The third stage in Paris – Nice is also made for sprinters. Renshaw, Haussler and Duque finished on the podium yesterday and they are the main favorites today, but Van Stayen and Meyer are definitely looking for the revenge
Eight riders were in the main breakaway today: Deignan, Deroo, Vital, Bret, Lund, Kvist, Txurruka, Flens. The last 2 were in the yesterday’s breakaway as well, Flens being now 4th in the GC, while Txurruka is there to defend the polka dot jersey
Being the strongest sprinter in the group helped Kxvist win the first intermediate sprint of the day. He was followed by Deroo and Txurruka
On the first climb of the day Txurruka attacked and took the most KoM points, in front of Vital and Deroo. The YTT rider seems now the main favorite to win the polka dot jersey even though the hard stages haven’t arrived yet
Txurruka was also first at the top of the second climb of the day, this time being followed by Flens and Bret
After Gesink and Pluchkin yesterday, today it was Coppel’s time to puncture. Two of his team – mates, Kern and Le Mevel, waited for him and brought him back in the pack on the last climb of the day
Just like yesterday, Txurruka attacked too late on the last climb and he was only second at the top, after Deroo but in front of Vital
At the last intermediate sprint of the day most of the escapes were already caught, with Deroo, Deignan, Flens and Bret being the last survivors. The Domina Vacanze rider won the sprint, while Flens failed to achieve any bonification seconds, which would have brought him in theory the second place in the GC
Deroo was also the last rider to be caught, right before the 5 kilometers banner. With the sprint approaching, 2 trains managed to get away from the pack. Kavsek was again leading the Starbucks train for Renshaw, with Duque right behind them, while the Festina duo, with Bernaudeau and Sonnery was trying to keep it up
But with just 2.5 kilometers before the finish, Bernaudeau started losing speed and the Starbucks got away from the Festina one
With the Starbucks train going away it was going to be between Renshaw and Duque for today’s stage, while behind them, Sonnery was trying to get the third place now
Inside the final kilometer, Duque made his move and took the lead from Renshaw, who will most likely not complete his double
And it’s Duque who wins the third stage, after following the right wheels in the sprint. Renshaw takes the second place but secures the greens jersey, while Sonnery brought a third place for France and Festina. Again Coppel was one of the fastest riders in the sprint, finishing 11th and kept his yellow jersey but tomorrow’s the first important stage in this year’s Paris - Nice
