Unlike most of the stages we have four hills today which will give us a King of the mountains, 14 points are available so it will not win the competition outright but the winner of the most points today will carry the jersey until the queen stage at least.
This stage will also of course give us our first leader, overwhelming odds are on a sprint finish where Mohs (Pokerstars), Van Avermart (Bimbo Nutella) and Lars Crocket (Petronas) are given the favourites tag. The truth is it could be any one of numerous sprinters, we will have to wait to see who is in best shape after the 180 odd km today.
There is an early sprint that could have been a sprint fest but young Irishman Cieran Cassidy attacks from the gun!
The Irish arm of Vespa Caffreys.
This prompts a lot of movement in the peleton, plenty of riders are trying to get away and up the road presumably for the KOM jersey. Norwegian champ Kristoff (UBS) is also instigating several moves.
It's a long way from Scandenavia
It's very unsettled, a lot of riders want to get this down to smaller groups increasing their chances on bonification battles. Santaders Allonca and El Al's Dviri managed to create a decent gap from the other attackers who come under pressure from sprinters looking for the early sprint prime.
Baumann (Mercedes) leads sprinters
Allonca and Dviri (in that order) take the first two as Holloway (pokerstars) sprints to take 3rd place. Following the sprint six riders look to bridge across. Masciarelli (Pirelli) is leading the charge...
Attacking stuff from the Italian
He has already tried to get up the road, likewise for Matthews (Red Bull), Ziegler (Yamaha) and Kristoff (UBS). Two new names is Weiss (Mercedes) and Garbelli (Vespa), Cassidy it seems is done for attacking for the day. The new Vespa man is the hungriest and one of the better climbers in the group and he nips round the original two man break away to take the first mountain prime.
Is this the first KOM jersey wearer?
Dviri (El Al) is second and Weiss (Mercedes) takes 3rd on the 1st climb. Garbelli holds the lead through the sprint point as well, Dviri is second again and Kristoff is third. The El Al rider Dor Dviri takes control of the more demanding 2nd ascent and will take the extra points on offer this climb is worth 4 points.
Just how do you pronounce the El-Al mans name?
But with Garbelli second on this one this only makes them equal on points, Mascarelli is 3rd here and Matthews is 4th. So with two climbs left if looks like it between the lead two for the precious first jersey. Meanwhile the peleton are calm under the pace of Petronas and Ikea.
Petronas control as if Carrara defacto leader!
The gap is around 6 and a half minutes with 100km to go, sufficient for the climb points but not for the stage yet. The rider ride through the nest sprint prime that Kristoff takes over Mascarelli and Garbelli, as they move onto the regular 3 point climb.
More points for Dviri
So the El - Al man moves into the outright lead, Mascarelli took second here and Garbelli took third to keep in touch. Onto the last 4 pointer... only one rider seems capable of taking it as Dviri paces them up toward the top.
Dviri is polkadot man
So El Al have a foothold on this jersey for the next five days, Garbelli took second, Matthews 3rd and Weiss 4th. Good work from the Israeli. The peleton are serious as we come into the last 40km they have got the gap back to 2 minutes, indeed the breakaway panic and attack each other. The last man out...
Sorry couldn't resist its Michael Matthews!
Telenor lead the peleton back for the catch at 21km and its clear that a sprint is going to decide things. Under 5 km to go...
Sprint trains forming...
On the far right we have Sabatini and Brown, but most of the better sprinters are on the left behind the pace snake. Pokerstars have one with Holloway, Mohs, Sinner (Mercedes) and Van Avermart (Bimbo Nutella) battling against a UBS one of Forster, Richeze, Loddo and Greipal. Two kms later...
Telenor train going nicely
Its not really changed much, Telenor have a slight advantage as the pace snake just begins to slither away. Chris Sutton (Red Bull) is challenging the Pokerstars train! Indeed when the sprint goes, a couple of riders get a bit of a jump. Gottfried of Bbox is not really leading out Greipal properly (or the German is not following) as he jumps and Sutton latches on and passes. On the right hand side though Van Avermart is the man looking strong.
Bimbo's Belgian looking fast.
Mohs has had to switch to middle but is building up speed, defending GC champ Carrara is also in the mix. Trying to use Van Avermarts wake is late mover Unicredits Boy Van Poppel. It's too late though the Bimbo man has it!
Aver that!
Mohs snatched a decent 2nd place, Sutton held on for third and Carrara came close to a bonification in 4th. Clearly up for defending his title!
