You gotta play montain stages. There won't be mass sprint for sure!
Other than that - it's just a question of luck

It doesn't happen to often. I guess the more riders you send the better but also try breaking from later on in the stage. Anyway, i believe they are working on it for future games. But i don't know for sure, my style of racing is fast forward to the finish and race from there because i have given up on breakaways |

Really depends on the race , for ex giro stage 18 a hilly one probably like in real life the peleton will let the break win and the gc canditates battle it in the back , it really depends on the situation , for one day races the break is a no brainer

You can also play all the stages with an hill some kilometers before the finish, and if the breakaway has still at least some seconds on the peloton, you can try to attack just in the end of the hill, you push hard in the downhill and try to resist.
I won some flat/hilly stages like that, sometimes just caught by the bunch just on the line |

Just wait for PCM2010
I had maybe in 1% of my races a succesful breakaway. They want to make it better in next PCM. So I hope they are right.
In Pcm09 it`s nearly impossible in one day races or short tours. There are a few opportunities during a long GT or a very weak tour like Langkawi, San Luis...

True. In one of the previews, Cyanide said that they had worked a lot on this. |

Attacking downhill always works, is like the IA does not follow you,
it is a kind of cheating |

They follow me when they can... I mean the leaders attack in downhill, so I don't really see where is the cheating. Even if they don't follow you, when you are in the end of the downhill you have no more juice to attack anymore while they still can, so really, I don't understand why you consider that cheating.
And I said I attack in the end of the hill, not when it goes down, and then, you can't say it's cheating anymore because AI attacks often when the percentages are weaker in the end of an ascencion. |

In PCM08 it was very easy to attack downhill because your rider did not lose any energy. Some people did not realize that the energy calculation and the AI did change.
In PCM09 you might get lucky in a downhill attack but you could also blow your rider. Even only 4 followers can close a gap rather quickly if your rider has no yellow and/or red energy.
Sometimes I attack downhill if there is a small group ahead but you have to be carefull. If the gap is to big your rider will lose all energy. The following AI riders will save energy and are able to catch up rather quickly as it gets flat and when they reached your rider, he might be able to follow but has no chances on the final sprint.
Of course this is not valid for a top rider like contador or cancellara, but you should not have any problems to make the gap on the way up or on the flat so you don't have to use downhill attacks anyway. |

I manage to win quite a lot of breakaways in hilly with a good descender taking big relays when it goes downhill : manage to keep time in front of the peleton... (not attacking just taking a good relay )
I win the GP la Marseillaise every year in a Breakaway
Team Europcar !!
