Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja

Mid-way through the World's View Challenge, we have another race for the puncheurs (or is that the climbers?). Whilst half the continental tour seem to be in South Africa, the other half are here in Spain.

So, let's get to it!

A veritable tonne of attacks still haven't settled by the top of the first climb, but as it stands, Montenegro leads over Kannemeyer, Libert, Murgoitio, Rasmussen, Fuchs, Higgerson, Locatelli, Duran and a few more aggressive riders, then the peloton still chasing furiously behind them all.

At last! Finally a breakaway comes together with 135km left go to. Libert, Murgoitio, Montenegro, Fuchs, Kannemeyer, Le Bon, Rasmussen, Cassidy, Duran, Higgerson, Malori, Jarc and Locatelli made the cut.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic2.png

And a similar point in the peloton, Vorganov attacks. Diggle, El Fares and Zaini follow.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic3.png

The lead group swells to a total of 17 guys with the four joining after a 25km chase. 105km to go if you hadn't caught on (Waghlon especially).

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic4.png

It's not just four mad men, now Lobato, Evans and Bernucci attack from the peloton

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic5.png

Although that attack didn't 'quite' work out, the gap to the break did fall. Now down to 2 minutes, Evans attacked again with Mayo. After a long chase, they get across with 60km to go.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic6.png

Pressing on over the top of a rather brutal climb, the break breaks apart (get it? get it? I made me a joke!). A lot of the break are caught, and only 6 men are left out front with a minutes gap. There is El Fares, Murgitio, Montenegro, Mayo, Kannemeyer and Evans.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic7.png

A few of the usual go-no-where attacks in the peloton on the next climb see more guys shelled out the back of the diminishing peloton, whilst, up front the group spits out Murgitio and Kannemeyer.

The lead four still have 1 minute 30 with 38km to go.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic8.png

Now, with 30km to go, the peloton is all compacto! The four couldn't hang out there any longer.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic9.png

A brief attack by Ponzi went nowhere, and it isn't until Gil and Efimkin attack that we see riders getting away from the peloton.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic10.png

Behind them Proni, Ponzi, Cobo and Craven follow the move.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic11.png

A rather late attack by Nocentini, and Craven failing to follow means we have 6 guys back in front with 20km left and a 1 minute 10 second gap. Craven is in the middle.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic12.png

Now with 9km left to go after 11km of descending, the group is still one minute ahead of the peloton.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic13.png

A few late attacks from the peloton by Roux, Ventoso and Claeys could spoil the 7th place grasping Craven.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic14.png

So, with 1.8km left to go, it's anyones guess who'll win this race out of the top 6 blokes.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic15.png

One kilometer left and Cobo is leading over Efimkin.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic16.png

Now with 300m to go, it looks all wrapped up!

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic17.png

It seems it was all too easy for the man who wouldn't stop working. Whereas the best sprinter in the group (by 12 points) who failed to do one single turn on the front, paid for his bad positioning.

i944.photobucket.com/albums/ad282/PCMDailyCleaverManGame/Pic18.png

Roux leads hooe Ventoso and the second group, with the peloton just behind them
