The final stage of Euskal Bizikleta - and everything is still completely open. In fact, the race can end in a bonus seconds decision as both Schumacher and Gilbert are just 11 and 18 seconds behind respectively.

The stage also contains no less than seven mountain sprints plus the points awarded on the finish line. For the same reason, it was no surprise to see mountain jersey holder Saldarriaga attack as one of the first.
It did take a while before the peloton let anyone go, but first to the top of the 2nd climb was Santander's Hernandez Gutierrez who had a minute down to Saldarriaga. He had 50 seconds to Landaluze, Porte, Eichler and Brolin, and they had Passalacqua, Kroon and the ever-attacking Aistrup right behind them.

Saldarriaga may also have had other intentions, though. Being just 2'17 behind in the GC before the stage, he now had a gap of c. 7 minutes to the peloton with 100 km to go. Obviously, it's still a lot, but you never know.

As a few of the early breakaway riders were caught, several riders decided to counter-attack: Bertagnolli, Serrano, Coenen, Proni and Pineau. A very strong group of riders who are all out of the GC.

UBS decided to bring them back, and with 60 km to go, just two riders were left in the front with a gap of 3 minutes: Saldarriaga and Gutierrez. This cooperation ended on the following climb with 35 km to go as Saldarriaga was dropped and caught by the peloton. In the same moment, 15th placed Hubert Schwab decided to attack. Mayo, Bellis and Scarponi followed.

On the last hill before the finish (which ends on another hill), the four and Gutierrez were back in the peloton, lining up for the favourites to decide it once and for all. Hesjedal, 10th in the GC, was the first to make the attempt - and shortly after race leader Kim Kirchen.

It took a few seconds for Schumacher to react, but when he did, he flew right past Kirchen along with Cobo and Gil.

The three slowed down, though, making it possible for Kirchen - and later the peloton - to rejoin. A group of c. 34 riders made it over the last hill before the finish. Only 18 km left to go to make a difference.

With crazy downhilling, Ginanni managed to make a small gap, and at the foot of the finishing hill, he had a gap of 20 seconds to the peloton.

With 5 km to go, Cobo made yet another attack. He was flying on the time trial, and is still in good shape on this final stage.
Lloyd and Kirchen tried to attack, but both - for the first time in this race - seemed unable to answer.

Igor Anton, however, had been completely invisible in the race - until this point.

Having now seen Kirchen's poor riding, several other riders attacked. First Flügel, then Gil, Hesjedal, Ben Nasser, Efimkin -- and at last, Schumacher.
The latter's attack made Kirchen dig deep and finally attack.

Cobo, however, had a very nice gap of 1 minute with just 2 km of climbing to do. Anton led the chase along with Gil, but with all the other favourites being pretty close.

Under the 1 km banner, Gil and Anton attacked to limit their losses and, perhaps, secure a spot on the podium. Meanwhile, 2nd placed Schumacher was also fighting with Kirchen right behind him.

And in front of them, Santander's Juan Jose Cobo, taking the stage win. And very, very likely to take the overall GC too...

Gil comes in 2nd right ahead of Anton -- more importantly, this means no bonus seconds for neither Schumacher nor Kirchen.
