Welcome to the mountains, The Vuelta kicks off today with pressure on so many riders: of the three favourites three are under pressure: Contador needs some big stage wins to get back in the race, and where better to do it than today, no flat at all means if he has the legs he could make a serious impression. Then we have Schleck who, despite destroying this event last year, is no longer undisputed leader of his own team. Valverde looks most comfortable, but the last time he performed in the PT big mountains was almost two years ago, so rustyness will be a factor
Then there are the pretenders: Intxausti needs a result today, if he's not leading the race atop the finish then something has gone wrong, and after the Giro, he can't afford something going wrong again. Brajkovic has been talking big, now he is best placed for gold, can he seize his opportunity with both hands.
If you want more, there is the King of the mountains, which is set to be played out on the battleground of the first few climbs, before the GC takes over on the 25% finale, let 213km of pain begin
Rienda Segura beats Ospina and Veelers to the first sprint, Stundzia and Szmyd are with them
As we hit the first climb, despite the break having 5 minutes, there are some attacks
Rienda Segurra wins the first climb ahead of Stundzia, Szmyd and Ospina.
Veelers takes 5th
The first 6 attackers are Medvedev, Rangel, Castro Rodriguez, Jiriakov, Nogaledo and Taberlay at 4'05"
Cohnen is just behind them at 4'28"
Anton is on the front and trying to pull back Sibila Romero and Brandt 5'15" behind the leaders
Stundzia leads Szmyd and Ospina over the top of the next climb
In the peleton, the work has been left to Carmeuse who are unsurprisingly happy to let this go
Next climb and it's Szmyd, Stundzia, Ospina, putting Stundzia into the climbing jersey for now
while at the top Veelers is pulled back by the 7 chasers, now 2 minutes off the lead
As Stundzia defends his provisional jersey from Szmyd and Ospina, they are caught by the chasing group
Panaytotov also attacked the peleton on that climb, cresting 6'17" after the leaders
Anton is next at 6'50"
Then the peleton at 8'54", with 113km left Colombia and Nespresso have taken up the chase
Rangel leads the break over climb 5, and with Rienda Segurra 2nd, aand Taberlay 3rd Rienda Segurra takes the provisional lead by 2 points
Cohnen is solo 1'20" later
Brandt and Sibila Romero are next at 2'20"
Panayatov is solo at 3'49"
Then Veelers, who at +4'51" is still leader on the road, although not for much longer
Anton is 30" behind him
Then the peleton at 8'33" who, now with just 70km to play with, are starting to look like they won't pull back the break
Climb 6 and it goes Szmyd, Jirikov, Rangel and Rienda Segurra 4th who lets Szmyd back to within on point of him
the peleton tops this one at 7'30", they have 65km to go
Taberlay gets the penultimate climb, followed by Rangel and Castro Rodriguez, Szmyd's 6th is enough to put him in the lead, however as the final climb gives 40 points and Szmyd only has 25 the break will have to make it to have any chance.
Over the top with 50km to go and the peleton is still 6'40" back, the break has an excellent shot at this
The final casualty of this final climb is Roelandts, who can't quite make it. So long Golden jersey
The 8 man leading group (Ospina and Stundzia are gone) hit the final climb with a 6'28" advantage on the peleton, however with 25km of uphill to come, don't count any chickens yet
Through the final sprint point they ride, Rienda Segurra trying to set it up for teammate and on paper best climber Medvedev, followed by Taberlay and Rangel
Trofimov sees the gradient rise and immediately goes for it, the gap to the break is 6 minutes
As the peleton go through the sprint point he's got 1'15" on them
Medvedev and Szmyd go clear in the break
Trofimov is a man on a mission today and as he goes past Ospina he's built up a 90 second lead on the peleton
As Cafe de Colombia are letting Trofimov go De la Fuente, Lovkvist, Perez Cuapio, Pauwels and Barredo try their luck
Barredo is the strongest of them, and goes solo 45 seconds off Tofimov
While Lovkvist and De la Fuente are pulled back
10km to go for our lead pair, who are sharing the work nicely
The chasing break are 30 second behind them
Amador is next to attack the peleton
Then Abal and Plaza
Trofimov goes through 10km to go, 2'42" off the lead
Barredo at +3'50"
Then comes Amador cruising past Perez Cuapio, and just 20 seconds behind Barredo
The peleton is close to them though, and Marzano and Tenorio attack
Abal, Tenorio and Plaza join Amador and Perez Cuapio
Now Valverde attacks, Intxausti and Colom follow
The two big guns fly past Barredo
Rujano and Schleck have no choice but to respond
Up front Medevedev is solo.
Valverde and Intxausti settle down together a minute behind Trofimov and 2'40" off the lead
Rujano and Schleck reach Valverde's group, as Schleck tries to push on Valverde follows
Valverde struggles to increase his pace, while Intxausti is in the wheel quickly
The three of them are together again, with Rujano just behind
Arroyo and Brajkovic are coming up to them
5km to go and Trofimov catches the third group on the road, a minute ahead of him is a stage win
Unfortunatly 45" behind is Valverde who has a small gap on the group of 5.
Intxausti pulls him back, as Contador joins the fray
So Valverde attacks, all except Brajkovic can follow
Again Valverde manages to get a small gap, and Contador is struggling
Intxausti pulls the group back to Valverde though, up ahead they can see Trofimov catch Szmyd
At the back of the group, Brajkovic and COntador fight back
Valverde is in fine form today and goes again, Intxausti and Rujano dig deep to follow
Schleck is just about on his limit as he struggles to go again
Valverde passes Szmyd as Intxausti looses inches
Up he gets though, as Trofimov is reeled in
Rujano, Schleck and Arroyo join them as they close on our leader
And with just over a kilometer to go, he is pulled in, so harsh for Medvedev
Rujano is now leading the way as for the first time, Valverde slips to the back
Rujano starts the sprint
Valverde moves forwards as Intxausti fades
Arroyo and Valverde close on Rujano
But Rujano takes victory, Arroyo sneaks second ahead of Valverde, while Intxausti's 4th gives him back the overall lead. Schleck will be happy with 5th
Trofimov will be overjoyed with 6th, while 7th must be a bitter pill for the brave Medvedev
Pellizotti, Contador, Brajkovic and Karpets finish together a minute back
Then Szmyd and Danielson
Before most other climbers come in together
So, with Schleck still 2 minutes back, but Valverde and Trofimov fairly close and hilly terrain tomorrow, how soundly will Intxausti sleep with the golden jersey tonight?
