Rund um Köln
mb2612
Welcome to RUnd um Koln

This race is blessed with top quality riders this year with Frank Schleck, Hagen, Trofimov, Sinkewitz and Sanchez Gonzalez all positioned for glory, in fact defending champion Sanchez Gil is barely getting a look in in the pre race build up

Off we go
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0001.jpg

And we have a break of ten: Minard, Reimer, Di Gregorio, Leezer, De Winde, Martin, Eastman, Wielinga, Stundzia and Duque
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0002.jpg
Steurs would later join them

Trouble for Festina as Ulissi punctures
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0003.jpg

And showing what could be called either bad sportsmanship or the killer instinct, Vesuvio, B&O and Sony all start ramping up the tempo
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0004.jpg

With 70km to go Wiggle decide to attack the fast moving peleton, Parvarin going off the front, behind Ulissi has kept the gap at roughly two minutes for the last 30km after his team mate had to drop off
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0005.jpg
Soon after Ulissi starts to let the gap slip out as he begins to run out of energy

This pace drops although the peleton still catches Parvarin with 40km to go, the break has only 2 minutes
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0006.jpg

25km to go and Hagen attacks
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0007.jpg

Weening, Casar and Baugnies try to give chase but don't go anywhere
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0009.jpg

Sinkewitz goes and again Weening and Casar follow
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0010.jpg

As do Riber-Sellebjerg and Petrie-Armstrong
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0011.jpg

The attackers hover 30 seconds off the peleton as Van Garderen goes with Mehr-Wenige
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0012.jpg

Under 10km to go and the breakaway riders attack one another: Reimer, Duque, Eastman and Leezer all going for it
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0013.jpg

While the attackers from the peleton catch the other breakaway riders, well Van Garderen, Casar, Mehr-Wenige and Weening do
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0015.jpg

Petrie-Armstrong is next just behind
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0016.jpg

While the peleton, still lead by Sony and Vesuvio, is next 58" behind the lead 4, although as you can see, everything is still tight.
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0019.jpg

Mehr-Wenige and Weening keep going and catch Leezer Reimer and Duque, Eastman having dropped back to help Van Garderen
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0020.jpg

Back in the peleton Bakelants, Sinkewitz, Hagen and Trofimov all attack as half the break is cuaght, have they left it too late though?
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0021.jpg

5km to go and we have a front group of 7 as Eastman and Van Garderen make it up
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0022.jpg

3.5 left and Hagen, Trofimov and Sinkewitz join them, this is going to be a 10 man sprint.
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0023.jpg

2.5km and Hagen is moving up, he has Weening leading out Mehr-Wenige just in front of him, while further ahead Duque annd Reimer are in Leezer's wheel. Will Hagen have the speed?
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0024.jpg

1.5km and Hagen has burst into the lead, Trofimov is trying to chase him down
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0025.jpg

1km to go and Hagen is clear, although Trofimov, Duque, and Reimer are neck and neck for 2nd
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0027.jpg

500 meters to go and Hagen is starting too fade, Duque is leading the charge back at him
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0028.jpg

300m to go and Duque is almost upon him
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0029.jpg

And Duque takes it, what a sprint from a man who had been in the break all day
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0030.jpg
Trofimov is 2nd, Reimer sneaks 3rd in front of Hagen while Mehr-Wenige takes a good 5th

Leezer holds onto 6th ahead of Bakelants and Weening whil Sinkewitz takes 9th, Schleck coming in 10th
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0031.jpg

Van Garderen gets 11th, Eastman Boom and Mori also came in ahead of the peleton
i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad301/mb2612/koln/PCM0032.jpg

However the big story is, despite chasing for over 110km the peleton couldn't catch the break and Duque sprinted his way to his biggest ever victory.
