Can I ask why the PCM-scene uses WinRar over 7Zip to compress DBs etc? 7Zip compress to a lot smaler size than WinRar. And that saves everyone for time and bandwidth. 7Zip-files can also be read by WinRar.

The 1996 DB for PCM10 could have been 55 mb if you had compressed it with 7-zip and ultra settings. That's half the size of the package now. The Correct Jerseys package could have been only 18 mb (!) compared to 68 mb now.
7-Zip is free, open source and can as Johan92 says can be extracted with WinRar. There are only positive sides of you ask me.

And there's no disadvantages if you compress it with the 7Zip?
I mean - is there a chance that the computer will make some mistakes because of the small size? |

No. It's the same thing, but compress to a lot smaller size. The PCMNorge 98Db was also compressed with 7Zip, under 75 mb was that package.

The general "scene" uses Winrar. I always used Winrar since I needed to compress a file for the first time, and I believe the same happens with lot of people.

The compression algorithm in 7-Zip works much better on files that PCM uses much (TGA for instance) than WinRar. I don't know if people here use maximum compression in WinRar, but 7-Zip should be a lot better anyways. After all it's not the filesize of the DB that decides how good it is. |

Yeah, i'm not the person who upload files in those dimensions but it would be nice if databases like Daily's could be compressed to sizes like that.
Less downloading time |

Marco: Yes, but 7Zip does exactly the same as WinRar, but compress to a smaller size. Saves everyone for time and bandwidth.
EDIT: As Rauling says, if Daily use 7Zip we could download the DB on half the time.

I don't mind using 7Zip in the future.
The reason why I'm using WinRAR is simply that that's the standard program I've used for compression/decompression pretty much ever since I got my first computer (in 1994 - WinRAR was released in 93 ). |
