A very short stage, just 93 km long. There are some bumps on the road, though, but if any teams wants to keep this together, it should be possible.
The stage started off with a very steep hill which was used by several riders to attack. Kroon was the most successful, getting ahead of everyone else and taking the 10 mountain points. He was joined by Schwab, Leukemans and Txurruka.
Behind them, a group of 9 riders formed: Iannetti, Herve, Lewis, Wegelius, Hernandez Gutierrez, Colorado, Sagan, Lund and Aramendia.
But today turned out to be what stage 1 should have been: Plenty of favourites attacking. With 50 km to go, Vorganov attacked along with Hoogerland, Coenen and Voeckler. And shortly after, they were followed by pre-stage favourite Ginanni. Schumacher, the huge favourite for winning the race, followed immediately along with Gilbert.
Ginanni couldn't keep the attack going for long, though, so he was passed by Schumacher and Gilbert. When they reached the large breakaway group, Schumacher stopped while Gilbert kept going.
Some teams were still calm, though, and with 35 km to go, the large breakaway group was caught. In front of them, Coenen, Gilbert and Hoogerland had a gap of 1 minute while the early-early breakaway (the 4 man group) had 20 seconds to the Gilbert-group. They were eventually caught, forming one group.
With 30 km to go, Voeckler tried again. Ben Nasser, Lloyd and Hesjedal immediately counter-attacked while Cobo followed shortly after. Vespa managed to bring them back in no time, though.
The endless attacks weren't done for today, though. An immediate reaction came from Anton who was then followed by Hesjedal (again), Evans and Wegelius. And on the final hill, Schumacher tried again, despite Vespa's high pace.
Ponzi and Bellis countered and managed to the to the top first, and in the end, the following riders had formed a group for the last 15 km of the stage: Ponzi, Hoogerland, Gilbert, Bellis, Kroon, Schumacher, Coenen, Schwab, Evans, Leukemans, Monfort, Kirchen and Ginanni. Efimkin, Cobo, Flügel, Gil and Voeckler were shortly after them, and then the peloton.
Cillit Bang isn't exactly known for having the wisest manager, but on this stage, it became evident that he probably should be fired. Bellis, who was in the front group with a good chance of winning the stage, decided to drop back to help Ben Nasser... Bellis did find Ben Nasser, but was to no help. Nasser rode right past him while Bellis ended up in the peloton.
One, who was very interested in winning, was stage 1's loser, Hoogerland. With 5 km to go, he attacked.
A few of the minor groups managed to gain contact with the group of favourites on the downhill section. Efimkin, Cobo, Flügel, Aistrup, Hesjedal, Lloyd, Ben Nasser and Anton, to be more specific. They weren't at the front when the sprint started, though. Schwab led the chase group, followed by Ginanni and Gilbert.
They weren't going to catch Hoogerland, though. After losing more than 11 minutes on stage 1, this is a nice way of getting revenge.
Gilbert takes 2nd ahead of Ginanni.
