The story of Lars Fredrikson
manindemaan
Spoiler
This is a story about a fictional young rider from Sweden I added to the database (PCM daily 2010). I'll be manager of whatever team he joins and try to treat him as appropriate as possible. I will report only of races he takes part in, and focus on overall reports of (stage) races.

January 2010

End of last year an old friend of mine called me when I was preparing another ski trip. He joined a professional cycling team a year ago and took part in some races throughout the year, most of them in Sweden and Norway. He wasn't a talkative guy and pretty soon asked me whether I would like to join his team. A teammate had unexpectedly quit his carreer and now the team was even smaller than before. They really needed someone, and my friend must have been impressed by my strength last holiday when we crossed a lot of mountains by bike.

Since I was on a break and had no big plans yet for the upcoming year I agreed and signed a proof contract for one year. I signed for a small team from Norway, SpareBanken Vest - Ridley. The team was founded six years ago and takes mostly part in European races. However, with less than 10 cyclists they are not too competitive. In 2009 their only victory was at the local Rogaland GP.

The first race our team is registered for is the Giro della Calibria, a four-stage race from 30/01 to 02/02. It'll be my first race as a pro, and there are rumours that some big names will show up there. We'll take part with the entire team.

My teammates are:
Geir Inge Berg 23.03.1979 NorwayFighter
Filip Eidshiem 16.02.1990 NorwayNéo-pro

Neo-prof Lars Fredrikson, 1st stage of Giro della Calabria

manindemaan
February 4, 2010

Today we came back from Italy, where we took part in the four-stage race Giro della Calabria. We had a really good start into the race. On the first day, when it became clear that the stage will end in a mass sprint, we tried all we could to bring Roy in a good position. Roy had luck when he decided on which sprint train to hang on: before the sprint was opened, the second train slowed down and fell behind, reducing the number of contenders. It came down to a head-to-head sprint between Roy, Kump - who was in Roy's wheel -, and Ferrari - who was led out by a team mate. Kump won, our sprinter finished a great second place.
However, the next day we encountered more hilly terrain, and big teams like Astana and Caisse d'Epargne set the pace in the peloton. When we climbed the last hill of the second stage, the longest stage of the race by the way, I noticed other riders passing me and myself falling far behind in the pack. I used the short downhill part to get back to Roy and help him a bit on the last kilometers, as it seemed to turn out in a mass sprint again, but once we were back on level terrain, I had no chance to hold on and lost more than three minutes on the leader. Luckily, Roy didn't loose time today.
But day three and four were even worse from our point of view. Gasparotto from Team Astana was overall race leader, and his team did good work to keep him in this position. Unfortunately for us they went up the hills in a speed we couldn't keep up to, at least not after the long second stage.

Lol, I quote directly from your QS story:

And in other news, Tom has done an ok job in Qatar, ending up at an 7th place, winning stage 5. Jerome has also done it well this week, ending up at 14th in Challenga Ciclista a Mallorca. He was in the break during the race, but the break was rolled in so he ended in the front of the pack. Dario has been racing Challenga Ciclista a Mallorca as well, ending up in a break to, not succesfull breaks though. We also took the 5th in the TTT in Qatar, stage won by sky, taking the leader jersey. That was the news for now, stay tuned for more

And, that was it, no screen from these races at all.

unfortunately the stage profiles were the same as the first three of the last tour..

February 15, 2010
Together with seven team mates I've been in Italy again, this time to race at the Giro della Provincia di Grosseto. Only Filip Eidsheim stayed at home.
Our manager told us that one of our sponsors is promoting the race and might want to see our team in the camera from time to time.
We had one team mate, Solberg, in the breakaway during the first two stages, and were present in the first stage's final sprint with Hegreberg. While Gardeyn (Vascansoleil) seemed unbeatable, Hegreberg had a hard fight with Siedler (Vorarlberg), but lost and finished third.
i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab360/manindemaan/02_stage1.jpg
Hegreberg finished third behind Gardeyn and Siedler

The second stage had small but steep hills not too far from the finish. The breakaway was reeled in when the final hill was reached, but the pack didn't slow down when going uphill, it just got longer and longer. I had a hard time hanging on, struggeled especially in the final seven flat kilometers. But I made it, luckily. In front was Hegreberg, but he had no chance in the sprint and finished 11th. The final stage had several hills during the final 40 kilometers. Two early attacks by Sanchez and Plaza could be neutralized, but when the favourites attacked at the final climb the pack splitted apart in several pieces, and you can guess it already, I lost time, Hegreberg lost time, we all lost time on majority of riders. The stage and tour was won by Moreno, Omega Pharma - Lotto.

February 23, 2010
We had two great days in southern France, at the Tour du Haut Var. Both stages are quite hilly, the second has almost a small mountain to waiting for us. First stage, Anders Lund made it in a breakaway of initially 12 riders, and he was honored the red climbers jersey for his efforts at the climbs. Towards the finish, when Anders' group was chased down (he could even hang on to the pack until the finish!), I tried to escape from the pack at a small climb, but they catched me soon. Only one escapy, Matthieu Halleguen, wasn't catched, and won the stage by 12 seconds before the sprinters. Hegreberg took a 4th rank in the sprint.
In the second stage Anders Lund wear his red jersey, which nicely fits with our red shorts. Early in the stage he went on a solo break, since no one wanted to follow that early, and throughout the stage he collected enough points to secure the jersey. Now he just had to return home in time.

Some minutes behind the race wasn't too exciting until we hit the longest climb of the race. One for one our team mates fell back and I found myself alone with Hegreberg. It was up to me to help our sprinter to the top of the hill, make sure he won't be dropped. He was glad to see me, by time even Anders was back in the pack and about to be dropped. It worked. We approached the top, now it was only down and flat. Flat. Too flat for me, yuo could say, as I couldn't hold up. But Hegreberg could, as I heard via the radio. He was in the first group of about 50 riders, I was behind in a group of maybe 20 riders. In front several riders attacked, but Joly was the one who got away and finished with a large margin, giving him a secure overall win. Hegreberg finished in a sprint of the main group, and with two good sprint results he finished a 9th overall.
When I crossed the finish line I waited for Anders. Tired but smiling he sat in the wheel of team mate Stevenson. Though more than 10 minutes behind he was announced as winner of the mountains classification.

End of February

Our team manager told me that I might get the leaders role when we will take part in the Giro del Trentino in Italy between 20th and 23rd of April. It felt really good news. Its first stage is a 17-kilometers time trial, followed by four mountains in three stages, two times with a long climb to the finish. I'll have a break now and will be back on the road for preparatory races in early April.

Meanwhile, the other riders of our team will race in Giro del Friuli and Cholet-Pais de Loire in March.
