Cafe de Colombia Press Release
Cafe de Colombia take great pleasure in unveiling our goals for the coming season. Our new backers are providing us with a large sum of money for the coming season - so large in fact that we think we can break into the Top 10 in the team standings for next year.
The team will be re-built with a Spanish/Latin American focus and it should surprise no one that we will look for our riders to deliver podium finishes at the Vuelta Espana, the Vuelta a Asturias and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.
We will aim for our last goal in the beautiful mountainous country of Switzerland where our riders will feel at home. There are nine stages in the Tour de Suisse and we hope to take a stage win in one of them.
Viva Cafe de Colombia!

Cafe de Colombia are delighted to announce the contract renewals of the following riders for next season:
Mark Cavendish, Philip Deignan, Linus Gerdemann, José Angel Gomez Marchante, Paul Healion, Sébastien Joly, Andreas Klöden, Christian Knees, Thomas Lövkvist, Francisco Mancebo, Óscar Pereiro Sio, Marco Pinotti, Vicente Reynès and Peter Velits.
However, as expected, contract renewal time at the team has also led to an exodus of 'talent' from the ranks of Cafe de Colombia. Leaving as a result of non-renewals or breakdowns in negotiations are:
Cyril Dessel, Sergi Lagutin, Julien Mazet , Urban Monks, Omloop Geert, Matthé Pronk, Luke Roberts, Andrei Sartasov, Jürgen Van de Walle, and Boy Van Poppel.
The team go into the transfer period with plenty of room left in the budget for at least one major acquisition and have a very open mind on any offers that come in for those who have renewed. |

It is with great pleasure that we announce the first signings in the rebuilding of the squad that avoided relegation on only the last day of the season a few short months ago.
Out goes the hero of that day - Thomas Lovkvist. He will be joining Philips - TDC along with Linus Gerdemenn. The team wish them well for the coming season. Moving from Phillips, to Colombia is Fabio Duarte. The young Colombian is already a very good man to have around in the moutains and the sponsors are keen to provide money to help this young man reach his full potential.
In other transfer news, another Colombian is joing the team. Alex Ardila Cano moves from Jack Wolfskin for a nominal fee. Another good climber, the team hopes he will be able to play more than a nominal role in the team next year.
They are the first South American signings in what the team and sponsors hope will be a gradual transformation of the squad. |

Avoiding relegation with a win in the final Pro Tour race of the Season and rising from the ashes of the Eurosport team, it is time to formally introduce the Café de Colombia team for the coming season.
The highest profile signing of the off season and a statement of the team's intent was undoubtedly the signing of World Champion Alejandro Valverde.
Winner of the Continental Tour last year, Valverde proved his class was undiminished with an epic victory in the World road race at the back end of last season.
Valverde beating the best of the best and becoming World Champion
Valverde will be looking to do well in the Ardennes this year and make up for his flop at LBL last season. Due to the presence of Gomez Marchante and Fabio Duarte, Valverde may see his racing schedule slightly favouring the hilly classics. However, he is specifically targetting team goals at the Vuelta a Asturias and the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, though management have yet to decide if he will ride the Vuelta Espana or the Tour de France. In any case, big things are expected of Don Alejandro.
José Angel Gomez Marchante is the other top quality stage racer in the team ranks. One of Spain's best climbers, he snatched a podium at the Vuelta Espana last year and a repeat this year would fulfil one of the team's goals for the year. That is, of course, if he rides the Vuelta. Indications from team management seem to suggest that as well as either the Tour or Vuelta, Gomez Marchante may well make an appearance at the Giro next year.

Moving from Phillips-TDC in the deal that saw Linus Gerdemann and Thomas Lövkvist go the other way, Fabio Duarte is arguably the strongest Colombian in the squad. There is money in reserve and it is understood that the sponsors may well have earmarked it to provide the funds for Fabio to spend the off season alternating between intensive training time in the wind tunnel and at altitude. He may even end up being the team leader for the moutain fest that is the Vuelta a Asturias. In any case, look for Duarte to deliver some good results next year for the team and vindicate the decision not to go after Rigoberto Uran.
Young American Danny Summerhill was another big signing made by the team. He has room to develop still further over the coming years but will immediately become the team's leader in the cobbled classics campaign. Frenchmen Sebastien Joly, who filled this role for the team last year is still around, and will be looking to repeat the decent results he had at the cobbled races last year, like the 14th he took at the Tour of Flanders. Management will be looking for Summerhill to do better. These two, along with Christian Knees are also the riders the team would most like to see feature in breaks at other races, and anything they are able to get in these situations would be a bonus.

Stepping into the void left by the departure of Mark Cavendish, is Jaime Alberto Castañeda. Largely anonymous for Nokia-Nike in the CT last year, it is a big ask of Castañeda to step up and fill the multiple-GT stage winner Cavendish's shoes - but again, management are hopeful that he can make a showing in some races and pick up points here and there. The Tour of Qatar will be a very early indication of how his season will go.
Best Time Trialist in the squad is the on loan Andrew Tennant, and while he is probably not going to win any, with his fighting spirit Café de Colombia would be slightly dissapointed not to see him feature in any race winning breaks over the course of the season.
The team are delighted to announce too that no fewer than 13 of the squad are from the Americas, including nine Colombians, and these numbers will no dount increase over the coming seasons as the team rebuilds itself into a Spanish speaking pan-American powerhouse.

Cafe de Colombia - Winners of the Vuelta a Espana
Alejandro Valverde did not come cheap when Cafe de Colombia made him their number 1 target in the transfer season, but team management can sit back now and reflect that the right decision was made. Earlier in the season Valverde delivered the first of the team's goals with a win at the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.
He was a little dissapointing in the Ardennes, but all of that was wiped away with a strongmans performance at the Vuelta.
The Vuelta hit the mountains for the first time on Stage 8 and despite the most aggressive performance of the day it was Rujano who stole the stage win. The rainbow bands were on show and notice of his form was served.
Stage 9 was a lumpy stage - Valverde led over the final hill and had the strength to hold off a charging Schleck on the line. He moved up to 3rd on GC, 48 seconds behind Beñat Intxausti with Yuri Trofimov sandwiched in between them.
Stage 12 saw the race return to the mountains. Schleck and Intxausti did their best to hurt him here, but into the final kilometer his finishing kick saw him chase down Rujano and take his second victory of the race. Only 9 seconds off the leaders jersey now.
Stage 13 and it was time for the Sierra Nevada. Valverde threw down the challenge again to Schleck and Intxausti. It was a ding dong battle, but Valverde was once again too strong for his closest rivals - stage win number 3. Intxausti's second place means he hangs on to the leaders jersey by just one second.
There was no let up on the mountains and Stage 14 ended with another big climb. It was not an easy one and Valverde is in a more defensive mood today as a group of the best 12 climbers in the race fight out the finale. Valverde is happy to get through his first bad day in the race without losing any time to Schleck or Intxausti.
Valverde hunts bonus seconds in the next flat stages but fails to come up with any. Stage 18 we are into the hills and Intxausti is still in the golden leaders jersey. It's the type of terrain the suits Alejandro. It's a hard day in the saddle - Intxausti falls as the pace is picking up. He never gets back on - Valverde doesn't attack and the celebrations are muted as he finally takes the race lead. Rujano is his closest challenger a minute and a half back, with Schleck at 2". Stage 19 and all Valverde needs to do is defend his jersey for this the final stage. Over the top of the final climb of the Vuelta, it is Valverde and Schleck side by side as Valverde secures the Mountains jersey.
It's not all he's going to get today either - stage win number four follows as Schleck once again loses out to the Spaniard.
He negotiates the TT and final flat stage of the race, and new sponsor Cafe de Colombia have a Grand Tour win in their first year in the sport. Alejandro Valverde honours the World Champions jersey and becomes the Vuelta a Espana champion and delivers a win goal to the team.

Cafe de Colombia - formed from the ashes of the Eurosport team - go into the close season about to embark on Part 2 of the rebuilding plan demanded by the sponsors. "This season, we were 60% Colombia and 40% Eurosport" the team manager told El Universal from off season base, Cartagena, "In the close season, I aim to finish reshaping the team. We are interested in Colombian, South American and Spanish speaking riders in that order. Danny Summerhill? He understands Spanish well and after a year on the team his Spanish is a lot better than before. We have to compete in the ProTour and when it comes to the guys who go over the pave, then we are forced to go after whoever is available. The same is true to a lesser extent with the puncheurs"
The journalist from El Universal pushed management to go into specifics on who would be staying and going. With cigar smoke wafting from the villa balcony the journalist was not dissappointed.
"I mentioned Danny Summerhill already. We want to keep him. Alejandro Valverde won us the Vuelta and we will talk to him and try to convince him to stay. He likes Colombia and has made friends in Medellin and Bogota who have showed him new things. Gomez Marchante - I think we made mistakes with his race schedule, he did not enjoy the Tour so much and had stomach problems too often - but we hope he will stay too and get closer to Valverde. Our Colombian and South American riders - Duarte, Ardila Cano, Orozco, Montoya, Rubiano Chavez, Sarmiento, Machado, Gallardo, RodrÃguez Parra, Arango, Vaquera and Castañeda we will look to keep hold off. Some of the Europeans say these are not ProTour riders - I say we are still here and were better this year than last. Talking of the Europeans - Alejandro would like us to keep Óscar Pereiro and Vicente Reynès - we will try to do this for him. Then there are the others. I have spoken to them already and Klöden, Deignan, Joly, Knees, Pinotti and Healion know they will need to find new teams for next season. We wish them well - they served the Colombian cause well.
We need new riders too and I have friends who tell me that Rigoberto Úran should be approached. They are not happy he stole the stage from the Colombian team at the Tour, but they are willing to forgive him and they tell me they know his family and where they are. What can I do? He had a good season, he is happy where he is. But if my friends tell me I must get him - then I have to try. They know my family too...and my family's family.......... Jose Serpa I think after his win earlier is another I may be told to try and get. My friends are not the kind of people it is wise to argue with."

Café de Colombia - Building For The Tour
Café de Colombia, pride of Colombia and South America's finest racing team have some big news to announce today. No one can forget how Alejandro Valverde fought his way tooth and nail to win the Vuelta last year. The team were delighted to capture a Grand Tour and the Spanish speaking world's biggest race in their first season as sponsor.
Next year, the team have decided that they will attempt to go one step further and take the Tour de France. The season will be focused on the French race and as a first step towards it, the team are delighted to announce that a legendary name will make its return to the peloton.
Peugot. One time sponsors of the most successful team in the Tour's history will supply Café de Colombia with racing frames in support of their return to the bike making business and this Colombian teams pursuit of ultimate racing glory.
The riders are on holiday at the moment so are not available to model the new gear, but Colombian artist Danilo Dueñas has put together some quick sketches of how the team will look in the High Alps come July.
Team management also wish to thank top designer KenL for the fantastic work that has gone into putting this gear together for the team.

Did Bikefreak edit the model of the frame? That I didn't know. Thought it was Miya's Astana one from way back.
Apologies to Bikefreak - and thanks also for the great work. Also, please come back Bikefreak and make some more frames for this year.
Thanks to JMURB was for the helmet, as I believe he made the model 2 or 3 years ago now.  |

If I'm not mistaking it's the Trek Madona nif made by Miya. Bikefreak made the basic texture for that one like the gear and handlebars. Also think Miya made that helmet for Saxo a few years ago but I'm not sure.
Bikefreak is busy with his woman database at the moment so I hope after that he will make some brilliant bikes again.
Anyway your equipment looks nice

Café de Colombia manager fenian was interviewed today on Caracol Radio, the Medellin based station. This station is no stranger to bombs in the vicinity, but there were some big ones dropped today by fenian.
"Next year, we aim to win the Tour de France. Valverde may be able to do it and we went in to negotiations hoping we could convince him to try. He was more interested in money - it is the way of the world. We have no hard feelings and wish him well wherever he goes next year. We thank him for the Vuelta a Espana win and will not forget the honour he brought the team with the World Champions jersey. We remain ambitious - the money we save goes towards a rider who can win the Tour."
So, Valverde has been let go by the team who fenian confirmed called a halt to negotiations after the second round. Also, not getting an offer in the second round was fellow Spaniard José Angel Gomez Marchante.
"He is another we wish well to. He can win stages in just about any mountain race but we believe his demands were unrealistic. Maybe he is capable of a Top 5 at the Vuelta again or even the Giro - but he proved this year that he is not one for the Tour. That is what we want and the money he wanted was more than we were prepared to pay for a super-domestique."
The manager was open and unconcerned when talking about Valverde and Gomez Marchante but his face darkened when the name of Fabio Duarte came up.
"I do not wish to talk about Fabio. Maybe he thinks because he is Colombian he can hold his country to ransom? He cannot win a Pro Tour race, yet he demands a crazy amount of money. Danny Summerhill might win one of the cobbled classics for us next year and Fabio comes in to negotiations shouting his mouth off and demanding more than Danny. It disappoints me and we have no room for riders who think only of themselves."
And that was it - three bombshells and the a glint of good news in regards Danny Summerhill who has signed on for another year with the team. Others continuing are Juan Esteban Arango, Alex Ardila Cano, Jaime Alberto Castañeda, Sébastien Joly, Christian Knees, Horacio Gallardo, Honorio Machado, Diego Alejandro Montoya, Edwin Orozco, Óscar Pereiro Sio, Vicente Reynès, William Germán RodrÃguez Parra, Miguel Angel Rubiano Chavez and Cayetano Sarmiento.
Philip Deignan, Paul Healion, Andreas Klöden, Marco Pinotti and César Vaquera are all on their way out after not being offered contracts.
"I'm pleased with who we got to continue - the Europeans we have kept offer the team something and are good value for money. I promised each of them that if someone comes in with an interesting offer for any one of them, then we will listen. So, even though they have signed they may yet not wear the Café de Colombia colours next year. We also now have the budget and resources available to go after the very best riders to fill out the roster and will be looking at those who can climb and climb and climb to glory at the Tour de France."
