got into a discussion with someone who was claiming that Afrikaans was an ethnic group in South Africa.

i said i believed that it was instead the language used by a certain ethnic group (Afrikaners)

who is right?

yeah you are basically right, although the term Afrikaans is probably the same as English in that it can be used to describe both a language and an ethnic group.

cheers guys.

already used wikipedia and even quoted the oxford english dictionary but he still wouldn't except it.

just thought if i had the word of a south african then he couldn't really argue:lol:

Yea its a language, here is an example of an Afrikaans conversation.

Person 1: Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Person 2: Bzzzz?
Person 1: Bzzzz. Bzzzzz.
Person 2: Got the pollen lets go.
