The fifth stage in San Luis is the last stage that could make any significant changes in the GC. The finish seems to suit Serpa as he’s the strongest pure climb but Taaramae who won the stage last year and Florentino Marquez, the winner of the previous mountain finish and former leader of the race, could threat his yellow jersey
Four riders got away from the pack today. At the first intermediate sprint of the day, Seledkov was in front in a solo lead
Almost one minute behind him, Hoste, Sambris and Bochman were his chasers but even though they were three they never looked like going to catch Seledkov
At the top of the first climb of the day, Seledkov was still leading the race, this time with an even bigger gap in front of his chasers
Behind him were made some changes as Sambris was hardly keeping up with Bochman, while Hoste was already history
Valjavec and Zubeldia attacked from the pack on the climb and even though they got quite easily an 1 minute gap they were both caught on the downhill
Seledkov also took the second intermediate sprint but we will have to see how long he will be able to maintain himself in the first position after riding almost the entire stage all by himself
He started the final climb of the day with an advantage of 2 minutes and a half over the pack but before the 10 kilometers banner he was caught by Taaramae, who had attacked at the bottom of the climb
Soon Taaramae dropped him off and head to the KoM check point placed halfway on the final climb
Seledkov was gone and he was followed at 30 seconds by Serpa and De Greef, who had a slightly advantage over the pack
But neither of them was able to catch Taaramae. It was Marquez who attacked from the pack and joined Taaramae in front with just 3 kilometers until the finish
Serpa tried to join them in front but he barely maintained himself in front of the pack in the final kilometers of the climb
Meanwhile, Taaramae and Marquez were preparing for the sprint, with the Estonian leading as they were heading into the final kilometer
Marquez was faster in the final meters of the climb but Taaramae hanged on and took the stage win. This could be an amazing day for him as he secured the lead in the points and youth rankings, took the lead in the KoM classification and he might take the yellow jersey as well
Augustyn took the third place in front of Kohl, 44 seconds behind the leading duo, while Lloret finished 5th, 56 behind the winner
Serpa led the pack, 1 minute and 4 seconds behind Taaramae but that’s not enough for him to keep the yellow jersey as he even loses the second spot to Marquez and Taaramae becomes the new leader of the race
