Press Release:

11/10/09

The USA first started making splashes in the world of cycling in the eighties, but after 25 years racing at every level of the sport, we've found problems developing riders. We've had some men reach the top level of the sport, but we haven't had the infrastructure in place to consistently bring American's to the top level of the sport.

Not anymore. USA Cycling is proud to announce to formation of a U25 team, registered as UCI Continental and based in Izegem, Belgium. The team will attempt to compete in professional races in the United States, Europe, and around the world.

To get things started, here is our inaugural team.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/TeamPresentation.jpg

As you can see we have a mix of riders who have been Pro's, U23 Semi-Pro's, Amateurs, and Juniors, and although we hope to get good results from everyone, our three biggest signings are:

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Busche.jpg

Matthew Busche is a former domestic pro in the US with Kelly Benefit Strategies, and was signed to the Radioshack Pro Cycling team in 2010 until the contract fell through. We're looking forward to seeing how he can develop as a stage racer.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Talansky.jpg

Andy Talansky was a a pro with Amore e Vita in 2009, and although he initially chose to step back down to the amateur level for 2010 with Cal Giant - Berry Farm, he has changed his mind and chosen to join us for the near future. He's a strong all-rounder, and can win in the hills or in the sprint.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Selander.jpg

Bjorn Selander rode with the Trek - Livestrong team in 2009, and chose to join us over moving to the Radioshack team, saying he wants to develop further. Another strong all-rounder, he can help us in the hills or the sprint.

The first race up for us is the GP Etruschi, and we're sending a strong team, so we'll see what happens.

Race one for us is the GP Etruschi. We're sending a strong squad, but with a difficult field and flat finish, we aren't expecting much.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/Etruschi.jpg

First of all, here is young sprinter Aggrey Kay modeling our team jersey.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/TeamJersey.jpg

As you can see, BMC is supplying our Bikes, Bell our Helmets, and Reynolds our Wheels. SRAM has also decided to sponsor us with their components.

Early on, Danny Summerhill and Lawson Craddock were dispatched to the front to watch for and try to join a break. No one moved for a while, so Danny decided to do the instigating himself.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/HollowayAttack.jpg

He was followed by a number of riders, but did a good job of following the counter-accelerations, and as the riders hit the early hill for the first time was in the lead group.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/BOTD.jpg

Behind, the pack gave a long leash to the riders, with the gap hitting eight and a half minutes with about 80km to go, before the chase began.

With around 20 km to go and a 45 second gap to the pack, Danny was feeling strong, and decided to try and make it on his own.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/HollwayBreak2.jpg

A few riders tried to follow, but ultimately only the Italian rider Andrenacci from CDC was able to join him. The two formed up in the front.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/FrontDuo.jpg

But with 12km to go, they looked doomed to be caught by the other members of the days break (and the pack, who were just behind), and so Danny tried again.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/HollowayAttack3.jpg

But again, he it was just too much, and he was caught by the break and then the pack soon after.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/Caught.jpg
7km to go...

Both Andy and Bjorn tried to get involved up front, and although Bjorn latched onto the wrong group of riders, and found himself at the back of the pack as the sprint started, Andy was perfectly positioned up front.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/Talanskyintrain.jpg

The sprint opened up, and Andy smartly flew onto the inside, as he knew a right-hander was approaching, and going through the turn he was well placed.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/LastTurn.jpg

Onto the final straight, he was pushing himself, trying to get up to the front rank, and had moved into around 5th place as the finish approached.

i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk241/Deadpool_JUD/U25%20Story/Etruschi/FinalStraight.jpg

And despite his best efforts, Andy finished in 5th place. Still a great sprint from him, and a great start to our efforts as a team, to take 5th in an Italian classic with a strong field.
