AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Buninyong - Buninyong
163 km
10/01
165 km: Several riders leave the pack early. It is going to be a difficult race and a head start is the only way to win the race for the riders with less climbing stats than Evans, Rogers and Gerrans. Sutton, Clarke, King, Porte, Howard and Latham manage to break away.
150 km. Lowe, Hansen, Stevenson, Cantwell, Clarke and Hayman have made the jump to the leading group, which has a 1’13” lead on the pack. A little later also Gerrans, Brooke and Rolfe make the jump. This is for the Garmin riders the sign to close the gap.
130 km: Another group got away from the pack and is trying to take the win by means of a long breakaway. Cooke, Latham, King, Clarke, Lowe, Cantwell, Stevenson, Clarke, Howard, Brooks and Hayman take a 1’42” lead on the pack. However, also their breakaway does not last long.
90 km: Sunderland, Davis, Day and Porte form the third breakaway of the day.
35 km: The breakaway has only a marginal lead of 1’02” on the pack. For Porte it has become too much. He couldn’t keep up with his fellow attackes anymore and dropped back into the pack.
17 km: Gerrans, O’Grady, Sulzberger, Davis and Menzies attack. They are 1’51” behind the leaders. It is going to be very difficult to catch up with them. Evans, Rogers and Bobridge join in the attack a little later. In the front Alan Davis has dropped from the leading group. Sunderland and Day are alone now.
10 km: Gerrans made the jump to the leaders. Evans and O’Grady tried to follow him, but failed.
0 km: Day wins the sprint before Gerrans and Sunderland!

PREVIEW ON SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER
The Tour Down Under typically is a sprinters tour. It is not uncommon that all stages end up in mass sprints. Consequently, most team brought several sprinters to Australia. Besides sprinters one does need to have riders in the breakaways. Cause if they last to the finish, you better have a guy in there, because most likely there won't be a second chance.

TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 1: Clare - Tanunda
140 km
19/1
100 km: A group with Reimer, Rosseler, Marycz and Marzoli has escaped from the pack and taken a 4’01” lead at the first intermediate sprint, which was won by Marycz before Reimer and Rosseler. They were followed by a second group with Le Lay, Dean and De Lis at 31” and a third group with Gavazzi, Mata, Cretskens, Mate and Roux at 1’14”. Ravard and Bobridge are behind the pack due to punctures.
66 km: Reimer takes the second intermediate sprint before Marycz, Marzoli and Rossler. They now have a 40” lead on the second group with Cretskens, Dean, De Lis, Le Lay, Mate, Mata, Gavazzi and Roux and a 3’58” lead on the pack. Ravard and Bobridge are still behind. Both leading groups would combine a little later.
28 km: Marzoli won the sprint on Menglers Hill and is now leading the mountain standings. Moreau has managed to make the jump from the pack which is only 33” behind, but did not have sufficient stamina to participate in the sprint for the mountain classification. Also Sabatini and Mouris tried to make the jump. In the downhill of Menglers Hill Dean, LeLay, Marzoli, Roux and Gavazzi get away from the others who were caught by the pack. It wouldn’t bring them much as also they were caught a little later.
5 km: Voigt is leading the Saxo train, where Goss has manouvred himself between O'Grady and Cooke.
Devolder starts the sprint from very far and O'Grady sees his chance to grab his wheel.
And when he comes out of it nobody can take him anymore

45 km: Cameron Meyer is the first one to reach to top of Checker Hill. The leading group still has a 2’53” lead on the pack.
Despite there is no strong wind, the pack broke on the Checker Hill leaving seventeen riders of the Katusha, Astana and Saxo teams. Of the other teams only Barredo made it to the first group.
Despite the gap is small no riders from the second group have managed to make the jump or close the gap.

TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 3: Unley - Stirling
133 km
21/01
96 km: Today the pack does not let any breakaway go easily and one by one they are caught after a couple of kilometers. As part of a breakaway attempt Hunt takes the intermediate sprint in McLaren Flat before Bertolini and Vaugrenard.
93 km: Vaugrenard is the first one on top of Wickims Hill before Castroviejo, Bertolini, Honig, Kohler, Leezer and Roux. They only have a very small gap with the pack and it seems like they are not going to stay away for a long time.
64 km: Kohler takes the intermediate sprint before Castroviejo, Honig, Leezer, Renaud, Le Lay and Mate. They have a 2’23” lead on the pack.
15 km: Le Lay is the only one of the attackers who is still out there. The pack is approaching fast and a mass sprint seems evident.
The Saxo train managed to get a small gap with the pack and again O’Grady is set up in an excellent position
Pozzato is getting close fast, but the gap is too large. O’Grady takes his third victory in a row!

TOUR DOWN UNDER
Stage 4: Norwood - Goolwa
150 km
22/01
122 km: Vaugrenard is the first one to arrive on top of the Fox Creed Road – Lenswood and takes over the mountain jersey as a consequence. To do so he jumped away from the leading group with Codol, Millar, Coyot, Krivtsov, De Lis, Wyss, Urtasun, Tosatto, Mate and Roelandts. They have a 1’17” lead on the pack.
56 km: Hammond takes the intermediate sprint in Langhorne Creek before Sieberg and Downing. Together with many others they have made the jump from the pack to the leading group which now consists of 24 riders. The gap with the pack is maintained small by the Saxo Bank riders and currently is 2’29”.
38 km: Pietropolli takes the intermediate sprint in Milang before De Vocht and Sieberg. The gap with the pack has increased to 3’00”.
11 km: Vaugrenard has gotten away from the leading group as the pack is approaching fast. Mouris tries to follow him. But against the pack they do not have a change.
It is Bos who is starting the sprint from very far. One may wonder what he is thinking.
Geslin is getting in the lead from far with behind him the unleashed Columbia train.
It is Renshaw who is faster. Greipel and Goss were not able to pass there leadoutman. Still a very nice victory for Team HTC Columbia!
