This past week I was reading cyclingnews, and stumbled upon a Q&A with Johnathon Vaughters discussing his new Tour selection proposal. Without going into details, he outlined some very good ideas. This however is not what my concept is about. Vaughters at one point states:
"Having teams and team brands remain stable helps develop a long term fan base, just as you have in baseball or football. Players come and go, but folks are still Yankees fans. We are missing that in cycling and it limits our progress, de-stabilises athletes, and puts us at greater risk for various problems."
This comparison of cycling, a non-league/association sport, to something like Major League Baseball seemed interesting to me. Although very impractical, I imagined track cycling teams based out of a city with team nicknames much like a normal American sports league. Maybe the "LA Flash" could someday compete out of the Home Depot Center and race the "Indianapolis Cutters". I decided a novel idea like this could only work in a fantasy setting and PCM may be the place for it.
Now I know this may not be an intuitive idea to many of the European users of PCMdaily, but for us Americans I think it might be pretty interesting. If this concept were to become a full blow DB, I would need a few shirt designers (I would supply logos), as well as nickname ideas for teams in maybe 8-12 cities (Most velos here are shit ). There would also be a fantasy selection of real riders from around the world (imagine Grégory Baugé being a celebrity in Trexlertown, PA). In reality this wouldn't be anything special unless an online aspect came out of it. It would just be re-branding and replacing riders. That said, I know there will be some interest in it among US and some UK users and I would like to know your opinions. Feel free to comment/criticize, or if you really want to be part of the "project" shoot me a PM.
Thanks,
Matt

What I am proposing is totally new teams not sponsored by already existing clubs.
