For years now I have wondered about the timings and been perflexed that so many riders can be, for example +20, is that because if you are classed in a group, like the peleton, you get credited with the same time as the bloke that passes the line first? |

You can change this.
There are 3 different options. 20sec, what means that after a group the next rider has 20 sec to reach the finish line otherwise he will be counted as a other group with the real time he has.
On hilly stages it`s often 10sec, so a long pelonton might have different times.
For mountains it`S normally set to 7 sek. So every single gap between the riders will be counted.
So in the peloton without big gaps, no matter if flat or mountain, there is always a rider who is under that times, so it`s counted as one group.

In RL it depends on the officials

You can change it with the Hannes Converter. Open your Savegame and then the table STA_Stage. Find the line gene_f_time_gap.
YOu can add whatever you want. There are also some 5, 15 sec.
But 7sec for mountain is enough. Otherwise there will be time gaps between two riders, who cross the line almost together. So I wouldn`t go to deep.
And 20sec is enough for flat races. Wouldn`t go higher.

Well stone me!!!, so you can win the Tour by pootling along at the front of Peleton!, Is this generally accepted as the best way to score it IRL, as its not F1 is it!!! |

So if I break out for the finish and win by 19 seconds, the bloke in second gets my time!!! |

Exactly. But normally this won`t happen. If you change it to 7 sec, then even the peloton will be splitted in several times. And this is not realistic at all. In real the peloton is counted with the same time.
And 20 sec are quit fast ingame.

In this game and in flat stages, the gap has to be bigger then 20 sec.
In real life the officials have to decide if there was a gap or not.

For clarification purposes, the 20 second gap refers to "in-game" time, rather than real-life time, and "in-game" time passes much quicker!
edit - sorry roturn, I've just noticed that you said exactly the same thing as me!

so how did i get a +2 seconds on frank schleck an a mountain stage once (2010 TDF on a PCM09)?
in my experience, 1 Real life second is about 10seconds ingame.... which is why it take ~30mins per stage when played at x1 |

If you played with the PCM.daily DB, it can be explained by the fact that we lowered the time gap to 4 for mountain stages, making smaller gaps possible. |
