You don`t have to open them. Just copy them to .../data/dem in the mainfolder.
Then you create a .gps route with bikemap.net, bikeroutetoaster.com or similar pages.
Then you create a new map with the stage editor and choose "from .gps/kml".
If you have a .dem file for this part of the world, the area around your route will be created automatically. |

I think you're mixing it up here.
.dem files are information about the terrain in which the route takes place. .gpx files are information about the route. |

When i made a route on bikemap it gave the option of GPX or kml so I was just making sure it would work to load into the stage editor |

Cyanide makes them - and no, there will be no .dem files for the rest of Norway. It's impossible to make them properly due to Norway being too far away from Equator. |

Any idea how exactly those .dem files are made?
I tried to convert srtm data from CGIAR (which is obviously the same source Cyanide is using) to .dem with 3dem, but in the stage editor it's not working.
I want to make a (fantasy) tour of the Canary Islands, and I guess Cyanide will not provide any .dem files for that area, that's why I want to know. |

Perhaps you could try to PM freire on the Cyanide forum, he will now for sure if you get an answer.

Does that play a role in a stage editor? |

Absolutely none. I've heard of a few theories, but none have worked so far. |
