After three hard fought days, finally Mohs had the yellow jersey. The question is would the Van Avermart and Mohs battle continue until the queen stage?
We have also had three different winners from teams also with legitimate GC claims Bimbo have Samwel, Petronas have Carrara and UBS have Perez Sanchez. This should take the pressure off when it comes that key stage six that is ever looming on the horizon.
The GC men have had it easy so far but today would be nervous because a fierce tropical win was blowing at the startline and promising to make things complicated. Unlike yesterday a lot of riders decided to attack.
Windy day makes a breakaway stay away?
The riders is this 9 man move are Weiss (Mercedes), Masciarelli (Pirelli), Rizio + Bodrogi (Unicredit), Matthews (Red Bull), Priamo (Yamaha), Allonca (Santander), Kupfernagel (IKEA), Garbelli (Vespa) and Te Brake (Telenor). Most of these riders have been away before, though why KOM contenders Garbelli and Dviri are here is anyones guess! The wind dies down a bit in the middle section of the race and the peleton have this under control with 60 to go its only 4 minutes.
Dan Holloway (what a workhorse) pulls the peleton.
Entering the last 50km the tropical wind does pick up again, Pokerstars are leading this and you feel it is almost like we are in North Europe cobbles mode as they are causing chaos behind. First rider of note to be in real trouble is off form Bbox man Andre Greipal.
bad times for Andre
The breakaway had held on for quite away, they had mopped up all the sprints with all being won by Mercedes man Weiss. But ineveitably they would be caught and dropped by the speeding peleton. Telenor without a decent climber were choosing today to make their play.
Telenor in full flow.
Gaps are opening up all over the place as the wind is really fierce. We can expect a coming together behind but at the front perhaps riders keenly going for it will get time gaps. With 8,500 meters to go we have 18 riders in the lead group.
Wind is creating a selection.
Who's here well 5 Telenor riders including Sabatini and Brown, two Pokerstars riders (but not Mohs), two Unicredit riders (Borghesi/Borrajo), two Yamaha riders (Ziegler/Impey), two Red Bull men (Beppu/Haider Anuawar), a UBS man (Kristoff), a Pirelli man (Tizza) and Van Avermart (Bimbo Nutella). The last name certainly keen to keep things going eager to take the yellow jersey back. But no serious final GC contenders. With 5 km to go this group have 53 seconds, though this is reducing by the km and with 3.5 to go the 18 riders are shedding away.
Small sprint trains!
Its the Unicredit duo, who are dominating and Impey and Van Avermart are on their wheel. Dan Holloway is to one side as once again Telenors sprint train is fading in the finale. As the sprint starts Holloway surprises with an early jump, Van Avermart and Borghesi (Unicredit) are trying to make a response.
Pokerstars number two man surprising?
Gaps behind are being recorded at 18 seconds and 7 seconds, these types of gaps may result in nuetrality. But Van Avermart knows that a win bonification will land him the Yellow jersey anyway and moves into top gear as Holloway completely blows up.
Bimbo Bombo
Impey is moving ahead of an also fading Borghesi but he is not going to be able to nag back Van Avermart. The Belgian takes an impressive win and returns as GC leader, but more importantly with Mohs way down will take a huge stride towards the Points jersey.
The officials were not really expecting such a scattered field and do not really have reliable timing equipment so they decide to keep most of the field in the same time.
