The third stage in Mount Hood is again a criterium, but this time it's a mountain one, around the Cooper Mountain. On paper Alarcon is the main favorite, but other rider such as Abal and Perez Sanchez also have their chances, with the stage winner most likely to be the new leader of the race as well
At the first pass of the categorized climb, 5 riders were in the breakaway: Van Hummel, Brolin, Wyss, Rollin and Jelloul. Wyss was first at the top and he became the first virtual leader of the KoM competition
At the second pass, only 4 riders were in front, Rollin being dropped off on the first pass of the Cooper Mountain. Jelloul was first at the top, in front of Brolin and Wyss
Wyss was again first at the next pass, in front of Brolin and Jelloul, while his team - mate, Van Hummel was about to be left behind
At the top of the Cooper Mountain, Wyss attacked and took the race on his own into the final lap as the other escapes were able to follow him
He was first at the fourth pass on the categorized climb, which brought him the first King of the Mountains jersey of the race. He had an advantage of over a minute in front of the pack there, while the other escapes were already caught
On the final climb to the Cooper Mountain, he was caught 4 kilometers before the top by 2 attackers from the pack: Montenegro and Perez Sanchez
They were both clearly stronger than Wyss and the left the Swiss rider behind, but the pack with the other favorites ready to make their moves wasn't too far away
Perez Sanchez was caught by a favorites group, led by Alarcon and Abal, right before the final kilometer, while Montenegro still held a slightly advantage
Alarcon was the strongest from the attacking group and inside the last kilometer he caught Montenegro, while behind them the others were fighting for the third place
Montenegro fight well but Alarcon was way stronger than him and the Ikea rider took the lead right before the finish line
Alarcon takes the win in the most important stage so far and with a good time from Ikea in the tomorrow's TTT he is the big favorite to win Mount Hood this year
Montenegro took the second place, 25 seconds behind Alarcon. Lloret finished third, 34 seconds behind the winner, while a group with Rohregger, Augustyn, Peterson, Raisin, Eltink, Seeldraeyers and Abal lost 10 seconds more. Perez Sanchez, who went away with Montenegro at the start of the climb lost 1 minute and 19 seconds, while the pace came after 1 minute and 34 seconds
Vaitkus had no chance in today's stage and after losing more than 11 minutes on the four passes of the Cooper Mountain he gave the yellow jersey to Jose Alarcon, who is dominating the race at the moment
