Euskaltel Euskadi 2010 - Team Presentation
Early this morning the direction of the Euskaltelteam announced a change in management. Danish manager Mads Mouritzen will step in as acting manager of the team. They did not disclose any further details about the administrative reasoning. The new manager took the stage and proceeded to announce his plans for the coming season.
First and foremost - 3 new cosponsors have been signed. We've tried to get some deals that will show off our sponsors in a good way in the races relevant to them.
This makes our seasongoals come out like this:
Our main goal of the season is undoubtedly the Tour de France. Our sponsors are very focused on this, and we'll be dedicating ourselves to making it happen.
We'll also be looking to the Vuelta and the Pais Vasco & Catalunya as key goals. More on the details in the key-rider presentation below.
The Riders:
Samuel Sanchez - Our captain. Samuel Sanchez has all the right stuff to compete for victories in both GT's and classics. This year however, with both the Catalunya and Pais Vasco so important to our sponsors - he will have to give the Ardennes a pass to be in top shape for the tour. Samuel will be leading us in the Catalunya and Tour de France. We would've loved to have him in the Pais Vasco, as it actually suits him better, and has a longer TT - however - taking training/fatigue for the Tour into consideration, the Catalunya is the better option.
Igor Anton - Our co-captain - Igor is so talented. He'll be in charge of getting us the results we need in the Pais Vasco, The Tour de Romandie and last but not least, the Vuelta Espana. We would've liked to have him with us in the Tour, but again, we're being carefull to watch our training/fatigue. Also, with less fitnesstraining comes more progress - and Igor could very well evolve even more.
Benat Intxausti - This young man is one of the most interesting prospects on our team. Benat is allready a decent stageraces, and will prove invaluable to Sanchez in the tour. Benat will also be given the role of captain when we go to the Giro d'Ialia.
Koldo Fernandez is going to be under pressure this year. He needs to earn his pay and earn us some victories throuhout the season - with our two big stars not risking their trainingschedules, we'll be looking to him for results to keep fans and sponsors happy. He'll be trying to peak for both the Tour and Vuelta.
Aitor Galdos will be tasked with the same job as Koldo Fernandez - and will be active throughout the season. But because Aitor is such a durable sprinter, he'll also be training for the tour.
Egoi Martinez will be supporting our captains in the GT's - he's solid - and given the chance, a polkadot a two might be in the cards for him.
Mikel Nieve - This young man will be training hard and looking to improve as much as he can. He will be riding in the Giro to support Intxausti and if he's up for it, the Vuelta.
Romain Sicard - Another young talent that we have high hopes for - the only foreigner in the team. Will also focus on development. But since he is such a talent, and french - he will ride the tour.
Jonathan Castoviejo - Another youngling lookuing to improve - will ride the Giro and Possibly the Vuelta.
These are our most notable riders this year. And we're hoping they'll do well all around. Next up are our race schedules for January and Fabruary and the results from the Australian Championships |

My exports are super wonky - sometimes it does it, sometimes it dont - sometimes it adds the totals together, sometimes it doesn't. What i'm going to do is revert to what i did in '08, and just give you the final standings of the rces i sim. |

Vuelta a la Región de Murcia - Stage 1
A small spanish stagerace to get things started for Sanchez. He'll also ride the Tirreno in his bid to get ready for the Catalunya. This race also suits him fine, a small mountain close to the finish on the 3rd stage, and a 22km timetrail on the 4th. Also Galdos is in good shape so this should be right up his Alley.

We join the action at 94km out. 3 riders are out today, our own Oablo Urtasan is accompanied by Miguel Ángel Candil of LA Rota dos Móveis & Luis Pinheiro from Madeinox - Boavista. Urtasan takes the first set of KOM points.
2nd KOM, Urtasan takes the top spot again and is beginning to see red dots. Gap is still growing.
3rd KOM and suddenly Candil decides he wants in on the action. Urtasan manages 2nd. In the peleton, Cofidis and The Shack are working to bring down the gap.
And they're doing a good job of it. With 23km to go the gap has been reduced to 1'40. Urtasan is throwing in the towel for today.
15km out and it's about to end for all of the attackers. We're going to see a sprint today.
10km out. Galdos finds the wheel of Vicioso, which seems like a fair bet for today. Galdos does not have a leadout with him in this race. This is mostly because it isn't a huge priority...but also because we really don't have leadoutmen on our team
3000, here we go! Muravyev sweeps by on the right, Vaitkus on his wheel. Vicioso and Galdos are fighting for his wheel.
But out of nowhere it's Francisco José Pacheco(XAG) and Dennis Van Winden(RAB) who go first. Vaitkus reacts! Galdos and VVicioso are neck and neck!
Vicioso can't finish it! It's Vaitkus or Galdos!
Aitor Galdos! He inched him out on the line, photofinish! First win of 2010 in the bag!

Vuelta a la Región de Murcia - Stage 2
Two big lumps on the road today. This is probably too much for Urtasan, so we worked a little in the beginning of the stage to keep the breakaways at bay. We then sent Martinez out on a raid - 32 KOM points out there today. Definately worth our while. He was joined by 5 riders in his attack - but should be able to come out on top as there were no climbers there.
At the first KOM only 2 men were hanging on. Fabio Felline(Footon - Servetto) & Ricardo Vilela(Madeinox - Boavista) - Martinez took 16pts on the first KOM.
Coming up on the climb again, with 60km to go - scattered attacks started and we were getting reeled in. Unwanted company i might add
Several riders manage to bridge the gap - Martinez takes off on his own. If we're to be sure of these points we have to get seperation. 6.4km to the gate.
Only 1 man manages to latch onto us. MArtinez seems the stronger climber of the riders out in front, but Felline is not giving up.
Luckily he either will or cannot take the points, and Martinez can sit back and watch the rest of the proceedings.
Urtasun is feeling his breakaway yesterday. He's been dropped on the climb. Martinez was the right horse today.
15km to the line and the remaining attackers will have to accept defeat. The peleton is charging them down.
7.5km - Galdos is positioning himself. His captain helps out in bringing him forward - Vicioso is just a few positions behind.
But again Radioshack shoots to the front. Muravyev leading out Vaitkus. Galdos sees them and latches on. 3400m.
2700m, here we go - perfectly placed!
But it's gone wrong! Van Winden(RAB) shoves Galdos out of the line as the sprint comes to the bottom of a small descent! Galdos has no choice but to give it all he's got from out far!
600m - Galdos in front, but Vaitkus has shot out from his launchers wheel and is coming fast!
But Galdos hangs on, and we're 2 for 2 in the Vuelta a la Región de Murcia. Perfect Galdos.
Egoi Martinez seems to enjoy his teammates win just as much as he did.
