So here's the pivotal likely-to-change-the-GC stage, but will it live up to the hype given to it in the pre-race media? Certainly riders like Ponzi, Froome and Kolobnev would hope so, but again the risk of a break making it to the finish first is always there.
A really flat finale could well see a large bunch coming into the final kilometers, but it could, just as easily, go the other way and be split to pieces, who knows!
Our break of the day (to fast forward a little bit) is Landaluze, Nydam, Sijmens, Van Poppel, Capecchi, and Balloni. Behind the break are Lefevre and Passalacqua, who are both too crap to actually get across, and also tactically sterile as they attacked once the break had a gap of 1 minute 30.
Landaluze is the only rider to attack for the KoM and takes it easy peasy over Sijmens and Capecchi.
Appleby, Paolini and Perget try a nice suicidal move with 70km to go, and a peloton in full flight chasing the break.
A downhilling duo-supreme of Chiaffredo Grippo and Paolo Scarponi soon put paid to that move, as Wiggle and Tinkoff both chase down the breaks for today.
And as the breaks gap falls down to just one minute, on the second KoM prime no less, the attacks come from the peloton first. Led by Mandri, Vorganov, with Petrov following, it's anyones guess as to whether they are just KoM attacks, or full out race-winning moves!
Regardless, they can't stop Landaluze from taking the 2nd KoM prime over Capecchi and Sijmens.
Oh, and what's this? Kolobnev is off again! Leaving it till later on the climb than others, means he can attack over the top and get the gap like yesterdays stage. He literally floats past the break and all previous attackers like they are standing still.
After all the attacks (mainly for the KoM I presume), and the attacks following Kolobnev's move, only Aleksandr managed to get a gap. Things are looking good for his GC lead here! And out of the break of the day, only Sijmens could follow his pace and get on his wheel.
But, as soon as we hit the bottom of the final climb, Pasamontes has had enough of waiting around for Wiggle to bring things back. He's off!
Rovny, Ventoso, M.Lloyd and Cherel all try to follow Luis' move.
But as we're under 18km to go, it is now officially mayhem on the road! We've got Kolobnev leading things still, with Sijmens in his wheel.
Cherel, Lloyd (of the Matt variety), Ventoso and Rovny are behind the leading duo. Behind them are a passed Pasamontes, with Bernucci, Ponzi, Vorganov, Salerno and Proni.
So it all comes together in one big happy 17 man group just in time for the 10km to go banner.
Gasparotto, and Impey have both attacked too from the peloton.
So, with 5km to go, it certainly doesn't look like the puncheurs have managed to shake off the sprinters. Impey, Gasparotto and Ventoso all have to be the favourites right now!
But hold the horses back! With just a shade over 3km to ride, Gasparotto doesn't want to leave this down to a sprint! After taking his time getting across to the move, he's now attacked on the outside, and he's pulling out a gap!
But, he's just gone far too early. As his attack fades and turns into a half-hearted sprint, it's clear to see he's going backwards. Even Salerno is gaining on him with poor sprinting ability.
And with 700m left to ride, Salerno is past. Ponzi is gaining fast, Kolobnev too! Ventoso, just off screen, is left behind a little to start with, but is certainly out in the open and steaming up to the back wheels of the leading riders.
Now just 300m to go! Can Salerno be a complete surprise winner of a stage here today?
But no, a picture tells a thousand stories, but this one tells us only one - Ponzi has won a stage!
A strange path through Cristiano seemed impossible, but somehow Simone found a way underneath his handlebars, and between his thighs to clinch the win on the line. Aleksandr takes a fine 3rd to possibly cement the overall win?
