Just curious if your position in the pack makes a difference in the amount of work/effort by a rider? Just seems like it's really easy to just put all your riders up front and have them hold position there. Only thing that you need to worry about is getting water/food and the pack surges or you hit a hill during that time. But outside of that there just doesn't seem to be a reason not to sit in the front of the pack?
If he's further behind, he'll have to make a stronger effort to stay on when people are getting dropped.
If he's further enough ahead to be in the wind, he'll waste a lot of energy (which is the main reason why he needs a guy protecting him)

Yes, but if you put the riders in front at the beginning of the race and make sure that they are not in the wind, then they will not catch wind until the end of the race.
Is there really a difference in regards to 'catching wind' in the game sense here? I've put people right behind the train (run them up to the front then just hit hold position) the whole race and it SEEMS like it doesn't make any difference if they're there or first 1/3 or last on a flat stage. I'm talking game mechanics and not real life obviously.
In a hilly/mountainous stage you obviously want them up front so they don't have to expend as much effort getting there when the pace gets fast, that's a given.
You see the pulse going up and the yellow bar going down if they are riding in the wind. But as I said, you can put them anywhere, they will not catch any wind unless they are in the "train".
