Amsterdam to Utrecht 209 km
We have somehow found two small climbs over the largely flat parcours from Amsterdam to Utrecht, there is two hotspot sprints the last fairly close to the finish, which always creates some interest.
Plenty of Dutch riders in the peleton looking to get away in their home country but chances of usurping Rogers from pink seem slim before the Team Time Test in Italy. There seems some speculation that Gazzetta are not up to the task there!
The sprinters though will look to capitilise on the oppurtinities here in Holland because a lot of the stages once we get into the Giro proper are quite hilly. Lo Cicero (Nespresso), Lavoine (Festina) and Luke Rowe (Wiggle) are listed as favourites for this one. The truth is though without Bennatti there is an open spot for a decent Italian sprinter to fill the gap, Grillo (Sony Ericsson), Rizza (Lipton) and Gatto (Vespa) may fit the bill. Dutch fans are hoping that Theo Bos of Carmeuse can put in a decent fist, but many cycling experts feel he just cannot quite get into road cycling.
Our first attack of the day is as we leave Amsterdam...
Herrore Llorente (Domina Vacanze) makes the opening move
This opened up a lot of attacks from the peleton, it seems numerous riders are not happy to just sit in and wait for later stages. The prize of KOM for several days is perhaps tempting keen riders out - the attacks are controlled and chased. Four riders are not good enough to resist the gravity of the peleton.
Hauled back in.
Herrerro Llorente is one of them, along with Van Zandbeek (Lafarge), Pagato (Vespa) and Broers (Wikipedia) are back in the peleton, but a number of riders are clear. These six for example are pulling away...
Six keen to show themselves.
This group are lead by Von Emden (Kack Wolfskin), then Balloni (Vespa), Steenson (B+O), Fenn (Carmause), Pinotti (Cafe de Columbia), Mouris (Phillips). Behind this we have two groups of three, first.
Bret (Lafarge), Healion (Cafe de Columbia) and Leezer (Pearl Adidas)
and then finally moving out of the peleton...
Jacobs (Carmuese), De Dalto (Domina Vacanze)and Van der Pluijm (Warner Brothers).
The peleton seem hesitent to let this go, but ultimately they allow the 12 riders to go and by the first sprint its established. Carmuese set it up well and at the prime they sieze the points.
Fenn takes some bonus points and seconds
Leezer (Pearl) is second and Jacobs also from Carmuese takes third. The riders have largely formed up, but it is just a group of 11 at front one poor sole has not made the junction.
Van Der Pluijm has a long day chasing ahead.
This break may make the finish but it would be doubtful in these early days, however with the two climbs one lucky rider will take the Giros first KOM jersey. Its a bit misleading with the two climbs in todays route very light compared to what awaits the riders later! The opening KOM point is taken by B+O man Steenson.
Good TTer decides to make another day of it here.
Fenn is second and Healion is third. The second comes relatively quickly and with 500m to go it looked good for Steenson with him calmly leading the group of 11 over. But then bizarrely he moved aside...
No-one wants the jersey?
He cruises over in third place, whilst Healion wins the sprint with Jacobs second. It means Steenson and Healion both have the lead! A quick time check for you here the break has a minute on Van de Pluijm and 7 minutes on the peleton at 100km to go.
25km later the lead is gradually being reduced by a Gazzetta led peleton and poor Van der Pluijm seems to be fading. Its 2 minutes between the 11 and the Warner Brothers man and just 5 minutes between our break and the peleton. Is it still Gazzetta? Naahhh somelse is now doing the grunt work
Nespresso and Sony working together at the mo.
Both teams obviously have confidence in their sprinters. Nespresso's Lo Cicero is very fast but is suspect on hills this should work out okay today, whereas Sony are working for Grillo and maybe the Italian sprinter can deliver in his home grand tour. 50 to go and Van der Pluijm is back in peleton and the gap to the break is a steadily reducing 3 minutes. The final sprint bonification comes for the breakaway.
Steenson - > Van Emden - > Leezer
The gap continues to fall and with 26 to go the gap is just 1.23 some riders from the breakaway put on their last hoorah.
Five game tryers
Steenson, Mouris, Van Empden, Bret and Da Dalto are the men going for a final fling. But the peleton is now within sight of the riders, its Vespa who do the final catch of final man Da Dalto with 14 to go.
Last man Da Dalto caught by the green and black sqaud.
Today then will end in a sprint and with 10km to go the first sprint trains of this years Giro were formed.
pace snake in the middle
On the left we have Drujon (Auber 93), Renshaw (Starbucks) and on the right we have Minard of Lafarge. Its the early stages of forming the trains and 5km later we have a more complete picture.
Two sprint trains behind the pace snake.
Minard's early positioning has lead to a nice Lafarge train him leading with Docker behind him, then Breschel (Starbucks) Luke Rowe (Wiggle), Grillo (Sony Erikson) and Lavoine (Festina). Vespa have also formed a train behind legendary Bettini with Gatto being the man he leads, behind that is Lo Cicero (Nespresso) Haussler (Auber) and Rizza (Lipton). Most of the best sprinters are here in these evenly balanced trains.
3500m to go
Bettini does a great job and pulls the Vespa train level, the pace snake is disintegrating as the sprint is about to begin though...
Lafarge strike back
Minard puts in another burst - take not its Weylandt (Carmeuse) on far right hand side. The sprint starts...
Bettini's like one that will not flush
Vespa come back again in this up and down sprint, you'll notice that Weylandt is also moving up. Docker loses patience and decides to jump with 1900meters to go.
Docker jumps
It seems to work as now Breschel and Gatto are there in second, the expected moves from the other sprinters are not coming. Its between these three, as Weylandt fades also Breschel begins to move up.
Here comes Matti.
But Docker holds on in an excellent sprint over Breschel who was so close to catching him. Gatto is third for Vespa just just holding off Lo Cicero and Grillo.
No time to celebrate even!
Meanwhile gapped behind is Suaza (Carmeuse), he loses two minutes plus...
Carmuese have been active but a mountain man has a bad un
