Let me introduce you to the new Sky Professional Cycling Team. We have a perfect mix between British and international cyclists and it is our aim to improve cycling in Great Britain and win the Tour the France within three years with a British rider. For this year we are also aiming high. The spring classics Milan - San Remo, Ronde Van Vlaanderen, Gent - Wevegem, Paris - Roubaix, La Fleche Wallone, Amstel Gold Race and Bastogne - Liege - Bastogne, the Grand Tours and the British and World Championships are targets for the forthcoming season. To archieve these goals we have signed Chris Boardman to train the team and to have our riders in perfect shape at the right time. If funding allows it another trainer will be signed later on. Also important are the future generation of British and international Sky riders that should bring the Sky Professional Cycling team to the top of the charts. We are therefore very happy that we have signed Dariusz Kohut who will be our head of scouting. John Lee will be leading our medical staff.

Lofkvist is our leader for multi-stage races that do not contain too many mountains. He will also be our leader in the Vuelta, where usually the field is a little weaker and we expect Lofkvist to do well. He may also ride the Giro to prepare for the Tour, but this is not set in stone yet. Wiggins has a contract for 2011.
I do realize that Sky is not the most original team choice. I did choose it since it has a perfect mix of climbers, sprinters, ITT specialists and cobblestoners. Moreover none of them really excel. This means that with Sky you can fight for a victory in every race, but they will never come easy.Edited by harry on 14-12-2010 22:26
Australian National ITT Championships
Buninyong – Buninyong
43 km
With no real Australian ITT specialists in the squad this race will be more a warm up for the road race than an actual attempt to take a victory here. Favourites for the race are Rogers, Evans and Porte.
It was Adam Hansen who set a very fast time early in the race. He is part of Team HTC – Columbia who have besides Hansen also have title contenders in Rogers and Goss. However, the Australian ITT would be a big disappointment for Team HTC. Besides Hansen nobody managed to set a great time. Rogers did not get further than 9th place and Goss would even finish outside the top 10.
Cameron Meyer riding a great race
For quite a while nobody managed to get past the time of Hansen, but eventually it was beaten by Cameron Meyer. The young rider of the Garmin squad put a great time on the clock and for some time it looked like he was going to win. Especially, with Porte and Evans putting disappointing times on the clocks at the intermediate timing checkpoints.
Porte did not ride a great race but still managed to get to the podium
But eventually it was Haussler, just cycling with the Australian nationality, who managed to beat Meyer with 8 seconds. Haussler will be the new Australian ITT Championship and carry the Australian jersey in the ITT and TTT races he will participate in this year.
Haussler is the new Australian ITT Champion

Favorites for the win are Evans, Rogers and Gerrans and it is not strange that the strategy of the Sky team is completely based on Gerrans. Hayman or Sutton were supposed to take part in a breakaway and force the other teams to do the work. With only three riders in the pack one cannot control it. Once Evans or Rogers attacks, Gerrans was supposed to jump along.
The race began quietly and not so much happened in the first thirty kilometers. After that a group with Docker, Tanner, Roe, Hayman, Sanderson and Trevis Meyer managed to get away. Windsor made the jump from the pack to the group a little later.
The leading group gradually increases its lead on the pack
In the pack everybody was looking at each other. Fly V Australia brought the largest team but none of their riders was capable of doing extra work. Other large teams as Sky and Garmin were not doing any work as they had riders in the breakaway. HTC Columbia did not want to do any work for Evans and Haussler and instead of setting the pace in the pack they send Goss away. Nobody followed as it was quite far to the finish. Goss managed to make the jump to the leading group and behind him nobody was doing anything. The leading group could take several minutes.
Goss has seen enough and leaves the pack
Even after catching up with the leading group Goss showed that he was the strongest. He increased the pace and soon the first riders were dropping off. Docker and Roe tried to get away but were not allowed. Eventually Goss simply rode away from his fellow attackes. He makes it to the finish alone and is the new well deserved Australian Champion.
Goss simply rides away from the others
A couple of kilometers behind him finally Evans, Davis, Gerrans and Haussler showed their faces. In the end Davis was the fastest. McEwen won the sprint of the pack.
Goss is the new Australian Champion

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 1
Clare – Tamunda
141.3 km
For our sponsors that have interest in the Australia market we decided to bring all our Australian riders to the start in Clare as well as another local hero Henderson. To the squad were added Carlstrom, Portal and Vigano. The plan is to score stage victories in mass sprints with Henderson. Sutton, Vigano and Hayman will be involved in the sprint trains. Carlstrom will guide Henderson through hilly sections of the tracks. Portal will try to jump along with breakaways and Gerrans is there to try something in stage 3 and especially in stage 5 where there are two difficult hills right before the finish.
Directly from the start several riders tried to get away. With a hill a couple of kilometers before the finish several riders would not feel very confident making it to the finish in excellent shape to win the mass sprint. And with the teams of these riders not doing any work a breakaway may just make it to the finish. But the pack did not let them for quite a while. Eventually it were Curvers and De Haes who got a steady 1’00” gap with the pack. Ovechking, Portal, De Lis, Fothen, Schar, Merle, Ongarato, Coyot and Lancaster made the jump from the pack to the leading group. The twelve of them got a maximum gap of 5’00” but nobody really wanted to commit to stay up front.
The breakaway easily got a gap of 5’00” on the pack
Saxo, which didn’t have any of their riders up front, increased the pace of the pack and eventually brought it back just before the ascent to Menglers Hill. The intermediate sprints at Riverton and Kapunda were taken by Portal and Ovechkin. Meersman led the pack over the top of Menglers hill and he will be the one wearing the climbers jersey tomorrow.
The pack on the Menglers Hill Road
Nobody was allowed to leave in the last kilometers and a mass sprint was unavoidable. Bennati showed that he still had fresh legs after the climb of Menglers Hill and won the stage before Steegmans and X. In the difficult last part of the stage the pack has broken and several riders lost valuable time today, including pretty much the entire sprint train of Cavendish.
Bennati wins the sprint in Tamunda

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 2
Gawler – Handorf
133.5 km
This is a relative short race with an easy finish, which perfectly suits Henderson. Therefore today the Sky Professional Cycling Team will do everything to set up Henderson for the perfect mass sprint.
Several riders try to break away directly from the start. Especially Stroetinga and Oss repeatedly showed their faces early in the race. Feline, Gourov, Stroetinga and Oss managed to get away and arrive first at the intermediate sprint at Lyndoch. Izagirre, Davis, Gerard, Sapa, Galimzyanov and Cretskens join them a little later. Team Sky has place Vigano and Portal in front of the pack in order to maintain the gap with the leaders around 3’00”. Galimzyanov leads the first group over Mount Torrens with a lead on the pack of 3'18".
The leaders have a steady 3’00” lead on the pack
Besides Sky also HTC Columbia and Rabobank are placing riders in front of the pack. The lead of the first group is decreasing fast. The organisation is falling apart and Stroetinga tries to go for himself. In his attempt he crosses the second intermediate sprint first. Izagirre, Galimzyanov, Cretskens and Felline jump along. Then Izagirre tries to get away. Galimzyanov goes in persuit while the others don't seem to have anything left. Nevertheless, one by one they are swept up by the pack.
Izagirre does one last desperate attempt to stay ahead
8 kilometers before the finish several riders fell and De Haes, Isasi, Eigberger and Sicard lose time. Up front the sprinters go ahead at full speed and today Steegmans was the best by far. Henderson managed to score a very nice second position before Hammond.
Steegmans winning superiorly

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 3
Unley - stirling
136 km
With the difficult finish of todays stage, the Sky Professional Cycling Team is not playing out Henderson today, but instead aims for an attack of Gerrans at the final climb. Portal will again try to join in the breakaway.
Several Riders are trying to get away directly from the start. With the hilly finish it might just be one of those stages that does not lead to a mass sprint. However, nobody is getting away easily. At the intermediate sprint at McLaren Flat, Rui Costa takes the full points followed by Reynes and Boom. They are part of a group of 10 with only a marginal gap with the pack. Eventually Rui Costa and Boom managed to get away on the Wickhams Hill. They are followed by Feng, Reynes, Koren, Beyer, Eisel, Kaisen, Eichler, Krivtsov, Reimer and Portal at 1'08"and the pack at 3'32". In the decent Rui Costa and Boom are caught by their purchasers and the thirtheen leaders take a 5'50" lead on the pack. Quick Step and Radioshack start to decrease the gap as they do not have any teammates up front. However, their riders do not seem strong enough. Eisel takes the intermediate sprint at Echunga before Reimer and Celis. The pack has only marginally decreased its gap with the leaders to 5'23".
The leaders have a 5’00” lead on the pack
With only 24 kilometers to go the pack does not seem to be decreasing the gap fast enough. The leaders still have a 3'17" lead. Portal was no longer able to keep up the speed and he dropped back. Up front Boom and Rui Costa easily ride away from the other attackers.
Boom and Rui Costa easily ride away from the others
In the pack Cobo, Popovych, Gerrans, Schleck and Devolder are trying to get away from the others and to make the jump to the leaders. Also Rojas and Kreuziger joined in. It was too late. Boom won the sprint from Rui Costa and Reynes the sprint of the second group. The pack with all favourites present finished at a conderable distance and most likely do not longer compete for winning the general standings of the Santos Tour Down Under.
Boom wins the sprint for Rui Costa

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 4
Norwood - Goolwa
149.5 km
Since this again is a flat race with an easy finish it is very well suited for Henderson. The Sky Professional Cycling Team therefore completely set its strategy around Henderson. Portal and Vigano set the pace of the pack. Hayman and Sutton will take part in the sprint train and Gerrans and Carlstrom will protect Sutton and Henderson.
Directly from the start riders are getting away. They hope to stay up front as well just like yesterdays episode. Davis, Walker, De Lis, Hoj, Kohler and Gerard manage to get away, but don't get a whole lot of space from the pack and are caught a little before Fox Creek Road. Goesinnen reaches the top first before Davis and Jeanesson. De Weert, Van Groen, Hoj, Sapa and Goesinnen eventually got away and take a small lead on a second group with Kohler, Celis, De Haes and Gerard. The pack follows at one and a half minutes. Both leading groups would unite at 90 kilometres from the finish, but together they never got more than 3 minutes from the pack and were eventually caught. Hammond takes both intermediate sprints before Hutarovich and Finetto and before Hutarovich and Felline.
Hammond takes both intermediate sprints and does great business for the point standings
A mass sprint was unevitable. Henderson showed that he was the strongest today beating Hammond and Cavendish on the finishline.
Henderson takes the first win for Team Sky

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 5
Snapper Point – Willunga
149 km
With a difficult last section of the stage this is a stage for Gerrans. He will go on the offensive in the end. Henderson will try to catch some points at the intermediate sprints and try to keep on with the first group and thereby maintain his position in the general standings. This will be difficult though…
Several riders try to get away directly from the start. With a difficult finish this may just be one of the stages where a breakaway may lasted to the finish. HTC - Columbia has set a fast pace in front of the pack that due to a strong sidewind breaks in two. It reunites quickly though, but several riders in the back are warned.
Freire takes the intermediate sprint before Boom and Jeanneson. In the confusion the pack has broken again. Bennati takes the second intermediate sprint before Henderson and Felline. The pack has broken again, but due to the low pace it reunites a little later. Gavazzi, Iglinksky, Gerdemann and Kritkskiy use the confusion to get away. Gavazzi is the first to reach the top of the Willunga Hill before his fellow attackers. Behind him Devolder and Nuyens are placing their attack. They are caught back a little later.
Bennati takes the second intermediate sprint
At the second passage of teh Willunga Hill the race explodes. Up front are still Iglinksky, Gerdemann and Gavazzi. Kritskiy had dropped back. Behind them a group with Cobo, Devolder, Kritskiy, Schleck, Popovych, Kroon, Gerrans, Brutt, Moreau, Finetto, Kreuziger, Nuyens, Maaskant, Costa, Fischer and Tankink. Boom and Rojas try to hang on. The pack is at a minute behind.
A small group is trying to close the gap with the leaders
Iglinskiy is the first to arrive at the meet before Gavazzi. Gerdemann had to let them go in the very last meters of the race. Behind them Cobo won the sprint of the second group before Maaskant and Fischer. The general standings have been shuffled quite a bit after this stage.
Iglinkskiy was the strongest today

SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER – Stage 6
Adelaide – Adelaide
90 km
A short flat race, so the Sky Professional Cycling team is working for Henderson again.
A couple of riders tried to escape but were not allowed to. According to most teams this race is destined to become a mass sprint. Eventually a group with Cobo, Kuschynski, Sorensen, Hondo, Davis and Riblon managed to get a gap of 1'00" with the pack. They maintain their lead till the first intermediate sprint, which was won by Sorensen, while Kunschynski takes the mountain points. Cobo takes the second intermediate sprint. All the time the gap with the pack has been less than one minute. Roughly 30 kilometers before the finish the attackers were finally caught. The pace of the pack is really high and it is difficult to get away now.
Against all odds some riders try to get away
Another mass sprint and a lot of confusion in the race to the finish with Weylandt falling and several other sprinters out of position. Henderson took full advantage and scores another victory.
[i]Henderson takes his second victory[/b]
All in all the Sky Professional Cycling Team did pretty well. Gerrans did not get as high in the general standings as we would have liked. Especially since he has the same time as Rojas at third place. Both victories of Henderson are a wonderful results even despite missing on the points jersey.

GIRO DELLA CALABRIA – Stage 1
Palmi - Cosenza
172 km
We are not sending a strong squad to the Giro della Calabria. Cioni and Possoni will be our leaders. There are two very flat races that perfectly suit Henderson who is in great shape. Vigano and Hayman will support him and take part in the sprint train. Nordhaug and Calzati will support Cioni and Possoni in the difficult stages and Henderson in the flat stages. Calzati will also take part in breakaways in these stages.
Directly from the start Ackermann, Campagnaro, Possoni and Van der Velde leave the pack directly from the start. Stortoni, Celli, Muto, Beuret, Usov, Arrieta and Ricci Bitt join the attackers a little later and their lead on the pack slowly increased to 8'20". Van der Velde takes the intermediate sprint before Muto and Stortoni.
The leaders quickly take a 8 minute lead on the pack
Vacansoleil, Liquigas and Quick Step puts some of their riders up front in the pack and slowlys starts to decrease the gap. Nevertheless, the leaders arrive at the second intermediate sprint with a 4'00" lead on the pack. The intermediate sprint was won by Usov before Celli and Van der Velde.
Nibali does a lot of work on the Pontama
On the Pontama Muto rides away from the other attackers. Behind them the pack is rapidly closing in due to hard work of the Liquigas and Vacansoleil riders. One by one all attackers are caught. Still Nibali sets a strong pace. Eventually a small group with Kuschynski, Cataldo, Felline, Capecchi, Hoogerland, Nibali, Belotti, Pietropolli, Vorganov, Carrara, Gusov, Finetto, Marcato, Muto, Mori and Codol. Finetto and Pietropolli fell during the slippery decent of the Pontama. In the sprint Hoogerland showed that he was the best today.
Hoogerland wins the sprint of Belotti

GIRO DELLA CALABRIA – Stage 2
Cosenza – Crotone
178 km
This is a flat race which is perfect for Henderson. Hence the strategy of the Sky Professional Cycling Team is to push towards a mass sprint. Calzati will try to take part in the daily breakaway. All others will help Henderson.
Several riders try to escape early, but initially the pack wouldn't let them. At the Moungrassano Pavarain, Kostyuk, Giordani, Loria and Velo managed to get away from the pack. Metlushenko, Champion, Rizza, Hollenstein, Capelli, Polishchuk, Vandenbergh, Roussau, Ratti, Meier, Gitto and Gufler try to join them a little later. Pavarin is the first one on top of the Mongrassano. The group of 5 now has a lead of 38"on another group of 5 with Champion, Rizza, Hollenstein, Metlushenko and Capelli. The pack follows at 1'44". Both leading groups would unite in the downhill of the Momgrassano and also Popkov and Meier join. At first there is no reaction from the pack. Then Sky puts a couple of riders up front. They really want to have a sprint at the finish. Rizza takes the intermediate sprint. The twelf leaders have a 4'37" lead on the pack with more than 100 kilometers to go. The second intermediate sprint is won by Popkov. The pack has slowly decreased the gap to 3'54"with still more than 50 kilometers to go. Although the pack is not decreasing the gap with the attackers rapidly, it breaks constantly due to the strong winds. With 30 kilometers to go the gap is still 3'44".
Giordani taking his chances
At 20 kilometers the gap is still more than 3 minutes and it seems like the attackers are going to stay up front. Giordani tries to take this to his advantage and tries it on his own. It was a fantastic move as he holds his lead to the finish. Champion becomes second before Meier.
GIRO DELLA CALABRIA – Stage 3
Crotone - Catanzaro

The first stage of the Giro della Calabria has been a big dissapointment for the Sky Professional Cycling Team. We hoped that Cioni and Possoni would be strong enough to matter in this race. In that case we could use them as leade.rs is several lower ranked races and perhaps even use them in the Giro d'Italia. However, it seems that this is above the level of both riders. They will be used as general helpers to our other leaders and may not get their contract renewed or at least get their status reduced. Unless they prove otherwise...
Corti and Ackermann escaped early in the race. They managed to arrive at the intermediate sprint (won by Ackermann) before the pack. After that several riders managed to join them. Malcarne wins the second intermediate sprint before Tonti, Bodrogi, Muraglia, Ackermann, Borisov, Akargov, Modolo, Agosta, Kogut, Marzoli, Corti, Angeloni. The pack is 3'30"behind at that point.
The leading group on the Chiaravalle Central
At the Chiaravalle Central it is Tonti who reaches the top first together with his twelve fellow attackers. The pack follows at 5'42". Modolo takes the San Vito first. At this point the pack has decreased its gap with the leaders to 4'35" due to work of the Liquigas and Vacansoleil squads. In the front of the race Angeloni and Kogut are dropping back. Also Marzoli droppes back as a result of a fall.
Hoogerland goes on the attack
At 15 kilometers from the finish Hoogerland goes on the attack. Nibali and Belotti follow a little later but they cannot get away. Up front it is Corti who wins before Modolo and Tonti. They have gotten away from the other attackers in the last kilometers.
Corti wins the sprint

GIRO DELLA CALABRIA – Stage 4
Soverato - Reggio di Calabria
164 km
This last stage is perfect for Henderson and again the Sky Professional Cycling team will aim for a mass sprint and try to launch Henderson from a perfect position. We all the breakaways making it to the finish lately we also aim to have one of our riders up front.
The attackers quickly manage to get a 7’00” lead
Abakoumov, Vigano and Vandenbergh manage to get away from the pack and are joined by Pavarin, Velo, Scognamiglio and Agosta a little later. The pack does not seem to respond to the breakaway and quickly they build up a lead of 7'00". Then Garmin (for Hunter) and Lampre (for Petacchi) start increasing the pace and the lead of the attackers quickly shrinks. At 17 kilometers before the finish Agosta attacks. This attack is easily countered by the others but when Scognamiglio places another attack, only Abakoumov can follow. The pack is then only 50" away and eventually all attackers are caught. It is going to be a mass sprint. Henderson initialy choose the wheel of Bozic but quickly switched to Petacchi that started the sprint from very far.
Petacchi starts the sprint from very far
Henderson was in a perfect position and easily took the win. It is already his third victory this season!
Henderson takes the victory
