Santander will continue sponsoring cycling into 2011, although disappointed with a failure to promote at the first time of asking Santanders commitment to Spanish cycling both currently and in the future means that we can expect a slower rise to the top.
It is currently undecided as to whether any riders will be let go, although we expect about 5 riders to be released to free up spots for new riders
Initial aims for the new season include
1) signing an established Spanish Star to replace Valverde
2) a wild card to the Vuelta a Espana
3) promotion to the pro tour

Santander have now assigned some more specific goals for the following season, and while we are confidant these are achievable, a hilly rider to replace Valverde will definitely be required. That said, with the confirmation of Rabobank dissolving, Valverde will be a free agent and after his strong showing last year, we will definitely talk further with him about a continued partnership.
Furthermore Santander will start profiling our riders over the next few days, summarising their results last season and talking about their future within the team. I warn you however, no one has been sacked yet and we are keeping an open mind about the roster for next season.
The goals for next season are:
Win Vuelta Castilla y Leon
Promote to the pro tour
Top 5 Vuelta a Burgos
Top 5 Urkiola Igoera
Top 10 San Sebastian Classic

Santander can confirm that only 4 riders are leaving before the 2011 season.
These are
Valverde Alejandro: Only here on loan for the season, however as Rabobank has folded he is on the lookout for a new team and we are on the lookout for a new star.
Niño Manuel: He progressed well over the year, however despite his obvious climbing potential he struggled to keep up with the peleton.
Pieras Jorge: He tried to make it into road cycling after a mainly track background. He had limited opportunities to impress, and never managed to be in contention at the end of the day. He has decided to go back to focussing on the track, and we wish him all the best in the velodrome this season
MejÃas Francisco: Another climber who struggled when the roads were flatter, he has decided that he would rather focus on U23 racing for now, we hope he comes back in a big way in the future.

Santander can confirm that to our disappointment we will not be renewing our successful partnership with Valverde for the next season. Although he was a key target before the start of the transfer season, other teams have more money on offer and Santander don't have the salary room to afford him.
However we can confirm that we are remaining active and expect to announce some signings over the next day or two.

Santander can announce our first new signing of the year. However it is not a permanent one, as we are loan swapping Justo Tenorio for David Abal.
Tenorio's first season at Santander was not overwhelming, however he enjoyed some success in the youth competitions throughout the season, as well as being a very able assistant for Angel Madrazo in the U23 WC and the Tour d'Avenier. His two main highlights for the season were a top 5 in the U23 ITT world championships and victory in the open TTT world Championships, and at just 21 he is the youngest world champ in recent memory. We have loaned him out to get experience in the pro tour and we hope that he will come back next year strong enough to challenge for GC's at the top races.
In return we get 25 year old David Abal who has proven last season that he has what it takes to impress at any level.
Top tens in Paris-Nice, Tour de Romandie and impressively the Vuelta a España, as well as a podium finish in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya show that he is a force to reckoned with in the mountains, he also showcased his ability on all terrain by winning a hilly stage in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya as well as a TT in the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco.
We hope he enjoys another excellent season this year.

Santander can confirm their first signing for the season, Juan Jose Cobo He is a very strong rider, both in the mountains and the hills. With decent strength in time trials as well we expect he to perform well on GC's. He had many highlights last season so let us pick out the top too. Both cam in the Vuelta, were not only did he secure a top ten overall, but he also showcased his sprinting ability to claim the 15th stage.
We expect him to help us to promotion this season, as well as, with Abal, helping secure invites to the Vuelta among other pro tour races.

New rider number 3 can be announced, as Aitor Galdos has joined us. A free agent following the collapse of his Molteni team last year, Aitor struggled with his limited race days finishing well down the continental standings. His highlight of last season was probably winning the bunch sprint to take 3rd in the Giro della Romagna, he may well have won the whole thing had the early break not been allowed to get away.
He joins Santander's strong sprinting line up of Ventoso, Guerao and Perez Arrieta, and we expect our sprint chain to lead out and win many a sprint this season.

Santander's final big signing is complete, and after some drama with the lawyers David López Garcia is now a Santander rider. Strong in both the mountains and the hills López Garcia showed himself best last season in the Tour de Suisse, taking 8th, and the Giro di Lombardia where he took 10th. Due to his lack of time trialing ability he will focus on those stage races without time trials, as well as being joint leader with Cobo in the hilly classics.

Santander can confirm that we have signed young talent Rafael Valls. A strong climber, we hope he can be a good assistant this year, before hopefully coming into his own over the next two years as a GC rider in his own right.

As the transfer season draws to a close Santander can confirm some action in the loan market. Firstly Angel Madrazo has gone to Festina-Seiko, then Pedro Merino Criado and Juan Carlos Rienda Segura are going to Vesuvio-Accumalux. All three have progressed a lot over the past year, however we feel that they will progress better in the Pro-Tour and as such, we wish them all success and hope they come back next year even stronger.
As for Arrivals, Jonathan Castroviejo is coming on a loan from Festina-Seiko, to gain experience in the world of professional cycling. We hope he enjoys a successful season with us.

Santander can confirm an initial schedule for the year, with all Pro Tour and HC races confirming their invite list.
The most important news to announce is that this year Santander is going to make its Grand Tour début with our first ever Vuelta a Espana invitation. When this team was first announced last year Santander declared it was on a 5 year mission to win the Vuelta a Espana. As such the plan is to get a top ten this year, moving forwards to a top 5 next year and then a podium place before sealing the win in 2014.
This is a very slow progression, reflecting our emphasis on building a team through youth and not just buying our way to the top. Also as we have riders on our team who have already achieved a top 10 result we expect this to be achievable.
To prepare for our main goal of the season we have been invited to both Vuelta al Pais Vasco and the Tour of California. Pais Vasco will be Cobo's main goal of the season, as he will probably have to miss the Vuelta a Espana due to other commitments. The Tour of California is the last pro tour race before the Vuelta and as such it will give our Vuelta team a chance to familiarise themselves with the opposition before they peak, that said with Abal in decent form for the time trials, and Cobo and the still improving Ventoso for the hilly stages we hope to pick up a couple of stages, as well as new fans from around the globe.
Although on a smaller scale, Santander are also pleased to announce that our 12 HC races are as follows:
Tour de Langkawi
Tour de San Luis
Volta al Portugal
Vuelta a Burgos
World's View Challenge
Bloemfontein Classic
Giro dell'Emilia
Japan Cup
Philadelphia International Championship
San Sebastian Classic
Urkiola Igoera
Vattenfalls Classic
A wide variety of races we hope to be able to impress both in the stage races and the one day classics, as we build towards promotion next year.
We expect our full race schedule to be announce in the coming days so stay tuned for more.

Santander confirms 3rd year of Sponsorship
With many teams searching for new sponsors we are happy to confirm Santander's continuing commitment to our team, and Spanish cycling in general. The Santander press officer issued a statement saying that the initial deal was for 5 years, and Santander had no reason to back out.
They highlighted Abal's 5th place in the Vuelta as the result of the season so far, and were equally impressed with several stage wins on the world stage by young sprinter Oscar Guerao.
Those results, combined with the 1-2 by Santander's riders in the world's premier U23 race by Tenorio and Madrazo highlighted Santander's exceptional scouting and grass routes trainign and this was something the team is clearly keen to continue. The manger reiterated this commitment to youth: Over half our team arrived at Santander without much racing experience and have improved significantly, and we expect to snap up promising youngsters again this season, with the end goal being a Santander team where every rider has come through our youth system, and excelled at every level.
Although things on the continental tour have been less emphatic team manager confirmed that Santander had always been on a three year promotion plan and that while obviously they wouldn't reject the opportunity if it came there was no rush to get into the Pro Tour.
We look forwards to many years of successful cycling, with Santander at the forefront.

Close of season report:
Let us look at our three main goals for the season, and evaluate how well we accomplished them:
1) signing an established Spanish Star to replace Valverde
Although none of our team have the big name that Valverde has, between Cobo, Lopez Garcia and Abal we feel Valverde was adequately replaced, with all three of them pulling out big results when we needed them, while also confirm our status as the cycling's premier Spanish team
2) a wild card to the Vuelta a Espana
Achieved and with aplomb, Guerao book ending the tour with stage wins, and Abal's 5th overall giving our PT opponents a taste of what is to come next season.
3) promotion to the pro tour
As alluded to already Santander have achieved promotion thanks to what can only be described as a team effort. with our leaders missing Ortega steeped up to the plate delivering a solid 4th place with a succession of epic rides. He was backed up by strong attacking riding by the rest of the team, allowing the final race of the season to be a calm one.
We will keep you posted on developments as Santander continue to move up in the world.

With rumours building about personel change with the upcoming promotion to the protour, with moves for Intxausti and Gomez Merchante being talked about, as well as a return for the now contractless Abal, Santander would like to reafirm their commitment to youth and we are confident that the riders who achieved promotion for us will be able to do the buisness as the competetion gets harder.
That said it is with sadness that we do have confirmation that the first ever rider to pull on the Santander jersey is leaving us. Juan Manuel Garate was hired at over the odds for his experience and he has been exemplary in marshalling the troops over the past 2 years.
None more so than in his last race for Santander, the Herald Sun Tour. He was first to spot the split developing on the flat stage 1, and he ensured that Santander were represented sneaking into it himself, as well as gettng Didac Ortega to join him. However this also brought home his diminishing abilities, as he was unable to keep with the top competitors, whereas in his prime a split such as this would have given him a guaranteed podium spot.
This year, knowing his limitations, he worked tirelessly for Didac, whos 4th overall sucured our promotion, and Juan Manuel still managed 11th in the final rankings, which is an excellent way for him to round out his season.
After the race he talked to us and said he felt his legs wouldn't be up to anther year of cycling, especially as the pace will be even hiher in the pro tour. Not wanting to let him go, we have offered him a job behind the wheel which he has happily accepted.
So welcome Juan Manuel Garate to the management side of the sport.
