here. Ill tip Schleck for the win

And assuming the target bit is there for team goals, a couple you missed:
- Warner Bros: Points Jersey
- Auber: Stage win
- Starbucks: Stage win in all 3 GTs (Although I suspect theyve already failed this)

Great preview, Smowz. One little mistake though: Plaza was in the Vuelta and not the Giro. Wink

A top 5 or a top 10 for Gesink should do it in the general classification, but I'm also hoping for a stage win and can't wait to see what Van Stayen will be able to do in the sprints.

Spot on with Bbox. Happy to participate here, and just looking for good results. Hopefully, a top 10 on a stage or a day in the KoM jersey. Or something in that direction.

Bbox have no goals here, and just wants to show off in the biggest race in France.

I'm betting on National Bonus for a French man in the Netherlands/Holland (whichever place we start in) to secure that much needed stage win. Otherwise, it's down to breakaways and the final TT, which as we've seen before, depends a lot upon recovery stat as well, which Coppel won't beat the main GC favourites on.

Good preview - enjoyable to read. Can't see passed Spilak myself for the win.

OMG a tough peloton. I should actually be rather lucky for Contador to do top 10 here:

1 Markus Fothen
2 Andy Schleck
3 Thomas Dekker
4 Simon Spilak
5 Taylor Phinney
6 Alexandre Pliuchkin
7 Robert Gesink
8 Rigoberto Uran
9 Rein Taaramae
10 Andriy Kashechkin

This is definately not an impossible outcome, and with riders such as Henao Montoya also there I'm not too confident that Contador will do top 10. He doesn't seem very eager to be in the front group, that's for sure.

Also I believe that my sprinter Lavoine will be main and not Sonnery, although one could be hoping for another scenarion.

Nice preview, and what a spectacular race we will see... Top 15 for Rolland though? With this pack? :-P

Screw that Im winning this one. That is if Alex manages to stay on his bike thoughout an entire race. That's gonna be an even bigger challenge than winning the race.

Wow -- I guess we'll have to rely on crashes to get a few of those super-strong riders out of the GC. Otherwise, this is going to be extreme.

Anyway. Dekker, please save my season.

I am pretty certain they did not get a stage win in the Giro though they were unlucky with Breschel (a couple of times) and Visconti ( 3rd on stage 19).

Freire of course tooks some stage wins in the Vuelta didn't he?

I am little surprised that Amador for them was not here, he would have possibly been outclassed but you never know, surely would have been better than Kiserlowski.

SotD: Is that a prediction or a nightmare for you Smile

Nightmare :-)

I could go with a more suitable predicition I think. Imo Andy Schleck won't podium at this race, but you'll never know :-)

this will be one heck of a battle. Hoping Zabriskie or Phinney can win the opening prologue and grab yellow, but Coppel is the favorite in my books. I'd be very pleased if Phinney can finish in the top 5 given the remarkable field.
