Hi
I've just upgraded from 08 to 09. Just starting my season off but I keep getting the problem that my riders run out of yellow bar and drop behind the peloton.
Usually in 08 when I start a stage I protect my main rider or more than one if I have a sprinter or 2 riders in top 10. In 09 I find that half way through the stage my riders who I have protecting the main rider run out of energy. This never happened in 08 and wondered if I am doing something wrong like I should only protect in the last part of a stage |

Yes, protect them in the last part of the race. You don't lose so much energy before the P sets up the pace |

thanks for the info. Bit different to 08 then will have to do a bit of trial and error to work out best time. |

it's worthwhile having your leader protected by a weaker rider on your team throughout the stage, doesn't matter if a helper gets dropped after all that is his job look after your leader |

I only start to protect my SPRINTER shortly before the sprint. If a cyclist is riding in the peloton at normal pace he does not need to be protected.
You should consider helping your LEADER when it is going up but you cannot use the protection. You have to do it like they do it in RL. (Use the dot on your good climbers and set the % of your leader lower so that he follows your other riders) |

I usually protect 3 or 4 of my riders with the weakest guys. When those are used up, I use the weaker2 of the remaining 4 to protect the other 1 or 2 (depending on how close in ability they are and/or if either could win the race).
The bar goes down on weaker riders no matter if you use them to protect anyone or not. What helps is to keep them off the front. Have them close to the front, but not so they hit the wind first, i.e. have the guy protecting your leader behind in the 2nd/3rd row behind some other riders.
I have no idea what Lachi's talking about. That works if your leader is isolated, not if he's in the peleton and I don't really see the advantage of that over protecting him.

Yes, it is when he is isolated or if you want to isolate other riders.
If he is in the peloton when it is going up he has already lost the race. Of course you can also follow opponents. But if you set a rider to protect he will lose all his bar within 10 seconds or so. |

I use 3-2-3
3 weakest guys protect the 3 strongest, and for the 2 between 1 alternatively try to get in the breakaway, and the other one fetches water.
However, I haven't seen any significant effect of "protection" on my leader, except when riding in the wind (in front)
Goig up, using the dot is better than protecting, but some cpnsider the dot cheating... |

I can just protect with one rider on one rider? Is this normal? |

Yes because it was changed with PCM08, before you could protect one rider with 8 team riders

The dot is one of the commands you can issue. It's not the relay (a row of dots), but rather just one dot. It means that the rider will use the amount of energy you set with the bar vs. whatever energy is required to keep position (with the keep position command).
